Subaru Stars 2000 2.2l < 2.5 rs

Hello folks I am new here. I just baught a 2000 subaru 2.2L for $5,000. And the reason I got it for $5,000 is because the crankshaft bearing is going out. It's going to cost a pretty penny if I do that so I am figuring to just buy a 2.5rs engine and let the 2.2L either be sold to someone who will fix it. Or something I dunno. As of right now I am looking for the best possible way to go about getting a 2.5 rs engine. And anything special I need to know. I read thought most of the fax and basically I got out of it I can pretty much swap this for that pretty easy besides what I would need to do if I were to change it back to a 2.2L engine.

I am also wondering of other options. Is new or used best. How much is new going to run me? What are the warranties? Used dosen't have warranties I don't belive but run about $1,500 average. It's 5 speed new flywheel and clutch as well as transmition. I am planning to get it so I can so some rallying in it. But we will see how much this will cost me first heh.

If any of you can help me spot out a well worth buying 2.5 rs engine that would be much appreciated. Thanks.

P.S. I noticed the decals on the side the subaru rally decals and I asked him about them. He said they came on the car new. And was saying that his is the 2.2l rally edition??? I dunno how true this is but I have seen pictures of other 2.2ls, and they don't come with the scoop hood, or the fin on the back. I searched for a 2.2L rally edition but came up empty handed. These decals look pretty official and yellow hehe. I will take pictures later on if you guys need them. Thanks again.

You are best off getting another 2.2L engine and replacing what you already have in the car. You will not be gaining much performance for the amount of work that you'll have to put into doing the swap you are talking about doing and more than likely you'll also have to do some revisions to the wiring harness too. I'm not 100% sure on that though.

As far as the "Rally Edition" it sounds like this guy you are talking about put those on his car himself. It's quite easy to go to your local sign shop and get such decals cut.

If you are looking to Performance Rallies you are going to need a lot more than new engine in the car. You'll need a cage, seats, com gear, suspension, safety gear for yourself and codriver. You will also need to get a race license. The bottom line is you are going to be spending a ton of money to build a racecar when you are better off buying a car that has already been raced.

I'm not talking about actually rally racing atm. I just want it to beable to fly through the mountains...... I like to race and all, but an actual rally car is out of my money range. A couple of people I have talked to about subaru swapping said that a 2.2l to a 2.5rs swap is quite easy and quite the same for the year.

Can anyone else put their input on this? The read me FAQ even makes it seems easily possible. Plus I am looking for witch is better, a new or used engine. They both have their ups and downs price, warranty, etc. But what I am really looking for is just the best way to go, with out having to have money come out of my ass.

Also the guy I got it from said that the decals came from subaru like that. He said I could probly take them off but the color of the paint would be slightly differant so I'm not going to do that.

The car did not come from Subaru with any rally stickers. A few dealers were putting rally-style decal kits on 2.5RS's(98-01 models), but that was a dealer thing...not from Subaru.

If you have a hood scoop on your car, and it's a regular Impreza sedan, coupe or wagon, then someone else added that hood. The only cars that had hood scoops in 2000 were 2.5RS sedans or coupes and Impreza Outback Sport wagons. As for the "fin"...there's a short spoiler that's an option on some Impreza sedans and coupes. It's very similar(but not exactly the same) to the rear spoiler on the 2.5RS sedan. There's a taller spoiler on the 2.5RS coupe. The Impreza wagon and Outback Sport wagon both have an optional roof spoiler and waist spoiler.

Oh, and for the engine, obviously, a new block would be "better". You'll need to evaluate the available funds for your project. Used would be much cheaper. But you'll need to figure out if you feel comfortable with the potential problems of a used block. Most people who'd venture into actually doing a swap themselves would be perfectly comfortable buying a used block.

I thought the crankshaft bearing was about an $800 fix. My friend had the same bearing on his my98 L replaced for that much.

RS engine swaps are suppose to be easy, but along the same lines, why don't you swap in a WRX engine and get some real power for the car?

Swapping in a MY00-MY01 motor is not a big problem. MY99 and under runs MAF, your MY00 runs MAP so any MY00 or MY01 is a fine swap if you do it.

....just remember that there ARE WRX engines out there with full harness and ECU waiting to be dropped into your engine bay as well. I can do it to my Wagon for $3000 shipped but I just choose not to.....

Well let's say I wanted to do the WRX swap.. Where would I get that, and how much would that be around with the wiring harness? Cause I can spend nothing over $2,000.

But I would really love to do the WRX swap. Now, is the wrx motor anything ej20t? Cause I know where there is a ej20t for $650 with no harness... The guy said "the $650 is for a Legacy Turbo engine, early 90's, water cooled intercooler." So I don't know. Then he said this.. "We have a 97 WRK turbo for $1750, and it will drop right in, but you need the harness and ECU which we do not have." So this guy confuses me.

Is there any other place I can get a WRX engine in good condition possibly low mileage for under 2 grand? I'm not sure what to do really. Alot of people around where I live are telling alot of what to do. And it seems like most of the people in these forums, know what they are talking about more then anyone else.

I just got this 2000 2.2L and want to make her purr... I am pretty new to cars to and don't want to get a lame deal. Thanks guys.
