Cool Project Porsche 914 Update

After getting the thing started, Len Seroka and I listened to the engine a bit. There was a loud knocking sound on the left side of the engine. After draining the oil we determined the engine has a bearing out of it.

I've decided to pull the engine out this week or the next and re-build it. I'm probably going to increase the displacement from 1.7L to about 2.0L or more. I'll be doing this with different rods, pistons, and probably a different crankshaft.

My final plan on this car:
This engine is going to get a different intake manifold, different pistons, rods, rings, crankshaft, etc. I'm getting rid of the electronic fuel injection that's on the car and throwing it in the trash. I'm going to go with two Weber carbuerators (sp). After I get the engine running well with that, I'll make some new pipes and stick a turbocharger on the engine. It should be a fairly simple thing to do. These VW/Porsche boxer engines are so simple it's amazing.

Now I know where Subaru stole thier design for the boxer engine. The Subaru engine was really cool when it first came out because it was basically a water-cooled Volkswagon engine. VW engines are air-cooled.

Later,
Tom Richardson, Jr.

Sounds good Tom. If you could use an extra set of hands, I'm not to far away and love a good 'wrench'. Just email me or PM me.

Wow, that sounds like a lot of work. How long before the project is done so I can autocross it for you?
