Default The Horror Of IT. IT specific Joy, Gripe, Indifference Thread

Joy, Gripe, Indifference #1

I die inside a little everyday. Nothing last forever, not even cold November rain. December happens, it's still cold rain but it's December.

I'm new'ish to a group that's been around for nearly or at least 20 years. Things are almost unchanged with them at their core and that's great. I worked on a task with them ~15 years ago and they were highspeed, knew what they needed to know and got **** done. Still the same now. They're going through a familiar, to me, phase.

"If there's enough of you in a room we can do anything. If Sam is out, we can't do a GD thing. We need to document all the things and get back to having a base level of 'this is what we all do'".

'g fukking damn it. they're serious' -me

It has to be easy! Yes

Everyone has to be on board! sure

We all will do it! absolutely

"Until that one time someone doesn't and we're all here again" -me

THAT WONT HAPPEN!

"Of course, this time it's different."

What do you mean, this time?

"Are we including $GROUP into these talks so they're on the same page?" -me not seeing group and asking/saying a few things at the same time.

"No" -them

The other group has admin rights to do things and sometimes things just need to be done like happens with the group I'm with. No way things will diverge. No reason to get a baseline to say 'this is what we are responsible for if you want something not this it's up to you to track'. I just noticed they didn't use the word 'baseline'. I should use it to get that idea in their heads so we can have something to quickly move away from by the second day of anything we do.

I took notes, this time it's personal. At least we're down to roughly 5 independent programs to do everything with and only one of them so far is incorrectly documented starting from Step 1. This time it's going to work.

IT life cycle, real life not nice charts found online/taught in school.

"We've done it!" You haven't. "...damn, yeah"

"WE'VE DONE IT" close enough

"No one remembers what's going on or how anyone did anything" yes, that's all very true

"WE FIGURED IT OUT" nope "...fuhhhh, yeah."

"we redid what we couldn't figure out" close enough, baseline up in hur.

:deployment 1: aww, yiss

:deployment 2: aww, yiss

"the hell is this?" -person not involved with *both* deployments. Diversion from baseline has happened.

Repeat but add documentation

repeat bud add documentation anyone off the street can read and do the same thing

find new people after that mandate as almost everyone is now not working at this site/project

repeat with new tool(s)

repeat; back to basics ( collection of notepad notes, we work in a 100% linux evn! oh... 99.9%, notepad runs on windows)

repeat or kick that **** under the raised floor

support side

can we just start supporting something else?

"no"

what about now

:checks: "sorry"

"Here, no one is using this but we want to keep it running. But no one cares about it and it's not funded."

the project manager walking out the door

"that doesn't seem right. at all" -everyone at the server orphanage

Get in one day and things seem off. Best just get some coffee and settle in. Get back with coffee there's a guy you see

Huh, seems something is wrong. Oh, a server died. One of the ones no one cares about and we can just let die and now phones are ringing, the lead says "don't answer the phone" as he leaves angry. He doesn't get angry... he's angry. Buckle in.

Ah well that guy got things running again but still doesn't know what the hell the server/system does but someone is happy. Good enough.

Me finding I'm now responsible for this system.

A lot of people cared about it. I was as surprised as anyone

I did get to kill it. It was surprisingly satisfying.

I have a buddy I tell the thing I worry most about with him is I wont know when it's time to put him down since I likely wont notice mental decline in him. I'm starting to worry about that with me.

Maybe only take 2 instead of 5 pills with your booze before typing this stuff up?

And here I thought this sort of incoherence only happened in PP threads. I haven't been able to decipher any part of this that relates to IT so far.

Is this an encryption puzzle?

Not very many horror stories in my current role or employer. If anything, our "clients" may have a little more freedom to provision resources than we'd probably like them to have. But, i've done my part and voiced my concern which has resulted in light discussion however, no actual change.

Oh well.

I'm a weirdo in that I love my job. Salaried, varied workload, a good mix of hands on, project management, and software support. I feel important enough in regards to day-to-day stuff, but not so much that I am stressed out about the work.

I will say, I feel I am in a good IT department, but there is a struggle to stay informed because teams will implement or acquire new software/workflows and only let a few know, and you end up stuck with new devices and software you didn't know existed. The other bad thing is some managers/teams have an air of arrogance, in which if you reach out to them for help, they can be abrasive or condescending in their reply, or even sometimes outright ignore it. That pisses me off more than anything else, and has caused me to respectfully bitch at people for wasting my time, their time, and the end users time.

