I talked to a guy with the 2009 WRX here at work. He hit a deer in a similar spot going the same speed, only his frame stayed untouched, so there was no airbag deployment. His total for repairs was $9,500, and the dealer told him it would have been another $5,000 for airbag deployment.

He had to use aftermarket body panels as well, so I am assuming the damages will be near $15,000 based on talking with him.

He has AmFam as well, and said they inspect it very closely if the damages exceed 50% the value of the car.

Is this serious? So there is no such thing as a reputable body shop?

As far as i'm concerned after my front end damage, I am getting a new rock-chip-free hood and front bumper and the car is as good if not better then when it was new.

The whole mantra that no car that needs repairs is ever as good as the original is ridiculous.

HAD to use aftermarket panels? Why is that?

No idea. Maybe because Subaru just makes the WRX differently now and doesn't offer those panels?

Anyways, the verdict is in: Not totaled for now, but couldn't get the hood open to inspect the engine bay... So it will be under further review.

Hey man, sorry for your loss here. That really sucks. I have a new '11 and just about 6k on the odo and that would have me really bummed, but you're untouched and thats all that counts.

My wife has been fortunate enough to have nothing wrong with her through several moderate fender benders, she had very similar damage on a 3 car pile up with no airbag deployment (f'in hyundai accent POS) and they totalled it, so I would prepare myself for the loss.

Good luck.

I actually know the guy back home who will be doing the bodywork at the Suby shop - that might work in my favor. He'll push to get it done right!

Also he is going to not drill the holes for a front license plate... That works out in my favor for future tickets.

I used to live in Eastern Canada and I've seen a fair number of deer get hit.

A deer can bend your frame...but not enough to cave the door in like that.

That damage to your door is the "swing around".

All of the deer's weight is in either end of the torso above the legs (like a dumbell). You go him either right at his front legs or his hind legs. This would have spun him and his other end hit into the side of the car.

There's no way the deer survived that...may not have been killed right away...but no way he's living for long.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Deer Whistles...it's not clear if they work or not.

It is clear that they are absolutely hideous.

And as stated here: http://www.ehow.com/about_5090740_ef...-whistles.html

Seems like they are pretty pointless.

if you know the body guy, take it to their shop and have the adjuster go there. push your body guy to have it totaled

Insurance rates will not be increasing, so that's a plus.

If the car was totalled you don't need gap. You would have more than enough equity that you would get money back based on what you owe. Just you probably wouldn't get back enough to compensate for what you more than likely put down.

Sorry to hear man...Glad you're okay! I hit a deer about 2 years ago in my 08 and the damage looked very similar to yours. I was probably going about 50 mph when I hit it. Luckily there was no frame damage so my airbag didn't deploy. Total repairs came to about $6,000 (thank god for insurance). Never thought the car would look or drive the same but if you take it to a reputable shop you'll be good.

Got the final approved estimate: $11,500.

They'll be using all Subaru/OEM parts, which makes me feel a lot better.

Unfortunately, I won't have the car back for about 4 weeks

Good luck...makes my $4k in damage not seem like much.

What type of warranty do they have on the work they do?

I shouldn't assume, but I will guess... Everything mechanical and cosmetic is being replaced by a Subaru dealership/shop in Green Bay, so I would *think* my factory warranty would still be valid just like normal.

It is something I will have to ask about, but does anyone have any insight on that?

I heard today that they got all my new parts in... Probably another few weeks yet.

This wait is awful, especially now that the snow is falling!
