Default Assassin's Creed Origins (PS4, XB1, PC)

I know most people got burned out on the series, but I was really surprised to see how few people gave this new entry into the series a shot ... I have over 120 people on my PS4 friends list and there is only one other person playing it.

I just finished the game last night after playing it obsessively for 60+ hours. I think it's my favorite game of 2017 ... and that's saying something. There's been a ton of great games this year (maybe the best year ever for gaming) and I struggle to think of a game I enjoyed as much (Horizon Zero Dawn is way up there too).

Anyone else give it a shot?

The combat is a really big change over previous versions ... I wasn't sold on it to start. It took a couple of hours before it clicked, but once it did, I was hooked. I changed the difficulty from medium to hard and it changed the way I approached encounters. You had to consider what each enemy was bringing to the fight ... and had to be aware of your surroundings because more than one will attack at a time (unlike previous AC games). With all of the upgrades and weapons you can find, even hard was too easy by the end, but the journey more than made up for it.

The main character (Bayek) is excellent. He rivals Ezio was best in the series. His dialogue and interactions all flesh out the man he is. It's well written and extremely well acted/voiced.

There is a ton to do in the game ... I finished the game doing every quest and side quest (126) and while some of them are repetitive, the stories told were usually pretty good. Yes there are a ton of bandit camp and go here and get this style of mission, but I never got bored of them. The various environments and layouts made most of them interesting. Setting up little challenges like trying stealth your way through without killing anyone or letting them see you walk through the front door and trying to take on an army allowed me to mix it up any way I wanted. There's no fail states in missions that require you to start again or replay boring sections over and over (a huge problem in previous games) ... you do things the way you want.

Anyway ... I feel like the game is being overlooked so I felt the need to tell fans of the series that you shouldn't miss out. It's well made, beautiful and a really fresh take on the series. I will never platinum the game because one of the trophies requires you to complete everything in the game ... and there is probably close to 1000 things to complete, but I did all the major tasks (including collecting the best cosmetic items and weapons). I definitely be back for the story DLC and pop in occasionally for the Trials of the Gods that happen once a week

I'm going to pick it up after I finish Shadow of War. There are a ton of new games out now.

Shadow of War was the game I played right before AC ... enjoyed it until Act 4 (Shadow Wars) ... couldn't get through the horrible grind. Loved it up until that point though. If you like Shadow of War, you'll love AC ...

Ubisoft games seem to tank in price pretty quickly, so I'm waiting this one out for that magic $20 price point in the next few months.

I played a LOT of this game over the holiday. Right now I'm only level 26 but I'm exploring the deserts of the southwestern part of the map. I came across the Qeneb too Kah'Aiye tomb down in Desheret Desert. It's the one that has the mirrors that you pull out and beam the sunlight from one to the next, going down the canyon.

My question is this: once it gets to the end in the tomb, the light shines down right on top of the Ancient Mechanism but it doesn't seem to do anything. By the time I got there, the sun had set so I was out of luck but I passed time and tried again the next day and nothing happens. I figured it might make it so you're not charged the 5 silica but nope. I honestly can't see the point of the mirrors. Am I missing something?

Also I can't say enough about how gorgeous this game is. I took a couple 4k HDR game clips of sandstorms but after uploading them to YouTube, they don't do it justice. There's banding in the video that's not there and it's compressed to hell.

I'm about level 26 too, but haven't done any of the tombs yet. I just got to Memphis.

I've noticed that some of the regions are quest related, so you may not be able to do something until that mission has started. Like, I couldn't get into the bottom of one of the pyramids until I did the Hyena mission.

The game is gorgeous. The new fighting mechanic could be better. The story is fine. The characters are good. Loading times are excellent. It's still very much an Assassins Creed game, but a little different. I like these games, but honestly it's a tired concept.

Yeah, I'm planning on this one once all the content is out and worthwhile.

Probably 6 months to a year.

In hindsight I'm wondering if the light beams might just be a guide to lead you to the ancient mechanism.

It's funny, I feel the opposite. I'm enjoying the new combat mechanics and I feel that the closest thing this has in common with older games is the climbing and the name.

It's nothing groundbreaking, but to me it feels fresh.

