Trans swap options and compatibility
Info: 2006 Saabaru (‘06 wrx wagon) manual trans, 170k miles
At 130k miles the throwout bearing went out so I did the clutch at the same time. I saw a good amount of snout damage from the throwout bearing. I knew the right way was to use the snout repair kit, but I was leaving for work travel the next day. I just greased the heck out of it and hoped for the best. It lasted 40k miles but has started to hangup. I can either use the repair kit now, or do a trans swap. I always wanted a more aggressive final drive but what transmissions are my options. I know 5 speeds made from ‘02’-‘07 are fair game (as long as they’re push type). But what about 2008 and newer? There is a 2008 non turbo Impreza at a local junkyard. Can I use that trans and diff? What about other transmissions made 2008 and newer?

The Forester XT comes with the 4.44 FD, however, I think it is pull style. The 02-05 WRXs are pull style as well.
The GR WRX has a close ratio gear set which is my favorite of the 5MTs. One thing to keep in mind is that the GRs use ABS for the speedo so you will have to figure something out get your speedo working. Personally, I would avoid any non-turbo 5MT on a turbo car. Here's a chart (it is outdated) if you want to look over most of your options. There are a lot of JDM 5MTs on eBay. Many of them are pull style though. http://www.gearhack.com/myink/ViewPa...ission%20Chart |

I found this trans ty754vcdda out of a 2003 legacy. It’s a 4.11 push. Can anyone comment on if the rear diff will bolt up to my Saabaru? What about strength of trans (vs my current 2006 turbo 5mt)?

I’ll probably use the sleeve repair kit for $60 from Amazon until I sort this.

From what Subaru has given us, for your car I personally would find a 99-04 JDM pull type 5spd with 4.444 if i was wanting better gearing and overall transmission condition. It'll make the car more lively and peppy. Highway cruising engine speeds are a bit higher, but I'm ok with that.

4:44 xt trans is much more peppy than even the 4.11 in my fx or way more than the 3.90 in my wrx
