HUD Opinions
I was thinking about getting one, and I know there was a group buy of the a while back. Please post up you're opinions.
If you don't know what I'm talking about... the head up display (HUD) is a little thingy that projects info such as speed & rpm onto the windshield. ~Alan |

I wonder if one can hook up that HUD to a VCR and project multiple pictures of Victoria Secret models onto the windsheild.

I know a guy that has one, and on the last trip we took we got up beyond speedometer range and we actually recalled our top speed on it.
The display on it is nice, but I personally would rather it display differently (like as if I can design it myself, that'd be great). The speed display is fine, but the led's at the bottom are vague (for lack of a better term). |

Imprezer, you're full of hormones.
Well, full LCD display-based HUDs do exist, but they are far too expensive for you and me. They look way cool though - I've been playing with a mil-spec HUD from a F-4 Phantom for a few days now. -Edwin |

Actually in Japan there is a HUD option for the Impreza. If you look at some Jpn Sube websites you will find one. If not contact me later I have the 2000 Jpn Impreza Option book at home

I'm looking for doing some computer based mods to my subaru once I get the cash... I'm looking right now at a voice controlled MP3 player with hookups for other components (like windows, sunroof, A/C etc)... a HUD might be a nice thing to add to it...
Let me know if anyone finds a display that can be hooked up somehow to a computer. Then I'll do the rest of the work and maybe we can even make a few of them... |

I have the Defi HUD unit. I originally got it because it had the sequential shift light built in, which would've cost almost the same by itself.
I see the HUD as more of a convenience/rice/showoff item. I usually don't turn it on during bright sunny days. I really only use it in the winter or at night. It is also a definite Cop/SUV magnet. SUV's will ride your a$$ to see what the little blue light is on your windshield. just my $.02 |

Ive found it hard to use while racing. Its great on long trips, normal road use is ok. It attracts attention if you have it to bright at night. I think what Ill end up doing is mounting it on the dash directly over the speedo, so that the led shift light is more prominate, and just not use the display when on course. The shift light tells you all you need to know.
Its a gadget. If you like gadgets youll like it. I mounted mine so the cord comes up through the pop up tray in the center of the dash. This way when I take it down, it is totally concealed. No messy wire hanging around. |

I use mine all the time. I've got the LEDs set up to start illuminating about 1000RPM before the rev-limiter. They're all on just at the limit. Works great when I've got the stereo cranked and can't hear the engine well enough. I placed mine in a non-standard location so that the image was more directly in my line of sight. I did NOT apply the film to the windshield though, so I get a sort of double reflection. Got used to it right away.
Have not had any trouble with police due to it. Many riders ask about it, and a couple of people who've driven the car said they liked it. _Dave_ |
