My main target is T1 steel and it works pretty well. .308 and larger will leave slight divots, but pistol calibers don't. It's been shot with .50 Beowolf by Brewpubeaver and myself and I'm still using it.

I've got some softer steel 12" rounds that I picked up for less than $10 and while they have some pretty deep divots they are still going strong.

Dave- you still using the rounds I left over at your place? How are they holding up? Those were the cheap soft steel rounds.

Picked up my first Glock a couple months ago. Very satisfied.. so much so that I'm getting a G42 for summer carry.

And a little EDC action..

I like using the paper human shaped targets for practicing shot placement with my carry weapon. They have some novelty kinds such as hippy printed ones and Arab terrorist ones which I think are funny. With my rifle, I like the steel "tumble targets" for shooting and if a coyote gets brave and comes within my range I'll pick one off.

If I'm at an indoor range I use note cards and draw a cross with a black sharpie on em.

Most recent purchases.

M&P Pro Series CORE 5" and a Ruger SR1911.

Added a Insight MRDS to the CORE, which will eventually be replaced with a Redfield Accelerator or Leupold Delta 2. The MRDS is alright, but you can't access the power button with the rear sight. Never been a fan of a RDS on a handgun, but this changed it for me. Can't wait to use it in a comp.

The SR1911... by far the best bang for buck 1911 you can buy right now, better than the Remington R1 Enhanced and even the STI Spartan V. Classic 1911 and best of all Series 70 internals.

I need to get my ass to the range and break in my 700 LTR 308. I got some nice rounds loaded with 168 and Varget with 42-44gr in .5gr increments. Need to see what one will shoot better. =)

Currently also working up bunch of loads for different pistol calibrs with new Hodgdon CFE Pistol powder. Thats always fun!

You did know Remington just recalled 850,000 rifles right? I'd check and see if they have a recall on your modle

I think mine has 40x trigger, but I will check when I get home. Thank Dave!

I print my own targets using shapes and sometimes colors. When doing drills with a partner at the range they can call the target and shot count (Triangle/3) which helps your mind work on different levels. My typical carry is an M&P 9C during summer and when low pro is needed. During winter I tend to carry my full size M&P with light. Home defense wise I keep my AR carbine by the bed.

As for range days, sadly I never get much time to do my own thing on the weekend but that's because I spend my entire work week on how to run the gun. By then I like to just relax and hit trails on the bike.

Here is a tip: for attaching targets to a target backer try using spray glue instead of staples. they don't pop off and it makes them quick and easy.

diff shapes, sizes, and colors are always good training aids.

Interesting choice. Id be weary of the bullet penetration with an AR for home defense. My choice is the 870.

Great read! That's awesome! I will now be using my M&P15 for my home defense weapon.

Nice Ruger, been a fan for a while. Have a SR40c right now. Most likely getting a 1911 in the near future. Looking hard at the Ruger and Sig Tacpac or nightmare. Really like the feel of the Sig. We shall see.

Thanks, I'm well aware of over penetration. I don't run ball ammo and have know what my ammo will and will not do. 870 is a great gun but I would rather not be limited to 8 rounds and slow loading.

Like most things I would make sure it is set up correctly and you know how to properly employ it. My HD carbine as a base gun is the cheapest part of the set up. Tack on the light, optic, can and laser and it's rather pricey. If my night goggles get thrown in it will make you cringe. My girlfriend could only shake her head when she realized I have night vision that cost more than my car, lol.

I have a nice rail system and foregrip with internal bipod. I also have a holo sight. I want to get a laser and flashlight combo as well. All the parts I have on my gun I got for free besides the holo sight. I noticed in the article it's the lower grain (I don't remember the exact one) you want to use for home defense. I will have to make sure I grab some.

When you consider grain or weight the main factor to consider is reliability. If it doesn't function then it is useless. Many times this can be worked past by using a lighter weight buffer or spring.

As for accessories, like building a good Subi you are going to want to buy once/ cry once. I would concentrate on a quality light. A Surefire G2X puts about 200 lumens of light for $60 and is a good deal. Jump to a Fury and you have 500 lumens for $120. Is it worth the extra money? I would say yes and both are built lights. As for lasers, most are not worth the hassle on a long gun at 2am when you are woken up from a dead sleep. Mine is slaved to my light but it isn't a typical laser. I run a B.E. Meyers EOF which will but out a softball size beam at 3 meters and WILL blind someone.

Holo sights are nice for what they are but I would hate to have to fumble with turning it on at 2am. I run Aimpoint T1 (or H1) on all of my guns. My HD carbine has had the red dot on for what will be nearly 3 years come July. Batteries are good for continuous operations up to about 5 years. But again, they aren't cheap.

My guns, all of them are Bravo Company. They are purpose built duty guns and can withstand a hell of a lot of abuse. Training guns get treated like whores and always rotated but the HD carbine is always ready to work.

No matter how much you spend on all of it, it is still just a fancy hammer. Train like your life depends on it, some day it might.

No on 594 Rally tomorrow from 11am - 2pm at Westlake Park.
https://www.facebook.com/events/380277405459329/

Come show support against an initiative that would drastically change how we can shoot, teach and do otherwise ordinary things with our firearms.

Wish I could be there and support that rally.

Vote NO on I-594 people. Even if you don't own a gun you have to understand that it can impact you. It is a poorly written initiative and literally turn you into a criminal just by handing someone your gun at a range so they can check it out.

Bullet weight should be determined by your twist rate. A fast twist like 1:7 is meant to stabilize long, heavy bullets. You can shoot light stuff like 55gr but I wouldn't go any lighter in a 1:7. Thin jacketed 45gr can break apart when spun too quickly. On the opposite end of the spectrum a 1:12 twist will have problems with heavy bullets. When you get into weights in the 60's+ you'll have problems stabilizing those bullets.

First find bullets that are in the proper weight range for your rifling. Then find the style of bullet in that weight range that feeds well. Finally, out of those bullets that feed well find the ones that meet your expansion and velocity needs.
