Default Think I blew motor...need some advice/help ASAP

Ok so heres the story of my lovely day. I live in Seneca SC, and drove 500 mi to VA for the weekend to visit my friends. In VA my car went into limp mode. Started making clicking sounds...to make a long story short it died sounds like a bag of marbles in the motor and currently is at the Subaru dealership in Manassas VA. They aren't gonna look at it till Mon morning but if I was a betting man I think my motor is blow. I need some advice about what to do assuming the motor is blown.

1) Anyone familiar with the area. How is the dealership in Manassas? I was thinking about taking the car somewhere else to have the work done. Anyone familiar with the area?

2) Whats the best bet if I need a new motor. The guys at the dealershipt were talking 5K-6K for a motor plus 16 hours labor at $93/hr thats frigging ridiculous.

3) The guys at the dealership were convinced my EM had something to do with my problems. I had my car ECUTEK tuned by Doug at Topspeed. Basically its got a complete TBE and a lightweight pulley and IC hoses but otherwise is stock. I told them to give me a reliable tune. Whats the chances that my tune was the problem? I thought Topspeed was supposedly one of the best?

Sorry for the rant but I'm pretty wound up right now. Anyone that has anyh advice or suggestions I would appreciate it b/c I'm assuming a need a new motor and unfortunately I'm 500 miles from home so I can't do the work myself. Thanks

We don't hear much about the Manassas dealership around here. I assume they are just like any other dealership with no real relationship with the community. They will give you dealership prices like the one you have posted above, which is absurd.

There are a LOT of good shops in this area. AndrewTech in Gaithersburg, MD is probably the best for a new motor, but they are busy. They could probably have you out the door with a 2.5L hybrid for the cost of what Manassas quoted you.

Take it to Andrewtech (www.gearboxtech.com). They are in maryland, but I would say they are worth the tow costs. From there, flash a stock tune on your ECU so you can get home.

Thanks for the advice. I really don't want to have the work done at a dealership if I can help it. I'll try and call them tomorrow if it's open.

You have an 02 which is prone to spun rod bearings. Any tune beyond stock will make the engine less reliable so, what they're saying COULD be true. I don't think there's any way they can tell though. They're just guessing. You ask why it failed and they turn it back on you. That's normal.

If you spun a bearing, you need a shortblock at least.

Do you owe any money on the car? If not, maybe it's time for another car... It's only worth 11-12K tops so, I'd seriously consider getting rid of it. They're talking 7-7.5K to fix it so, it might not be worth fixing.

well just to give you some kinda feedback. my tuner down here in socal charges $90/hr for his services so i think to have the dealership fix it for $93/hour is pretty decent. as far as the motor goes that is about the right price to replace it. you might want to find out exactly what is wrong with the motor though before they do anything to it because i might just be the shortblock that needs to be replaced unless you blew a whole in your case (which i doubt) but it just might be cheaper to replace the shortblock and if your going to replace the shortblock you might as well put an STi shortblock in your car. My tuner told me that its only $1700 to buy a new STi shortblock from a dealer. so you might want to consider this as one of your options.
btw i know this because i had to replace the shortblock in my motor because my engine took a dump on me as well.

Yeah you're in built block territory for those prices. Might as well have Andrew pull it and do it right!

Garbage!!! Hey I normally won't slam on anyone but their service dept. is beyond dependable. Everyone else on here is right, get it over to Andrewtech if you are going to fix it.

Not open....but I can let Andrew know that you're in a pickle. I'm sure he could call you.

PM me if you're interested. I'm sorry to hear about your car.

A 2.5 Hybrid swap can be done for much less than that. Even with the price of the EJ257 going up in July, the swap can be done for under $4,000 parts and labor. We have done a bunch. You can hit up lukasandrew for a referral. We completed his almost a year ago and it dynoed at 311wtq/296whp if I recall. The last two we did were similar numbers. If you are interested in a quote, or need assistance in getting your car to a shop you can trust, let us know. We would be happy to do a hybrid swap for you. And for the record, you can trust Andrewtech as well. They have always taken care of us on our trans rebuilds. Feel free to call us tomorrow. We are open 10am-6pm and 9am-8pm M-F as well.

JJ

Sweet!! This thread looks like a Lending Tree commercial.

"When bussinesses compete, You win."

From the reputation that both of these businnesses have built I am sure either one will take good care of you and your car.

you could give vip a shot. they're only about 25 mins from manassas.

www.vipgarageonline.com

at least having to break in your new motor will keep you under the radar on the drive back. if you were ever thinking about getting gears, now wouldn't be a bad time
