Default 4eat tranny specialists please HELP! no 3rd or 4th gears please help!!!

I have been trying to get info on this for months. I have a 91 leggy turbo with the 4eat auto. I got in it and let it warm up for 10 mins or so backed out of the drive way put it in drive and slowly took off wasnt beating on it just driving normal it shifted out of first into second and i was going down hill so i wasnt on the throttle i was just coasting got to the stop sign and took off again it shifted out of first into second and it just stays in second if i step on it and get going about 40 and let off of it it just free wheels it doesnt even try to go into 4rth either. If i lock it in 2nd it will slow down on decompression and stay in second but if i shift to 3rd it just goes into neutral until i slow down enough for second to take over again. Any help will be greatly appreciated Thank you for your time and wisdom BILL

Default serious this is a 91 not my 93

there is no way that this can happen to two cars with the same drive train with out there being some kind of a reason the 93 i bought it that way this car i was driving i have 4 of these turbo autos and 4 5mts all years there is somthing else happening here. does the front band control 3rd and 4rth it makes no sence that it wouldnt have 4rth i could see 1 gear but not two at the same time they must have two different valves in the body if third doesnt work why wont fourth? I also have a pm from a xt6 owner that is having the same problem so what can it be? Thanks for any help out there. BILL

Default duty solinoid?

where is that? Is it in the valve body? I took off the valve body to see if there was any thing amiss but i dont know really what to look for other than broken wires or somthing loose i did remeber seeing a couple of solinoids in there does one of them control the 3-4 shift? Thanks for any help BILL

Solenoids are located in the valve body, yes.

Head to the link below.

http://www.endwrench.com/archive/sysdrive.html

The duty solenoid receives voltage from the TCU and helps to control the transmission gears. Read up on the Phase I transmission and find out about any recalls or issues with whatever solenoid (C, I think) controls gears 3 and 4 (overdrive).

I can't help much else other than that. I don't know enough about the inner workings of the 4EAT to go any further than that.

I have a 93 legacy I'm driving temorarally and it is having trouble going into third (feels like I'm hitting the brakes when it goes to engage third)....after I fix my forester I'm going to rebuild the transmission...I'll let you know what I find

btw..the high clutch is needed for both third and fourth gear

low cluth + high clutch = third gear

high clutch + front band aka 2-4 brake(band) = fouth gear

Default shift into third is like hitting the brakes.

read up on the link your shift into third say the front band is to tight if it feels like it is braking when shifting into third. It dosnt say how the solinoids ground to fault i am asumeing that it is to chasis ground through the tranny housing? If i have someone manually run it through the gears in manual mode the solinoids 1st and second are actuating but nothing in 3rd or 4rth but i dont think it works in manual mode it start off in third unless it is in limp mode. know i really am lost i guess i will have to take one apart and see how it works and put a 727 valve body in it. unless any body else has any idears? I was wondering if you were able to figure out why your legacy was not shifting into third? My 93' legacy is also having same issues and was thinking it could be the shift solenoid 2 or 1 or maybe the 2-4 brake duty solenoid? Any information would be helpful on what you figured on this.

If I am able to figure this out, I will also let this thread know.

I am looking in the maintenance manual on the 4EAT Legacy up to 1999 and it gives A-B sensors which are behind the oil pan and some resistance to measure if a solenoid is faulty. Which would be the high clutch solenoid?

The above post is for a 99+ valve body...totally different if yours is earlier

Sounds like you are in default mode...limp mode..whatever you want to call it you can confirm this by disconnecting the harness to the valve body from the vehicle wiring on top center of the trans front case.
if it drives the same then you know. If thats the case, start at the tcu
borrow a good one work your way down..could even be a bad connection at the 2 connections top center trans case one goes inside trans other to switch..but it sounds electrical.cheers

Thank you for info. I will find the correct manual and try some troubleshooting.

Default So what did you do to fix the "won't go into 3rd gear" problem?

I'm working on a 92 Subaru Legacy AWD 4EAT and it also will not shift into 3rd gear, it does go 1st gear to 2nd gear okay. I found that the shift solenoid with the blue wires ohm tested over the normal 18 to 33 ohm specs at 47 ohms. But I'm also getting TCU error codes 32 and 33. What should I do next to fix this? What parts do I need? Where do you recommend that I get the parts?

I ended up selling the vehicle as is to someone who was going to have a transmission shop fix the issue. I pulled a full set of solenoids from a valvebody on a 93' legacy at a wrecking yard. If anyone is interested I can ship. I wish I knew more on automatic transmissions and to what is causing it to not shift into 3rd. Wish I could be more help.

You know sometimes just getting a used transmission from a junkyard is easiest and cheaper. Why rebuild a 4 eat when there is plenty for sale working.

If they were easily available I would. Most wrecking yards in this area want 600usd+. If everyone continues to do this and throw away the faulty transmissions with only a solenoid to be replaced, in 50 years there will be none available.
