Post check engine light and missing gas cap

My wife forgot to replace my gas cap when she filled up my RS; the check engine light therefore came on a couple days later. I finally got a replacement cap which I installked yesterday, but the light is still on. My question- how long till it goes out or do I need to reset my ECU? Why exactly does the light come on- does there need to be some kind of gas (vapor) pressure in the tank normally?

Thanks in advance!

You need to reset your ECU. Had this happen to me once before when I didn't tighten down the gas cap enough. Once I reset the ECU and tightened down the gas cap the Check engine light never came back.

I don't know how long it takes for the light to go out. If it bothers you, disconnect the negative lead on the battery for 20-30 minutes and reconnect.

The MIL is triggered because of pressure, yes. It thinks there is a problem with the evaporative purge canister. Since the RS doesn't have a secure fuel door this would be a good time to get a locking cap... I got mine for $5 at Wal-Mart.

Once you reset the CE light and later on it comes on again have it checked out. I've had my RS since Nov and had to replace 3 O2 sensors already.
