Default Oil level question w/ KB oil pan

Will oil come out of the pan where the dipstick enters if the car is filled to the proper level?

I pulled my dipstick tube (not dipstick) out of the pan and oil poured out like I was draining the pan for an oil change. Just want to know if it was overfilled or not.

Thanks.

Funny you mention this. I just put new engine mounts on my STi. I noticed what looked like oil maybe leaking a little bit where the fill tube connects to the killer b oil pan. I thought maybe there is o-ring in there that needs replaced?

But @killerbmotorsport, you are saying this is normal with your oil pan?

Default Oil level question w/ KB oil pan

There are 2 o-rings where the dip stick tube goes into the oil pan and one for the filler neck

Yes. Normal with our pan, and OEM. The 'full' level is above the dipstick tube opening. So if you pull the dipstick tube (and it has the recommended 6 quarts), oil will come out.

If you have a leak, replace the o-rings. There are two, and they are specific to that pan (-012). You can get them at any hardware store or we sell an o-ring kit also. They need to be oiled at installation. Installed dry, they can fold and/or get pinched and cause a leak.

Stupid question: the dipstick itself should still read ok though right? Meaning full/empty indicators similar to stock.

I've never had a problem reading mine even with a slight leak at the dipstick. I replaced the orings a few times but just gave up and deal with it now.

With STi dipstick and tube, yes. Although, if the tube gets bent or tweaked some during removal/install, it can be off, because of the steep angle the dipstick lays in the oil. A small issue shows as a big discrepancy on the dipstick.

If you're feeling up for it again, check the dipstick tube. I scratched one once without knowing it and it never sealed up until I replaced the tube. We've had some in the shop that wept too. One had been 'rattle can restored' with a less than ideal finish, and another was slightly bent from a rough removal. It doesn't take much.

Wait so why the sti tube only? Is the oil tube length different for 2008+ wrxs and stis? (I have an 09 wrx with the killer bee pan)

All 08+ Turbo EJs (STi or WRX included) have the correct dipstick and tube to read properly. With the GDs and other models it's more of a crap shoot, since Subaru used different parts and did not make changes at the start of a MY, further confusing fitment on the older stuff.

I'm having a leak issue also...wonder if this is a manufacturing defect with the pans. Did you try to just seal up the connection with RTV/ Fuji Bond? I may take that route next. The weird thing is my just leaks randomly, not all the time.

The holes are reamed, so there would need to be a casting void there for an issue like this. We do inspect for that, but people are people.

If you gash that ID during install/removal it can leak. If the dipstick tube gets bent or squished (I can't tell you how many times I've seen vise grip marks on them!) they can leak. If they were corroded/nasty and not cleaned before assembly, they can leak. While the above DO happen, 90% of the time, it's the second o-ring. It's a tough spot to get a decent hold on to it, and worse if you're laying on the floor... push too hard and it pops out or blisters the o-ring. If you wiggle and gently press it will go in just the same, it just takes more time and patience.

At one point we setup a bunch of pans with different pan tube taper geometry, o-ring sizes, o-ring durometers, o-ring materials, and with/without o-ring lube. There was no magic bullet, except for pushing it in slowly, worked every single time.
