Default Clutch install

I didnt know where to stick this.. SO i figured this would be the best place till t gets moved.

My clutch is starting to slip pretty badly , I dont make enough money to have a shop replace it for a grand.
Is anyone here from washington mechanically literate enough or have the experience/tools to help me replace it myself?
I can buy a replacement and whatnot.

If not, Does anyone have any recommendations for shops that would do it at a fair price?

Thanks!

Jordan

Outback Auto and PIA have pretty good labor prices, I'd give both a call first.

Outback Auto is has about the best prices around. But I'm sure plenty of people will help you out if you come to them. Bainbridge is quite the drive for most.

*edit*

Outback is $450 for a clutch install. Not too bad a price.

Outback replaced my blown apart clutch for a good rate a little while ago.

I bought a flywheel and clutch separately and had them install them.
Of course, they can't warranty the parts, but I think altogether it was only like $750 for me after parts + labor.

Seriously?!

Have your own flywheel turned? Let me get this straight... you're going to pay a shop to removed your transmission, remove the flywheel, and THEN ask them to leave your car on THEIR lift while you go somewhere to have your flywheel turned? So you want them to wait the 4 to 24 hours for you to come get your flywheel from the shop (after they remove it), have it turned elsewhere and bring it back, all the while they're losing money on the lift they can't use while your car is on it?

There's a reason shops charge $50-80 to have it turned. Because it takes time. Most shops don't do machine work in house. They have to physically take it to the machine shop (while paying (usually a tech) someone their hourly rate) get it turned and pick it back up each time they do a clutch job. While most shops have extra oem flywheels ready to go to minimize downtime, that doesn't mean they don't have to then take your flywheel and get it turned so it's ready to go for the next job.

So before you blast any of the local shops for quotes and prices, really think about what you're saying.

With all that being said, all the local shops are great.

My bad I was being too picky on the Flywheel. As for PIA I dont like being charged more than is necessary. Can you explain why one shop charges almost 500 dollars more for a clutch install.

Was one shop quoting the labor cost only and the other quoting the cost of labor and ALL parts?

Depending on which software a shop uses (alldata, mitchell etc) the 'book time' on a clutch for a wrx/sti is anywhere from 4.7-6.9 hours. Usually that's not including R&R flywheel, pressing in/out the new pilot bearing, resurfacing the flywheel etc. etc.

multiply the book time by the labor rate and there you have it. Add in the cost of the clutch kit and $1,200 doesn't sound very inflated.

PIA and Outback are both very well known reputable shops.

Keep in mind, that guy supplied his own parts (clutch and flywheel).

Almost anyone can find parts online/ebay for less than you'll pay through a shop. However, most shops wont install parts you bring in at all and if they do, there's no warranty.

So subtract the $65 from the $1250, as well as a decent amount for the difference in cost of buying the parts online and the labor costs come out to being pretty close.

If your near Kirkland AWD Auto is a good alternative as well. They are a independent Subaru experts, or smart service subaru too. Both these places main focus is subaru's. Got a qoute of $550 from AWD and $675 smart service.

Glad I found this thread. Just got quoted $1900 for a clutch install at a shop near my house. The guy quoting me was babbling something about a dual mass flywheel that requires special machining so they just replace them with a new one since it's so hard to get them machined and the new ones are like $600, yadah yadah yadah. Yeah, right.... I might have been born at night, but it wasn't last night.

Why does one shop charge more than another? Because they can!

I just had mine changed at PIA and it was around 1300 after tax with parts and labor, they do a darn fine job though and I wouldn't take my baby anywhere else

yeah if some shops use the cheap exedy oem replacement from worldpac then they can do it cheaper. But ive had to swap out 3 of those clutches after we found out that they really arent oe replacements. The disc has single springs instead of dual and the pressure plate has a lot less stregth on the ears than a oem clutch.

so outback- most likey oe worldpac replacement which is like 300-500 cheaper than a real oe replacement.

pia- most likey uses actual oem parts from subaru

internet has made it very hard for local companies. Let me just remind you that you get what you pay for 95% of the time.
you want a cheap clutch ill put in a cheap clutch for you. but dont try and get me to replace it when its still chattering 6 months later cuz its a cheap clutch.

My ACT Streetlite flywheel and HDSS clutch went for $1400 (includes labor\tax) at the time so the numbers that PIA are quoting sound reasonable.

Hmm, we've always used the oem replacement parts directly from the Subaru dealership as we get them for less than the worldpac price.

Had my clutch done by Outback Auto a few months ago along with a few other things. Best price I could find around, and they've gotten great reviews from everybody. I was 100% satisfied and would take my subie back without hesitation. They were helpful and very easy to work with.

I've also had good luck with PIA. Another good group of guys. I've heard mixed reviews about roopair but have friends who swear by them. They were the highest estimate with I checked on clutch though. Outback was the only place I found that was subie specific and offered flat rate pricing.

Cheers!
