There's also no way around the fact that you're going to have to spend some money and buy some books. And then actually read them. Self-tuning is not quick, not easy, and not for someone who isn't willing to put several months of studying into it.

Sorry if I've missed this- did try searching with no luck.
Do we need the Openport 2.0 with full adapter set or just the cable (Specifically 08 STI?)?
I thought I read somewhere that 07 and below need an adapter but 08's and up do not.

You only need the flash block with the 02-05 WRX, as far as USDM.

Default OP2.0 + Linux??

When will OP2.0 in Linux be supported? RomRaider Linux download only supports OP1.3

I have the same question, I was reading a lot about this, but not information yet

Protocols are the same of the OP.2. Of course PO.2 have a lot of benefits .

But this cheap ones really works

I bought one to try, becuase no body talks about it

multiple threads about that
The firmware update changed the interface to the OP2.0, they're still working on an update to RomRaider to work with it. Kascade (the developer) thinks he has a working version, it's currently being tested and if all goes well it should be released in a couple of days.

When you install Ecuflash, it installs the drivers. When you first go to read or flash your ECU with Ecuflash it will also update the cable's firmware.

If you are getting that message, you didn't install the logger defs correctly. You need to go to settings -> logger definition location in RomRaider's logger to specify where the logger.xml file is on your computer (make sure you unzip what you downloaded).

The ECU is like a re-programmable processor. You can tell it to do whatever you want. The car's "tune" is essentially a ****load of fields that tell the ECU what to do. When the ECU wants to know what the target air/fuel ratio should be for a given load and RPM, it looks at a table in the ROM and gets it. When the ECU wants to know what the base and advance timing should be, it looks at a couple of tables in the ROM and gets it. When you tune a car, you're changing these fields that the ECU uses to control the car. In the above examples, you would change the target air/fuel ratio, or the base/advance timing to whatever you need to compliment your set of mods.

To reprogram the ECU you need a computer program that can talk to the ECU and a cable to transfer the data. The tactrix cable is used to communicate between your computer and the car's ECU. ECUFlash is the program that coordinates the communication. That's all you need to read from and write to the car's ECU. The data is transferred in a single file called a ROM that contains every field the ECU uses to do anything. When you want to make a change, you use a program to edit the ROM, and then use ECUFlash to write it to the car's ECU. Both RomRaider and ECUFlash can be used to edit the ROM, most people use RomRaider because it's a bit more powerful, but both programs essentially do the same thing.
