Default Do you have a problem with buying pirated/bootlegged DVDs?

I personally don't [flame suit]. I just got off the phone with a friend and she told me how she got a wicked deal for the LOTR collection for $130. I told her I picked up the same thing (bootlegged, but the same) for $30. After that I got "henpecked" (refer to blah blah thread) and she layed the PCE on me for the next 10mins.

yeah definitely not something to really tell people. as for your friend getting a $130.00 LOTR collection, I thought the the extended version set was around $77 on amazon last i checked. seems she got ripped a new one...unless she got some uber-nerd version with the 'one' ring and locks of galadriels public hairs.

The movie making industry is very cutthroat, and difficult to get into. Just working in a student film, it takes HOURS to make single minutes of finished footage. In production I alone have spent 20 hours to make a 5 minute segment. By Hollywood standards, this is a superior ratio.

The people in the industry work hard and have their dreams broken on a daily basis. Please show them respect, and support them. I understand where you are coming from, with wanting a cheaper version, and I am not judging you. I just want to tell you the other side of the story.

Except "OmahaSTI". He can suck my nuts.

Bootleg video quality (4.7GB) != original DVD (9GB)

of course unless you have dual layer burners. But at the cost of $10+ per dual layer disks, I rather have the originals.

I meant actual DVDs copied with bonus and all. And it's CDN$, so we're talking about the $77 one.

Honestly, if I had the money to go out and buy all the DVDs I watch, I would. But when I get the same DVD for the price of renting from Blockbuster (plus their crazy overdue charges), why not. Blockbuster already makes a **** load of money and I'd rather give the money to the little guys (hustling or not)

I have a dual layer burner, I am paying 5 bucks a disc, 3 bucks to rent a movie and my own time to copy it if I like it, nto to hard to do.

as to whoever said the industry is cutthroat, oh I KNOW it is cutthroat, and I have standards to this. I was in film/television when I was in college I produced and made movies/TV shows as well as running one while in college.

I will burn a copy of oceans 11, i won't burn a copy of boondock saints. I will burn a copy of major studio films like spiderman2, bourne supremecy, and movies that are HUGE that i just want to the collection.
I will also burn a copy of whatever movie i go to in the theatre and in the forn of the movie they have that
"don't pirate movies it hurts us(while showing rich movie stars and overpaid techs)"
i pirate those as soon as i get home
however I still pay for indie movies, small budget films that I truely LIKE.
call it ****ed up if you wish, but it is what i do

and you cna suck my balls for beliving that the 19 bucks i pay for a DvD are actuallly even CLOSE to what they cost to make. packaging and **** aside they are WAY over a 200% markup, major studios can shampoo my crotch for that stuff.

This says it all. Those bootlegs will probably look like crap if you play them on a 61" high-res television.

I bought my dad the LOTR Extended trilogy for Christmas and paid $90 in a retail store. $130 is outrageous.

That is actually an excellent scheme and I agree totally. p.s. - the markup on retail dvd's is closer to 1000% WITH packaging.

Go to China. Bootlegs are 1:1 on DVD9.

$1-2 for anything you want.

If its a movie I really like, I'll buy it. Otherwise, its a rental and rip from blockbuster. MPAA can "kiss my hairy yellow butt", to quote Homer Simpson.

I don't have a problem with buying bootleg DVDs (espesially of the over-hyped movies).

I don't do it (I own ONE and only one DVD), but I just don't see a "problem" with buying bootleg instead of an overpriced piece of plastic, when Hollywood's economics are just soo screwed to begin with. I mean look at a typical "blockbuster" movie... like T3, which cost $170M to make and of that, 1/5th went to ONE person, versus the hundreds of people that worked very hard on that movie. If Hollywood fixed their loose spending on overpaid stars (which makes movie ticket and DVD prices go up) their bootleg "problem" would go away. Same with the music industry.

... have you ever ripped a DVD ??? and re-compressed the video to fit a 4.7GB disk ??

most of the movies out there on DVD's barelly reach 5GB's ... the rest is just junk on the disk... and if you are able to see the difference in quality, you have a video card for a brain because there is absolutelly no difference in quality.

if you big baller with the DVD-9 purchases it will be running about 1.50, there is no reason to hit the lower quality, its is worth the extra.75 or for the higher quality.

30 bucks seems high for a bootleg
