Need to replace all rotors & pads -- need suggestions
Hey all,
Time to replace all the brake pads and rotors, get it over with. Just had the 30K mile tuneup, so brake fluid is fresh. From what I'm reading, crossdrilled rotors are a bad idea for regular (yet aggressive) city driving and slotted rotors just cost more money & reduce the heat absorbing mass. Someone here said they got these rotors and pads & they worked well. Can't beat the price either; $200 for four rotors & pads! I've seen regular Brembo's for like $50 each, not including shipping. I've also PMed a number of vendors for deals, so we'll see on that. Also, should I replace the brake lines too? 205K miles, not sure if its ever been done since the car is used. Anything else? Thanks guys

I'd do the plain Brembos, they're a good deal and from what I've experienced are better than the Subaru OEM. I run them on my car and have never had any issues.
I would also replace the brake lines. 200k+ miles is quite a bit for what are probably the original rubber lines. Can't hurt to do some SS braided lines, but they're not really necessary. I've never priced the OEM lines, if they're cheaper than the SS lines you could just go with those. As for pads, well, that's one of those things that is debated over and over. Carbotech Bobcats, Hawk HPS, Hawk HP+, Axxiss Ultimates, etc etc. You could read until you're blue in the face over in the Brakes & Suspension forum. I've always run Mintex 1155s on my car, but they're kind of hard to come by now. And they apparently don't make them for the H6 rear calipers I'm running now, so my next set of pads will be Ferodo 2500s (which I've never run before). Pat Olsen '97 Legacy 2.5GT sedan |

I wouldn't waste money on special rotors or pads unless you drive the car in such a way that you actually experience brake fade or "warped" rotors.
I always used to "warp" mine, so I finally ponied up for some cryo-treated rotors from frozen rotors dot com and Hawk HP Plus pads. They have been rock solid for a couple years now. But, that only makes sense if you have that problem. |
