Always good to be above the curve! I'm curious to know why Scion is much worse than Toyota?

And there goes my idea of buying a MINI someday, unless the new generation of them that will go on sale in a few months shows an incredible improvement in reliability (which is HIGHLY unlikely). |

Oh by the way, thanks for talking sense into me about the TDI. They are releasing a new engine this upcoming MY, but I don't trust their reliability.

I'm surprised Lincoln is fewer than Porsche. IIRC a year or two ago they ( jd power)rated Porsche with the fewest problems. Interesting 2014 rating
Edit: Lexus then porsche, I was thinking about individual models where 911 rated best. |

Good call. It looks like VW fixed the intercooler problem for the next-generation TDIs. But the fuel and emission system problems are likely to continue, as they will be more challenging to fix. Should be interesting.

Just got back home from two weeks in your neck of the woods. The Subaru stayed home, and my rental turned out to be a 2013 Mazda 3 that was well broken in with around 35k on the clock. Great acceleration, reasonably stingy on the gas (was telling me 40+ mpg at 70+ mph), but the handling left a lot to be desired. Compared to my Impreza, the car just didn't feel solidly planted on the road. It tended to wander, and left me less than confident with its handling at highway speed. I was not sad to see it go back to the rental folks. Noticed the same thing with several past rentals of other Mazda 3's in the last year. So I have to agree with you for once... I have no love for Mazdas.

^^Just an FYI, the Mazda3 that I'm endorsing is the 2014 model.

I'm not a big fan of the way the display is mounted on the dash. At least they got rid of that smiley face front end...

If the '14 Mazda 3 had been out at the time I bought my Impreza, I might be on a Mazda forum right now! I like my Impreza though and Im not certain a 3 would look as good with a canoe or kayak on the roof.

X2! I kinda feel the same way, looks with just car the Mazda isn't bad at all. But being used with rack and kayak, and the awd, and the planted feel of the Subaru I couldn't pull the trigger on the Mazda

I especially like the Mazda3-s with the 2.5L engine, versus the Mazda3-i with the 2.0L engine. Currently, you can't get the 6-speed manual in the S model, but I hear that combination is coming in the future. That would be just about perfect, with 18-inch wheels and a 0 to 60 time around 7.5 sec, but still providing excellent fuel economy on regular unleaded gas. |

That's cool, but I want the total package I guess. I want the awd along with the space, etc. Something more like this: http://i.pgu.me/kSU6khRg_original.jpg
Or the one I've been driving, taken back in the first snow we had: http://i.pgu.me/+2jID1uS_original.jpg I prefer a WRX, but had to get sports for fleet cars. The first pic I found online, but I think that's what I envision when I think of a Subaru. Last edited by G2Spfld; 02-17-2014 at 10:13 PM. |

Sharp looking vehicle! It would be one heck of a touring car with 40 mpg highway. Most of the time FWD is sufficient for Ohio winters. This year I have been grateful for the AWD, though.

I like what I'm reading about the 2015 WRX's driving dynamics, but I would only consider one if Subaru provides it in a hatchback format (which I expect them to do in a year or two). But I'm afraid that I would find the WRX's refinement to come up short, too. We've all seen the interior pics of the WRX, and it's largely the same as our Imprezas, except for things like the multi-function display, which looks very cool. But I suspect the WRX's fit, finish, and material quality will fall short of the TDI in much the same way it falls short in my current Impreza. If you buy a WRX, you're paying for the drivetrain. Subaru doesn't invest as heavily in its interiors as VW does, and it shows. When I saw that even the seat heater switches are in the same stupid location on the WRX as they are on our Imprezas, I knew that the interior hadn't been improved much when it comes to refinement. I would expect the WRX to have the same squeak and rattle challenges that we all complain about on our Imprezas today. I haven't driven a Mazda3s yet, but from what I'm reading, it looks like Mazda put a VW-level attention to detail into that car's interior (which auto journalists have described as being very "Audi-like"). So I suspect that I'd like the Mazda3's interior better than the WRX's. If I get the Mazda3s instead of the Mazda3i (which I would), I will get the larger, more powerful engine, which will give me the power I miss from my TDI. I expect Mazda to build a more reliable car than VW can, so that's covered. The only thing the Mazda3s doesn't provide is the AWD, but I was happy with the TDI's winter performance when shod with snow tires, so I'm sure I'd be content with the Mazda3 too with a set of dedicated snows. Currently you can't get a Mazda3s with a stick (they only put the manual tranny in the Mazda3i), but I hear Mazda will be fixing that shortcoming soon. So if I had to buy a new car in one or two years, I'm hoping that by that time Subaru will have introduced a hatchback version of the WRX, and that Mazda will have put a stick in the Mazda3s. And if both of those things happen, then I will cross-shop both of those cars before making a final decision. |

Has anything become of Subaru authorizing dealer oil changes with heaviee oil?
It was mentioned a few pages ago in the actual oil burning discussion. Someone said the dealers may have been given the green light to use 5w oil in cars that consume some but not enough for replacing anything. |

I just re-read a review of the WRX. The multi-function display, sporty flat-bottomed steering wheel and metal foot pedals all look very cool, but it would take a lot more than that to make it a refined interior. That's just eye candy coolness. But it's still certainly not as well assembled or designed as the TDI's interior.
They also discuss how rock-hard the ride is on the new WRX. This would be great fun on a twisty back road, but not so much on a road trip. And I'm sure the WRX's turbo would add some reliability concerns (and premium gas prices) to the mix. I suspect the Mazda3s would win that comparison, but I would certainly test drive both cars. I LOVE my Subaru dealership, so that's one advantage of sticking with Subaru. |
