System too lean, Cylinder 4 misfire and knocking sound...
I was driving out in the desert this morning and after about a half hour the check engine light went on. The codes were for a system too lean, and cylinder 4 misfire...and there's a knocking sound now from the bay...the car's driving just a little underpar...nothing extreme ...any ideas what the knocking sound may be and if its being caused by the misfire or lean? safe to drive?

Hmm, off the top of my head I suspect you need a motor. Does the knock change directly with RPM? What kind of oil do you use and have you checked it recently?
It could also be timing belt tensioners but, engine knocks seems more common. |

yea...the knock follows the rpms...oil's up to date...engine knock means what? spun a rod bearing?

If you're sure it's not an exhaust leak then rod bearing would be my first guess. Not uncommon on 02's that are running 5w30 oil too. For desert use, the manual suggests a thicker oil (assuming it's really hot) like a 10w40.
"Oil Up to date" doesn't tell me you pulled out the dipstick and checked the level. |

Very dusty in the desert, check your air filter and maf. The maf resistor is transparent if you cant see it you need to clean it. Fixed my problem.

check your plugs
compression test and put a long screw driver to the intake runner above the knocking cylinder and place your ear to the screw driver...if you spun a rod bearing you will hear it..as you already do.. |

I had a similar problem, but instead of spinning a bearing, I scored a head when a bucket shattered. It gave much of the same indications (ran fine, rpm dependent). Good stuff, but just to add, change your oil. If there's metal flakes, it'll tell you what you need to know....
