If we are going by CR's recommendation check marks then it looks like Autotrader's best new car for 2022 is also not recommended by CR...

https://www.cookvw.com/blog/autotrad...022-award/amp/

The GTI is not recommended...ROFL CR.

CR never recommends cars with below average reliability scores or predicted reliability scores, period. Always been that way.

Does anyone actually read CR? Especially for an enthusiast car.

GTI not recommended? Let me guess...because of infotainment? LOL. Not exactly why we buy these cars.

Nope. That's only for educated consumers that want to make educated decisions. Some of us base our decisions on looks only. And as we all know the WRX is definitely a looker, I mean golf ball pattern on plastic cladding which adds 1MPG is just too damn technical for me. I am sold on the Lamborghini Urus style cladding foh sho!

I think CR readership is directly correlated to AARP membership.

Stranger danger...

Giulia is awesome, just needs a 6MT and I'd be set for life.

Yes, 100%. I think you just have to pay to receive one of a zillion annual JDP awards.

I'd definitely tell my kid to get an SI, if he didn't live in the snow. The SI and the GTI are great packages. I still love Honda, im excited for whats to come in their racing division, Hyundai is hot on their tail. Still love my car though, hits home everywhere my 4th gen LGT did, didn't kill the bank.
Still going to bed-line the cladding though

People's beliefs of the legitimacy of CR and JD Power is usually directly proportional to the scores their vehicle of choice gets.

CR is pretty damn consistent, especially over the last 25 years or so I've paid attention to them. Their reviews are NOT based on enthusiast concerns though, very much on whats important to the average non-car-person consumer & family. You can easily track issues with every model and brand over the course of their history, or the lack of issues just as well. Scoring is highly standardized and they go out of their way to be as objective as possible and not just with cars obviously. IIRC Subaru was the highest rated manufacturer last year too, because the WRX fell off its list of scores for a year

JD Power on the other hand, EXTREMELY irratic with rankings. Brands with terrible CR reliability wind up at the top of JD Power reliability lists all of a sudden, year after year rankings chang wildly, and their methods have never been based on the most objective testing...

Agreed. I love what CR had to say about the WRX when it comes to what really matters in a sports sedan:

"It's a mighty quick car...We enjoy the six-speed's manual robust and accurate feel...Handling is the WRX's virtue. It posted one of the highest speeds through our avoidance maneuver...The taut suspension gives the WRX a keep ability to gobble curvy back roads, while the all-wheel drive puts down power like a car on Velcro".

WRX got dinged a lot for not having standard collision intervention, driving control assistance, and collision warnings. In 11 categories, it had none of those features as standard. SI has 10 and GTI has 11.

Why is the GTI worse in Usability and Trunk/Cargo Capacity compared to the sedans?

Illuminati confirmed.

Cargo/Trunk area is quite a bit shorter in length, plus overall capacity as measured is technically less (The WRX trunk is HUGE) but yes it doesn't make 100% sense because of the ability to load all the way to the roof.

Usability:
Our expert judgment of the clarity, intuitiveness, placement, and ease of use.

They don't say of what... I'm assuming this has to do with the Haptic Touch mess.

The Trunk/Cargo Capacity is a fitment test (I'm assuming seats up). Civic fit 3 large suitcases and one smaller duffle. WRX 2 large suitcases and 2 smaller duffles. GTI fit 1 large suitcase and 3 smaller duffels.

Our GTI drove fine on multiple 1400 mile round trips with two adults two kids and a small dog and all our ****. Drove fine with 7 track days. We're making a move soon...she'll drive fine.

She drives fine.
