Default How does a flywheel work and what does it do?

Searched but came up with a lot... Can anyone give me an explaination or know a site I can go too? I try howstuffworks but there isnt anything there.. thanks.

crude writing, but the flywheel is around metal plate (weighing around 25lb. for the RS) and has metal teeth around the outer edge which is meshed with the starter motor. when you turn the key, the starter rotates the flywheel, which is connected to the crankshaft and sets things in motion to get your car started. Next function, the surface of the flywheel provides a contact patch so that the clutch disc (attached to the shaft in the tranny) can engage with the flywheel, hence causing the car to move forward.

In that whole article thats the only place the flywheel is mentioned... If thats the way you choose to explain things to people then I will make sure not to ask you questions in the future. Thanks for the help.
