Default 2012 Impreza Sport - Odd Sound

I'm the original owner of my 2012 Impreza Sport (CVT), which currently has 86k on the odo.

I've noticed a sound getting progressively worse. It's a whirring or droning sound coming from the rear of the vehicle (I think it's the passenger side but I can't be sure). It starts to get noticeable at about 35 mph, is very loud from about 50-60 mph, and gets a little bit softer at speeds higher than that, but it's still there.

It does not change with pedal pressure. Coasting or not, it's still there.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

Possible wheel bearing. Does the sound increase in relation to speed or just get louder? Is it a rotational sound?

My other guess would be an axle or diff. But start at the hub/bearing. Maybe check your tires too. Move the tires around on the vehicle and see if the sound is coming from the same area.

It only gets louder with speed. There isn't a rhythm to it, if that makes sense. It's a constant sound that varies only in volume.

Most likely a wheel bearing.

Do a bit of swerving back and forth at speed and see if the noise changes in pitch or intensity. If it does, it's a wheel bearing. If it doesn't, it's tire or differential noise most likely.

+1 for wheel bearing. When I worked at Subaru, any time a car came in with a whirring noise from any corner that was the first thing they checked. Nine times out of ten it was always the wheel bearing was shot.

If I remember correctly, the rear bearings on the '12s weren't hard to remove. But if you have a lot of rust back there, be ready to bring out the air hammer/slide hammer

So it was indeed the wheel bearing (passenger rear).

$604 later, I'm good to go. Ugh.
