Default Newbie (new 08 WRX)

Hi ppl,
I'm from "North" NJ and last week i went to the dealer to see the new WRX and couldnt resist so i brought it home with me.

First thing when i got home was disable the DRL. I hate that Thing.

Next thing will be the short shifter!

It has 320 miles on it now, and i notice that the dealer does 3.000 miles oil changes?! there are some specific reason to that?! or can i change the oil to Mobil 1 (i was thinking on 5W-30) maybe on 5.000 miles intevals, is that ok, or do you guys recommend something else?!

I have the 5 years /100.000 miles extended warranty, what can i change without loosing the warranty?! would a K&N CAI make me loose the warranty or should i stick to the inbox K&N Filter?!

What other "MOD's" can i do without loose the warranty?!

One thing that i feel strange is the suspension, i never had an AWD car before, in all my other cars i changed the suspension as soon as possible, but in this one i dont know what to do and if there are some kind of suspension that i can install that is covered by warranty?!

Would the BOV make me loose power on the car or the warranty?!

Do i have any way in the forum to see the members that live neer me?!

Thanks!!

Welcome to the boards. Hit up the Unibomber manifesto, and check out the warranty faq as well.

Subaru used to have a longer interval, but pulled it back down to 3,000mi fairly recently. There have been some issues with Mobil 1 changing their formula recently as well. Lots of unhappy people with spun bearings. German Castrol synthetic seems to be popular.. do lots of reading on the subject, there's a lot here. As for the intervals, stick with the recommended intervals (the first is suggested at 1,000mi.. and every 3,000 after) and get an oil analysis done to determine how long you can extend them.

I have the 5 years /100.000 miles extended warranty, what can i change without loosing the warranty?! would a K&N CAI make me loose the warranty or should i stick to the inbox K&N Filter?! Do not get a CAI. The stock intake is already pulling in cold air and can handle lots of HP. The only thing a CAI will get you is a little extra noise and a bad tune. K&N or, better yet, dry foam drop-in is the way to go.

What other "MOD's" can i do without loose the warranty?! You can't 'lose' the warranty. If you install an aftermarket part and something fails and Subaru can reasonably blame the aftermarket part for the failure, they can deny the warranty repair on the effected parts. it is illegal to comprehensively deny your warranty. A catback exhaust will not get you into any trouble.. a turboback can cause overboost issues, but it still won't cause your trans to break.. understand?

That said, I would recommend an Accessport (or open-source tuning, if you feel daring enough) for engine management.

One thing that i feel strange is the suspension, i never had an AWD car before, in all my other cars i changed the suspension as soon as possible, but in this one i dont know what to do and if there are some kind of suspension that i can install that is covered by warranty?! Same deal. Springs, shocks and swaybars cannot lead Subaru to deny your powertrain warranty. For the most part, they can only affect what they directly impact... and fortunately Subaru suspensions are rather tough.

For the most part, tuning a non-STi Subaru suspension is very similar to FWD cars... except that where a super-stiff rear swaybar on a FWD car will lift a wheel when cornering, the AWD Subaru will just waste power spinning the wheel in the air when you go to power out of a corner. For instance, the fastest Subarus I know of in autocross run a stiff front bar, stiff coilovers with stiffer effective rear spring rates and either the stock rear bar or no rear bar at all.

That said, swaybars are a must (do not just get a rear swaybar and call it a day, Subarus love front swaybars). I believe the STI Pink springs are still on special at the dealer .. under $200! (avoid excessive lowering, suspension travel is limited as it is, and the camber curve really doesn't do any favors for slammed Subarus) Nobody is currently making aftermarket shocks. Hopefully that will change this summer. There are a few coil-overs on the market, but many more should be coming later.

Oh, avoid jumping all over the chassis bracing that's out there right now. They're making a lot of useless stuff just knowing that people eager to mod will buy it.

Would the BOV make me loose power on the car or the warranty?! As already said.. just don't do it. Complete rice.. it will make your car run like crap. Intakes and BOVs are the first mods everyone new to Subarus wants to do, and they're the two most worthless first mods.

Do i have any way in the forum to see the members that live neer me?! There are regional and chapter forums. Check them out.

Thanks!!

Way to go Beaverboy...great answers.

And as recommended, I would order the STi Pink springs mentioned above immediately while the price is so low.

Just remember Subaru Recomends a 4mth/3750mi oil change interval on their Turbo Cars.

I would stick to that and keep records of all your maintenance work or else any trouble down the line could cause you problems if the car was not maintanied properly.

register on mysubaru.com and you can keep track of everything there.

I could be wrong about Subaru suggesting that. It's commonly considered part of break-in, as the first 1000mi is going to put the most metal shavings into the oil.. at least, that is, until you blow something up going mod-crazy.

Tks for the info.

I have a free service, maybe i will use it arround the 1.000 miles.

About the oil is always the same problem there are so many people talking about it, and each person has its own opinion, and i'm lost...

I always used mobil 1 and never any kind of problem, my wife car its a 2006 Jetta and uses the Castrol Syntec 5w/30 recommnded by VW (it has the logo on the bottle), in 5.000 intervals, (the oil is for 10.000), but i notice that after the 3.800/4.000 miles the car is not the same, i never noticed nothing like this with mobil 1 in other cars before, thats why i was thinking on mobil 1, i dont like the experience that i having this castrol. maybe i will be trying Valvoline, i dont know, what you gyus think?!

About the suspension, i'm going to wait some time... for now i will buy the drop in K&N Filter and the short shifter....

Thanks.
