Trying to sift through this entire thread, but I am still confused about what might be happening to the Sti?

I have been waiting to buy an Sti ever since they were released in the USA, and will be finally buying one this summer. Is it possible that I might have the worst of luck by the 2011 models selling out and Subaru does not make a 2012?

That would be a sad sad day. Maybe I should push up my buying decision and get a 2011? They are already hard to find...

Even if you don't touch the dash, you find out rattle propensity and sound absorption suffer compared to vinyl covered surfaces.

Find me a GTI without soft touch dash and doors. The Lancer Ralliart and the MS3 were no better than the WRX so I think the Subaru was fairly competitive, but softening the dash and doors is a huge upgrade and really needed when compacts are going more upscale a la Focus and Cruze.
You're right, the very hard plastic dash is not as nice as soft touch, but I guess I don't see it as a big deal. Fitment and layout are more important to me and in that regard the current car is well done. Things like how the doors shut open and close with a nice solid manner are critical.

The Jetta's and (to a lesser extent) Beetle on display had much crummier dashes than previous cars. The Jetta doors were particularly cheap, no better than the current Impreza.

In reality this is all subjective and the changes between one model and another are not night and day. I hope the new car feels better, but from a couple feet away it does not look wildly better.

There will be a 2012 Sti, however it will be of the same body type as the 2011 Sti. The general consensus is that the WRX/Sti will get the 2012 Impreza redesign body for the 2013 model year

This is a hideous car, and this new 'efficiency' model Subaru is pursuing leaves enthusiasts in the dust.

Dunno, I can't see any amount of STi cladding make this thing look remotely appealing. It's a family car station wagon now. woo woo

It's the BASE MODEL. Derp.
At least wait for the WRX/STi editions before judging the entire model line enthusiasm-free.

I think you missed his point...this is by far the most aesthetically pleasing Impreza yet. Actually, maybe "least ugly" would be more accurate. It's practically a beauty queen compared to the 08-11 base model Impreza. *barfing smiley *

As for efficiency...have you seen the new fuel efficiency standards that will be implemented in the near future? Having super-efficient base models is the only way performance editions like your STI will be allowed to stay in production.

I love this. The current Subaru's get absolutely embarrassing gas mileage. 17/23 sticker on a 4 cylinder sedan? There is no reason that they can't improve these number 20-30% and keep performance similar to what we have today.

None of the comments in this thread are grounded in any kind of reality. For a while there were pictures of Godzilla, for a while it was about mirror placement, now people are complaining that the Impreza is a base model commuter car... something it has always been.

I could go back and copy and paste comments from the thread from the last Impreza redesign. Some of the commenters were suggesting that the guy who designed that car should kill his family and himself, while others suggested that the last Impreza was going to be the end of Subaru as a company because it was such an EPIC FAIL etc.

I guess since nobody suggested murder suicide for the designer(s) if this Impreza, that must be an improvement right?

Its true though, this design is going over MUCH better than the previous two. The comments about the '02 redesign were just as bad as the '08.

Not sure if anyone caught it (not about to read every single post in here), but holy easy oil change! Damn filter is right there, upside-down in the engine bay.

I'm glad Subaru is taking the current design approach to boost sales numbers by mainstreaming their cars and making **** just plain easy

It's like that already on the 2011 Foresters with the FB25 engine. Makes it much easier to change the filter with no mess. Add a Fumoto valve on the pan and you've got a 10 minute driveway oil change.

Define cheap. I think cheap cars are the 10-14k ones, this is almost hitting 20K, that's not cheap. But I don't think it looks cheap though, I think it's rather nice.

Anyway this thread is getting boring. When it was revealed officially at Subarus site all the reasonable people were here. I guess they all finished talking and went on a break. Now there's just too many negative people here complaining about everything and probably not even in the market for a new car, they just want to brag on other forums. So I guess I should follow the lead of the others and take a break from this thread as well. I'll guess my interest will come back once a price is announced.

Well, it's like the dollar menu vs. Combo meal. The combo is gonna cost you a couple of bucks more, but your still in Mickey Ds.

So, Will the navigation system in the 2012 Impreza also feature XM NavWeather?

Listen to the Q&A on Subaru's facebook page. I'm pretty sure they addressed all of the system's features. IIRC they mentioned weather & traffic, but maybe I'm not recalling correctly.
