Default Minecraft v7: Yeah, it's still around...

Servers!

Otterland - Vanilla v1.12

Crawfordville - Modded v1.12 (note you'll need my Curse modpack to log in but it ain't done yet)

Microsoft made a couple major changes recently. They've implemented "cross platform" support (Switch, Win 10 Edition, Xbox, Pocket) and have shown off a crazy "Super Duper Graphics" 4K thingie:

Side note...I've been working on a new modpack centered around a mod called The Lost Cities. It's still in development but world generation is coming along nicely: https://goo.gl/zN7pFj

I haven't screwed around with the Win10 edition all that much since beta. For some reason the free key you're supposed to get if you had a Java version never worked for me. Also, are you able to run private servers with the Win10 edition or is MP only through realms? I never saw confirmation of either. Private server support is what will drive me into Win10 if I can get the license straightened out.

I haven't played around much with the Win 10 version...I have it (got it free, same as you) but it isn't like the Java edition (you can't just add mods to it).

On setting up the private server for Win 10...I think you can. I'm not 100% sure though. It's super easy to do with the Java edition.

There used to be a bunch of different "versions" of Minecraft...a specific version for Xbox, for mobile, for PS4, Win 10, etc. That all changed recently. Now there are 3 "versions"...
-Better Together: This unified the majority of them. As I understand it people can be on Pocket, Xbox, Switch or Win 10 and play in the same world.
-PS4: Sony and/or Microsoft ain't playing nice together so that version is still its own.
-Java: This is the more "old school" Windows/Apple/Linux version.

I've set up a Java version on a server at home (the goo.gl link is the live map of my server world). I'm still working on dialing in the modpack and configs and stuff but it's pretty close to release. In order to play you'd need to install the Twitch launcher (free but need a Minecraft account) and download the pack.

I'm tempted to set up a second server for "vanilla" Minecraft. I could either do Java or this new "Better Together" (aka Win 10, Xbox, etc) version.

I gotta admit that 4K stuff looks really good...well...really good for a game about 1m cubes

I used to like vanilla survival. Then it got turned into all kinds of crazy mods that make no sense to me when I log in. I come in and there's like signs that barely explain anything. I found a good vanilla server for a while but got bored. There's a new Minecraft game that's supposed to be the thing now called Creativerse. I tried it and meh. I think this game was a victim of its own success.

So I have always been against this game, never saw the point of it...in passing I said I would play with my daughter (PS4)...it's pretty fun!

Fun enough that for her birthday I'm getting her the XBOX version (w/ win10 version) so she can "play together" and get the better graphics! also now I can play on the PC while she does the XBOX.

People got really carried away with mods & modpacks. I know I lost focus for quite some time trying to put all the things into the game ('cause there were lots of really cool things!).

I've been dialing in a much more simplified modpack. It is a post-apocalypse styled world and heavily focused on terrain, atmosphere, and mobs (much lighter on technical mods). The thought behind it...there was a thriving world full of cities and industry. But there was a catastrophe. It appears a war was waged and much of the world was destroyed and global warming caused the water levels to rise. The world you play in is full of ruins of what used to exist and full of considerably more dangerous monsters. Technology exists but it is minimal...magic exists and it is augmented (but with a definite evil slant).

I've been talking with a mod developer that's created this thing called The Lost Cities. It creates randomly generated cities in the Minecraft world & you can control a lot of their features. My world has decreased cities & they are all heavily damaged...even the open land has tons of craters from explosions. I set it up as if lots of time has passed so the craters have water in them, cities are overgrown with vines and plants, water level has risen to a kind of "archipelago" styled world.

I made mobs a hell of a lot harder (and smarter). Some have the ability to breach walls and build towers. I've also added mods that create complex dungeons and mazes underground that are full of treasures...as if the mobs aren't smart enough to figure out tech but have hoarded all sorts of cool stuff.

There is only one "tech" style mod called Immersive Engineering...it's complicated but has really cool aesthetics/design (and has a guide book in-game). There are a couple "magic" style mods too (again more evil-centric).

The overall concept is to explore, survive and perhaps even thrive. It's far less complex crafting wise than some of the other packs but also pretty damn hard (with some cool lil Easter Eggs too). For example, let's say you come across a field of cows. One of those cows has a low percent chance to be a demon cow (not visibly different than the rest) that'll turn red, scream, light the ground on fire, and attack you

Lil picture of how the cities and ruined landscape look:

I hope you're right. One of the reasons I stuck with Java was I ran a small Spigot server for my nephews and myself. As we all know the Java version runs poorly, especially when you start using shaders.

Now that this graphic pack is coming out and they're about up to speed on game content for the "Better Together" version, it might be a good time to switch. Assuming BT supports private servers and not exclusively using Realms.

[anything but simple]
If this is simple, maybe it's best I never got a chance to go on your last server. All joking aside that does sound like a fun mod. I'm not a super fan of 'smarter' mobs as I play MC more for the resource challenge than the survival challenge. I find mobs in MC to be terrifying enough for the relaxing way I play.

There are a couple mods that really help with the visuals and performance:
-Optifine
-Foamfix

With these both installed + tweaked Java arguments my game runs super smooth.

What also helped was switching launchers. Feed The Beast became Curse which became Twitch. The Twitch launcher is great for game management...super easy to download modpacks or create your own. Unfortunately it also has a lot of bloat 'cause it also manages add-ons for tons of other games + Twitch integration.

