Infrared Testing Volume 5 **featuring Process West/now enhanced with PTP Lava Wrap**
In this installment we will be taking a look at the Process West top mount intercooler for the 08+ WRX. I will be taking a look at the stock TMIC first, then the Process West TMIC under the same conditions. Now this will not be a true performance indicator, but it is just taking a look at the heat soak characteristics of the product, which in turn will have some impact on performance.
2011 WRX Stage 2 TP tuned COBB catted downpipe wrapped with DEI titanium thermal wrap SPT cat back exhaust GRIMMSPEED turbo heat shield with DEI gold foil on underside PTP Lava turbo blanket Process West TMIC kit FORGE recirc BPV The WRX will be subjected to extended idle times of 20 min after operating temperature has be reached. The hood will remain closed until the infrared camera will be in use. The outside temperature is 38F. The temperature is very low and should be noted that his will not be typical results that you will encounter during any other time of year. Another important factor to remember is that these are results with thermal products in use so these results are almost a best case scenario with the outside temperature and the thermal products at work under the hood. The OEM TMIC hot side also has DEI's gold foil on it. Now after looking at the Process West TMIC installed, the unit is a far superior product compared to the stock TMIC. The core itself should resist heatsoak better than the OEM TMIC. The plastic end tanks of the OEM TMIC are made of some kind of plastic resin that is black in color, which is a poor performing color under the hood. Now initial concerns of the Process West TMIC kit is the black silicon hoses used on the ends of the TMIC. The placement also on the hot side locates the hose directly over the turbo, which would directly impact temperature performance. First lets take a look at the OEM TMIC through the eyes of the infrared camera. This next image gives you an idea of how much heat is radiating from directly below the TMIC Now on to the Process West TMIC images.

Overall the Process West TMIC resists heat soak better than the OEM version. Some areas of both of the top mounts reach the same temperatures (cold side) while the hot side areas of the Process West TMIC stay much cooler while exposed to the same temperatures. There is some room for improvement using some of the thermal control products that we have seen before to help aid in keeping the temperatures as low as we can.

I had some PTP lava wrap around so I decided to put it to some good use. I wrapped the silicon hoses of the PW TMIC to see if it would have a positive affect with temps.
I didnt get too involved with testing, just took a quick image and found it knocks down around 15F on average. So its nothing huge, but every little bit counts. |

Hero, I would suggest gold wrapping your IC and hose if you're anal like me; not exhaust wrap. We are trying to reflect and not absorb / trap heat. Keep in mind the PW splitter for your hood directs air both onto the IC as well as the left and right corners which direct air over the hose as well as onto the turbo/DP. Here's mine.

The reflect-a-gold is a far better choice for the application and would do pretty well. The hotside of the tmic is exposed to high temps from all around. Sometime I will get some more of that product.

Kinda curious to see how the heat reflective tape works on the IC to turbo hose and around the TMIC itself. I also have the PW unit (wrapping it in a week or so) and I'd love to see how much it helps.

I had this exact setup for a while. Just to let you know, the SPT "heat shield" is not much of one really. It is more for looks. It may do a little, but don't expect much difference. But I also account some of that to the stock ones excellent coverage of the turbo. If you are that devoted to anti heatsoak I recommend a ceramic coat on the outside of the stock shield.

I've been running this tmic kit for about 2k miles with no issued yet. I've upgraded to t bolt clamps as the worm gear clamps gave me some problems. I'm glad you like the pics. Give the other infrared threads a peek to. Its not the time of year that most people think about this stuff.
