Buy a WRX.
What do you want? Outright power, low-down torque, ease of install, legallity... How much money do you have to spend? |

An EJ20 turbo swap is legal, and enough people have done it that it's well established. I guess the main factor is how much you can get an EJ20t with all the plumbing and harness for.

A USDM EJ20T from a USDM WRX is a legal swap, provided you meet ULEV emissions when you're done (you have to meet emissions for the newer of the body/motor you install into your car). That does not clear the way for legal installations of non-USDM EJ20Ts, however.

It's actually illegal to put an engine that is older than the body into a car. So the best option would be a USDM EJ20, as it will meet emissions and is newer that your car. Unfortunately, it has less power than a J-Spec WRX motor, and the J-Spec can probably be had for less money. Turbo/supercharging is probably going to give you the best of both worlds, as long as you do it right. You'll keep the low-end power of the 2.5L, and have the top-end power of the WRX.

If you put in an EJ20t you will miss the torque and displacement of the EJ25, I guarantee it. I recommend a turbo kit like Shiv's, coupled with his TEC II kit, and run something like 6 or 7 pounds of boost. If you want more boost than that (you'll already be running as fast, if not faster than a WRX, with the low end torque) you'd have to think about the tranny and internals, but that's my advice.
You could also stay NA and get cams. |

I think a super/turbo would be a better choice. It should be a bit cheaper than a 02 WRX engine swap and it'll still have the 2.5 low end.

USDM EJ20 with Tranny and rear Diff and everything inbetween IMO.
EJ25's dont like to be Turbo'ed, might find yourself spending even more to get another engine in the long run. |

You CAN transplant an older engine into a newer car (at least in Cali), you just have to meet the smog requirements of the newer of the two components.
But strangely enough, the cat isn't considered part of the engine, it is part of the chassis. So, my EFI engine swap in my Datsun 510 doesn't require a cat. Funny how that works. |

Turbocharge your current engine. There still is no replacement for displacement.

My initial thought (because I have been debating saving money and buying a RS over a WRX; budgeting reasons) would be Turbo the 2.5. But I have heard a few people mention (like above) that the 2.5 does not like the Turbo. WHY? I am looking for specifics. Will I have to replace Rods and Pistons?
Thanks Jason |

Yeah if the EJ25 is turbocharged w/too high of a boost, it's blown up Reason was what Kostamojen said, and also the cyclinder walls are too thin, as size is same as EJ20 and displacement is larger. Also, the open deck design is another reason preventing high boost setup. Tranny is another main concern, b/c the US Spec tranny just doesn't cut it for high boost turbo application. Being said all that, I am going to turbo mine soon (but at 5psi only, w/no further increase of boost).
Good luck modding! -Benson (Another MY98 Owner) |

Thank you for the input. Guess I go back to the WRX vs. Spec V debate.
Thank you Jason |
