Default Broken ringlands/shortblock options

I've been getting intermittent smoke on start up recently, and took the oil cap off while the engine is running to see what was up. I don't see any smoke, and a little bit of oil shoots out (droplets), but I don't really know how much air is supposed to come out. Its enough to feel obviously, and if i rest the oil cap on there, it bounces around.

Am I completely boned? This car is all stock except for a cobb AP stg 1 tune.

This is on a 2014 WRX.

EDIT: Lets ignore this part. ITT: engine options.

There will always be some pulses of air, but if you cover it completely, there shouldn't be enough pressure to push air around your hand so much that it farts through. I never believe in that test anyway. Check your intercooler for oil, and check the pcv and valve cover breather lines to see if they are clogged. If you are still getting smoke with a clean intercooler, and clean breather lines, then something is boned.

Consult your dealer, yes even with Stage 1. There is no specific measurement. If you see smoke, that's bad. Oil/air will come out of the fill tube.

May check the intercooler for oil later.

Wouldn't be the first time someone mistook condensation fer smoke here.

Just compared to my roommates cars. They all blow droplets of oil out, and there are steady pulses of air coming out. These other cars have healthy engines.

So basically this test has told me nothing.

Droplets of oil through the filler cap isn't a surprise given the movement of air and residual oil in the filler body.

With respect to the oil on start-up, have you verified that the motor isn't overfilled with oil? That has caused many a cause of smoke on start-up.

Default Possible busted ringland, what are my options?

So I'm not 100% sure that I broke a ringland but I am eventually taking my '14 WRX to the dealer(whole other thread on this, not important for the purposes of this thread). I had a Cobb stg 1 tune on it, and noticed a problem, so reverted it back to stock tune and unmarried the AP. Driving on the stock tune currently.

So lets just pretend that my ringland is broken for sure and lets also pretend that the dealer won't cover it under warranty.

What is my best option for pistons that aren't made of glass, and not spending a ridiculous amount of money?

Here are my thoughts:

1. Buy a factory shortblock, throw it in myself with no modifications(yes, im very capable of doing this, thanks)

2. Buy a factory shortblock, throw in better pistons, put in car.

3. Buy a built shortblock from someone else like crawford performance or some other reputable place.

4. ??? Some other option that I haven't thought of yet.

This car is not going to be tuned or modified extensively, I don't have the motivation to do that anymore. The most it will see is open downpipe and stage 2 as far as power mods go.

What do you guys suggest? And if you were to pick the 3rd option, who would you get a shortblock from?

tl;dr if you blew up your engine what would you do?

Stock block replacement. Since you wont be modding it past downpipe and tune

Is the smoke blue? Is your car going through a lot of oil? It just seems highly unlikely that you could have already blown a ringland on a 2014 with a simple stage 1 tune.

Don't speculate until you know if it's covered, cuz you could be worrying fer nothing.

Eh, would rather know what I'm getting into financially. I'm more worried about the vast amount of choices as far as pistons/built shortblocks go.

Somerset subaru on this site for a new block you have to mention the forums for a discount, also they and other people do ebay sales, very cheaply.

tl;dr merged your 2 threads on the same subject, because you don't need 2.

So why do you think you broke a ringland? The only thing you've mentioned is puffing air, which is completely normal. Did I mention you will 95% of the time have smoke out of the filler if you've got a broken ringland. You are unlikely the 5% exception.

Could you be having a turbo problem ?

My current shortblock is burning through a quart of 15w40 every 1000-1200 miles its been doing this for 10,000 miles now, synthetic is even more water as low as 800 miles.

Last few weeks started to drive a bit rougher i do mean recently as this year leakdown was #1 130, #2 135, #3 135, #4 145.
Plugs are normal for 40k
No smoke from the filler cap
No exhaust smoke
No leaks
No oil in Inlet or TMIC
CF AOS has some yellow stuff in the hoses that hasnt had time to burn.

Is this the first winter you've had it? Sometimes if it takes longer than usual to start (really cold with thick oil), there's enough unburnt fuel to make the exhaust smell awful. If you don't feel like building it yourself there's a bunch of vendors on here. My daily has uprated rods, bearings and 4032 pistons. It's quiet (normal subaru engine noise) and reliable. I have a lot more power mods than what you are planning on.

Have you checked the cold temp oil level to confirm you're not overfilled?

Have you stood behind the car when it's started to verify it is in fact oil smoke?

What color is the smoke?
How long does it smoke for?
More so when it is colder?
Are you SURE there is no smoke from the filler cap?
Did you put the correct amount of oil in it?

Whoa. Lets start over.
lets PRETEND i have a busted ringland. my question is, what is your course of action once you know?

I have not diagnosed much yet, I'm just looking at my options. I will find out for sure within the coming weeks.

And yes I am 110% sure that it is not overfilled. Unless my car filled itself with oil in the past 3 weeks.

Wasn't able to get out of the car fast enough to catch what color it was before the smoke dissipated.

Was going to check this morning BUT...no smoke at all. Maybe tomorrow.

From what I've read, it doesn't seem too unlikely. Obviously, I'm hoping you're right. Just picked up some fat tires for this car too.