That tomb with the mirrors ... I remember there being a tablet with a skill point. Did you clean off the the mirrors and shoot one or two of them to move them? I can’t remember exactly, but I remember spending a few minutes in there getting everything just right

Also ... save all that silica ... you’re going to need a lot of it if you want the best looking armor

Yeah I cleared the cobwebs off of a few and pulled out the others. The light goes all the way down to the mechanism and passes right over the tablet. That's why I'm starting to think that the light is useless, just a guide to get you to the tomb.

As far as the silica goes, I have just over 30 now, so 20 more and I'll have enough for that armor. Then I'll be ok with spending some on that other frivolous stuff.

Curious for those who have played this for any length of time: how much of the game is exploration/puzzles versus straight up combat? Obviously the name implies a lot but I'm usually more into the exploring and such than the Assassination/combat mechanics. If the game is heavily weighted to that I may give it a pass.

Picked this up during the black friday sales, level ~20 so far. I am not sold on the fighting mechanics, I must not be getting it because I'm pretty sure I haven't been able to parry a single attack yet(yes I have the skill).

If I somehow end up being spotted I find myself running backwards and going for headshots with the bow pretty much 11 out of 10 encounters and I usually hate that style of fighting. I laugh every time I end up in the wrong area of the map and some high level enemy one-shots me from afar or a hippo bumps me and I instantly die.

And no, I am not trying to take a selfie, I want to lock on to an enemy.

It's took a little bit to get used to the game play. I am also about level 21 I think. It is fun and have already spent hours doing side missions and exploring.

I am using the bow for the larger animals and then alot of sneeking up behind and trying to be stealth. If you enjoyed any of the other Creeds, I would suggest this one.

Woohoo I got the armor! It looks cool but I do have to say that I'm not a fan of how armor is an "outfit" and cosmetic only.

On the One X, when you take a screenshot, you can then toggle HDR on and off. This is with the HDR off because Imgur wouldn't take the HDR image. It ended up looking really dark on my non-HDR PC monitor anyway. If you have the means, though, the HDR on this is amazing. The shadows and lighting just look real insterad of all blown out like this.

Another thing that annoys me is how Ubisoft still doesn't realize that absolutely nobody gives a **** about their stupid modern day crap in these games. Nobody. Nobody at all. Sure those scenes are brief, but they really don't need to be in the game. They don't matter. Nobody cares about Abstergo or how it's in the same world as Watch Dogs.

I wrapped it up tonight. Very long game to be honest. Id rank it as 2nd in the series behind Black Flag (if you could by that as a part of the series). Truly great visuals. Ok story. Good protagonists. A lot of BS was trimmed out. Im not sure where they will go next, but it seems like they wrapped up this era.

That's really the only part I do care about with this series (besides pirating in BF). Every year I wish for a future state entry in this series. The historical locations were neat at first, but have grown seriously long in tooth after so many years.

If it was an entire game set in the present or future, that's fine. They way they try to cram in this absolutely useless present day sidestory is just completely annoying and lame, though.

I'm telling you. It's my favorite part of each game I've played in the series. It's the only thing that makes the overarching plot of the series interesting.

Agree to disagree! I usually don't care much about the plots. This one was fine but nothing to write home about. I just want a charismatic protagonist and I big, beautiful, detailed world to explore regardless of the era or location and this game gave that to me in spades.

I beat the first DLC and meh. It wasn't bad, but I don't think it's worth the purchase.

I've been spending way too much time on this game lately, but I only started a few weeks ago. I THINK I'm close to the end of the story, but I haven't revealed even half of the map yet.

Yesterday I went down by the water and found 8 dead crocodiles just floating by. Free mats! I swam out to get them and found what killed them, big hippo attacked me. That's one bad ass hippo to take out 8 crocodiles.

I got some cool dual blades and a warhorse out of the DLC but overall it's pretty short and the story is rather bland.

The map was always my favorite part of the main game but this map just seemed uninspired. Not too much exciting or particularly breathtaking like the main map.

Finally finished up the main story. I think this was a great game.

I started with a couple of the main missions, then went and worked on the side missions, opening the map and checking off all locations, etc... While I know the hours I spent playing, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.

And yes, **** hippos!

I have been thinking about the DLC but not sure if I will purchase yet or not. I have FM7 to keep me busy for now.