I used MultiMC as my launcher now. It's even more powerful when it comes to Minecraft tweaking but does not contain all that Twitch/WoW junk. Unfortunately it does not do automatic updates like Twitch/Curse does.

On the Better Together front...turns out that ain't out yet. It's being worked on and it is expected to be out this summer sometime.

I hear ya...my modpack does sound pretty complex...but what was getting annoying to me was modpacks that had a ton of different ways to do something like process ore, or dozens of different pickaxes, or other junk that clutters up JEI/NEI and isn't all that useful. Modpacks were often "kitchen sink" style...just toss it all in.

There are ways to clean up modpacks...alter recipes, remove recipes, remove items from the search panel, etc...and I played around with that a bit too. But it was more work than I wanted to do. The pack I'm working on does hide some stuff I find repetitive or useless.

And yeah...I like combat I like having to really work towards safety instead of being able to build a simple building and be done with it.

More specifically I wanted to create a world where you are basically forced to build a home that is safe, almost required to use anti-mob items...better armor and weapons...be careful and wary.

I like having the environment be dangerous too. There is a Weather mod that adds random storms (including tornadoes and hurricanes) but unfortunately it hasn't been updated yet.

Thanks! I'm happy with the way the world generation is going. The picture below has nothing built by any players...just purely mod generated.

I've tweaked the game as much as I could to decrease any world generation lag from exploring new areas (while having mods add a ton of buildings and stuff) + on my server I pre-generate a 100 chunk (16x16 block space = 1 chunk) radius. That results in near zero lag when walking around.

I was using optifine and I was still getting ~40ish fps @1440p. Might have to try foam fix. I'm also currently using the Twitch launcher so I may try out MultiMC as I'm not a fan of the bloat as well.

And I get what you like. My usual game play is gather some outside resources before the first sunset and begin tunneling. The start of my mine will become the basis for my house, which would be somewhat compatible with this. My biggest problem is gear loss. I wouldn't care nearly as much about dying if the inventory wasn't lost.

I would at least try your pack and see what it's about. I can see the redundant equipment issue being annoying. That's what's kept me out of Mod packs the most. Too overwhelming with the options and confusion among the different mods and their different options.

Still around? All my friend's kids play it. One birthday party was Minecraft too.

Never played it myself.

If you're curious, try it. I like it because you can build a lot of solutions to whatever you deem a problem. The game gives enough structure and goals for you do to things, but its up to you to fill in if, how, and when you want to do them.

I find multiplier to be the real heart for me. I had a blast with my nephews on my server. With the right group working together and sharing the experience, it can be much more fulfilling.

I still play modded, as per the other thread when Reciprocity left us I made my own 1.10.x pack.

Vanilla is poop.

I like the idea of this new pack but I don't like combat in minecraft. What I would love is for some pack that utilizes progression like FTB Infinity Evolved expert mode and then encourages teamwork. Game doesn't really have anything that I'm aware of to enforce roles but I'm thinking the folks that like combat can farm for combat-driven items while the engineers hang back in base and take care of the tech.

hmmmmmmmmmm

Been through two generations of nephews and nieces. The first batch would play outside or run around in the house like monkeys on caffeine. The second batch had their faces glued to their tablets playing this game. Not sure which ones I preferred.

I'm on board for that. I do like some combat here and there, but I was always supporting the efforts, either building or game goals. I always took upon myself to limit the constraints of materials as much as possible.

when I play with my nephew we kind of informally divvy up duties in the manner I described. He likes to go off and progress in magic themed mods and do combat stuff and handle aesthetics. I handle all the machinery such that we're never wanting for any kind of materials (or item storage...)

I do have a Gravestones mod added...when you die a grave is created with all your stuff in it (regardless of what you died of) + you get a note with a list of that stuff and the coordinates of where the grave is (and you've got Journeymap with death markers).

I definitely like the idea of coordinated efforts! Unfortunately my pack is super tech light..Immersive Engineering is the only tech mod. Personally I wanted to get away from all sorts of processing of stuff and get more into the exploratory mindset. However I did add a handful of magic themed mods to check out.

If you are curious this is my modpack (it's still Beta): https://minecraft.curseforge.com/pro...he-lost-cities

And this is the list of mods: https://minecraft.curseforge.com/pro...s/dependencies If you are into tech then you probably won't like it

I was playing it a bit this morning and honestly I think it is too hard right now. When a Bloodmoon hits and you aren't geared up then you are absolutely screwed.

It also needs a bit more tweaking...for example Ocean Monuments spawn a lot more frequently which means Guardians and Elder Guardians abound. Neither are particularly dangerous but are quite annoying...the Guardians are quite loud as they kill all the Squid around them and the Elder Guardian hits you with a 5:00 min Mining Fatigue III from a distance

Suffice to say the modpack ain't 100% ready for prime-time but it's close.

My prior pack did have the full Thermal Dynamics suite in it and I'm tempted to toss it into this one as well. CoFH has stellar ore gen control, better than any standalone mod IMO.

personal preferences of course but Immersive Engineering is by far my least favorite tech pack!

I don't think this would be a fun pack for me,d ifferent strokes for different folks and all that. I think it might be a nice basis of something I could enjoy though. I do like the idea of exploring a ruined world.

Bingo!

Old version...

New version...

In the old version the city was too "pristine", I wanted a city that looked more jacked up.

But now that I'm looking at the new version...I realize I ought to make the dirt block a touch bigger/smaller (so there aren't those sorta jarring white lines on the edges).
