I have been doing tons of research on how to run my new built 2.5 bottom end with 04 Sti heads on my 03 wrx and ECU and I have all the major installation stuff figured out. only thing I'm not sure about is if running the 04 sti cams plugged will work as well as any cam for this basic build or if there is a better cam option that would help maintain the power band closer to that of an STi with avcs. Please don't tell me to run x or z just suggest cam options and your expirence with them. I'm a little concerned about my low rpm drivability end but def going non-avcs until I have more cash. obviously if the cam options are crazy expensive I'll stick with the sti cams but I would at least like to investigate my options.

Best Non-AVCS Cam Options
On the advice of Maxwell PS, mine are the original WRX cams. I wanted the low-end torque and got 340 at 16 psi. Use the extra money to buy a Blouch 18G-XT and get an E85 tune. You will not miss the AVCS.

I'm not sure if it was you that asked about the avcs cam gears but you'll also be better off using wrx cam gears with your oem or after market cams. You will need to check the bucket clearance though for the wrx cams

Run the plugged sti cams, wrx cam gears and wrx cam sensor.
Same as running sti cams in s20 heads. |

I used a good quality set screw. Something that won't seize. When I installed the set screws I used a sealing thread locker. And of course you need to tap the cams carefully.

Or if you got some money to burn get some cams. BCs are affordable (800ish) and are more mild then most other companies. Their stage 2 wrx cams would proly work well for you Have you looked into running a STI ecu and wiring the AVCS? |