If I don't drink or take pills should I start now? Or is there just no hope.

My main gripe is that the people I work with have been around too long to think any of this is new but they seem to really think this is all new stuff. I'm not super experienced and many times wonder "??? really ???" when someone was impressed with anything I've done or said at work. I've been directly told by my #2 go to that he would not have hired me. Well, I sort of wish I knew that before he was hired but at least he's my #2 still. I feel useful but sometimes why I feel useful is what is most scary. They didn't think about X and/or Y. At least I'll get to go through the same emotions when everything works great and then it all goes quickly to ****. One thing was "we can't do any of this other stuff at all without doing this thing you haven't yet thought about. Not policy, not because someone says to do it this other way but because it just cannot at all be done."

"...****" -them

"holy ****" -me

but... yay we're doing new things and someone said python. And the people are great to work with.

I think I get what you are saying. My troubleshooting skills around here are legendary. That is because I have the ability to sit back and completely analyze a situation from the inside out and all around it in my head. A lot of people just don't have that ability. People think I'm godlike in that capacity, but being over analytical on other things can be a detriment as well. It's tough to try to learn where to give half a f*** or where to give a full f*** sometimes.

My place is a raging dumpster fire. The IT director was fired last November because he apparently tried to start a fight with the CFO. He would literally purchase software and services based on how hot the sales woman was.
He had this brilliant idea that we'd replace our whole ERP system with this cheap piece of **** software that was only intended to run our Shanghai joint venture. 10 products 4 users. You get the idea. We already had a license for it though so it's like it was free! Now we just needed to make it run the whole company! We spend months migrating data into it, writing loaders and stuff to synchronize it with other systems. At no point does the test instance stabilize, but he decides that hell or high water we're deploying it in our Tennessee facility. I could literally (and still can) crash the entire system by just loading data into it too fast. Lock file fills up and the whole thing takes a dirt nap.
We all have to go down there to install it and get things running despite NEVER having gotten the whole thing working in test. He simply insists it'll be fine in production. So we have our first meeting down there to start the migration and I ask "so what's the fall back strategy" and he responds "there isn't one". It's a **** show from the word go of course. It ends up taking months to sort of get it working. During this time, there are constant outages and the lines are up and down CONSTANTLY. He blames it on us.
He also basically kept all the EDI stuff to himself and was always working nights and weekends to keep things running. When he left it was dumped into my lap as I'm the only software developer left. Oh. My. God. He didn't just have questionable judgment, no, he was also dumb as a box of rocks. All the EDI code looks like it was written by an infinite number of monkeys. There's no process control, there's no data checking, no sanitization. He couldn't even be bothered or had no idea that there's a function called Trim() so the data is all dirty as hell. He couldn't even be bothered to give fields in staging tables meaningful names. Temp1? Temp2? WTF does that even mean. In short, this man somehow managed to stay at this company for 30 years ****ing everything he touched up and then throwing other people under the bus. I can't even.

Legendary I am not. Tedious ****, that's all me. "This isn't working, take a look." Give me all of the email, "It's a computer problem". Give me all of the email or it will be a yore face problem. I said that in my head.

"There's in R missing. No... in the windows version everyone is talking about but no one understands that's the problem with our licenses not working"

"It's an l here not an I. Use find to find typos." I shoot my load at work and just don't have the energy here.

My favorite lessons learned I thought I had in the IT question thread but can't find it but it's likely there waiting to be ironic: RAID

"With our RAID setup we can pull a drive, replace it and be okay. The server wont die?" - lead calling from the server room, he did as much work as you'd let him

"Yes" - me likely not done with my first coffee

we used 1 and 5 for RAID

:sometime later:

Everything is dying in a very orderly way. Everyone is panicking, i am too. But it's all so orderly like the power is failing or someone is just in our system hacking all of the things and really pissing in our cereal right now. I start to think about the day to that point and get to my detailed phone conversation with the lead. "shiiiii...." running full-speed to the server room. Two floors down? Jump Jump down the stairwells. -lead

"You're right but the thing I didn't mention was letting the server add the drive back to the RAID."

-lead

"yore killing everything"

" oh god!!!" -lead

I think we all still got home at the normal times since we had our kickstart game tight.
