Maxxis Victra RC-1 Tires
I recently worked with Ritche Tay of Maxxis on a set of their new Victra RC-1 r-comp, track day/race tires.
By way of background, I am an instructor with NASA and several private track day companies, and drive a 2007 WRX Wagon, converted to a built STI disguised as a Family Truckster. I have used a variety of tires on a variety of platforms over the years, most recently, Nitto NT01s on the Wagon over the last couple of years. The Wagon is a daily driver/track car. The RC-1s are an excellent tire, right out of grid, and maintain great feel over the course of the entire 15-20 minute track sessions. I found cold starting pressures of 29 psi, heating up to 36-37 psi worked best at Road Atlanta. The tires have stiffer sidewalls than the Nittos, are grippier from beginning to end of each session and throughout the day. When pushed to and past their limits, the tires breakaway in an easy to control, linear fashion, and provide great communication back to the cockpit. The wear at the end of the weekend was pretty limited and impressive, but time will be the true test for the long run. Here's a link to the Maxxis RC-1 site, for anyone interested: http://www.maxxisrc1.com/ Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. I wanted to help get the word out about another affordable, longer-lasting option for the track day guys and gals out there. I waited for a while for the tires to be released, as I used to race bicycles and liked the Maxxis stuff for bikes. Len

How are they compared to something like a C70 or an A6?
This is legit curiosity as I'm always looking for a better tire. ALWAYS, and frankly the Nittos weren't really our cup of tea. |

Wow! thanks for the review. These tires are definitely a good option to save money when purchasing r-compounds.

Turn In:
Admittedly, I have not been out on the C70s (Hankook, right?). I have spent some time on the Hoosiers, both A6s and R6s. I would compare the grip level very favorably with the R6s on track, and expect better wear characteristics over the long run, but again, last weekend was the first weekend out on them, so I will let you guys know over time. I used the A6s for autocross, but put them on the track a few times as well. A little softer than the R6s, and probably not the best choice for longevity on the track, in my opinion, but a great autocross tire. I will be instructing at Barber Motorsports Park coming up next weekend, followed by Carolina Motorsports Park the first weekend of November, then to Atlanta Motorsports Park for an event where the track is providing a free track day for vets on Veterans Day. I could get about 6 months out of a set of Nittos with an average of an event one weekend a month, sometimes more than one. I liked them OK, but I really prefer what I experienced with the Maxxis tires over the weekend, in fact the grip levels worked the suspension just that little bit more, and there is quite a bit under the car (minus coilovers - and yes, I know, I wish, but I bought the car with a few things under it and just worked from that starting point to make it as good as possible without coilovers). These tires are dry condition only tires, or marginally damp at best, so either a set of wets or, like me, have some sticky street tires on the street wheels to use in wet conditions. Len |

Here's a shot of the Family Truckster, rolling through the Esses, using a little curbing with the Maxxis Victra RC-1s under her at Road Atlanta:

I recently ran the RC-1s and wasn't thrilled with them. They were good for a couple laps, but then lost a lot of grip. Admittedly I was still working on pressures, but I got to the point of them being around 38 hot and still wasn't thrilled. To me they didn't feel like they had any more grip than NT-01s. I'll be trying them again in a little over a month, in cooler temps, so we'll see how they do then. Definitely a decent HPDE tire for the money, but I definitely would NOT compare them to R6 grip level. More like an NT-01, R888, RA-1.

mav1c:
To be clear, and my comment probably wasn't, I don't think that they are quite up to R6 grip levels, but meant that they "compared favorably" with them and should last longer. I realize now that my comment wasn't all that clear. I was just trying to respond to Turn In's comments where the A6 was mentioned. I have also used Kumho V710s on track, and the Maxxis RC-1s aren't quite up to that grip level either, but I think, based on the limited wear I observed and (admittedly limited experience with them) that they should last longer than the truly more dedicated race tires. I think your group of tires to compare the RC-1s with is a good selection and representation of tires for the track day crowd to compare the RC-1s to. My experience was a little different with the RC-1s than yours during my first outing on them at Road Atlanta. First, it was unseasonably cool over that weekend, with highs in the heat of the day only around the upper 70's, and the morning sessions were easily in the upper 50's - lower 60's when I was on track. I had to play with pressures a bit, too, settling where I did as stated above - 29 psi cold, 36-37 psi hot right off the track. Perhaps it was having been out on well-worn NT01s the last couple of events, but the grip level of the RC-1s was much better feeling than the NT01s to me, and, the thing that surprises me the most about our different experiences, is that they not only gripped great right out of the grid, but maintained a high level of grip throughout the 15-20 minute sessions for me. I know what it's like to have tires give up, get greasy feeling, whatever, after being out on them for awhile, but the RC-1s hung in there for me in every session throughout the day. The RC-1s sidewalls also seem to be a bit stiffer and resist rollover better than the Nittos. I was using 235 40 17s on Enkei RPF1s in 17" x 8". After this first outing, I would have to say that I much prefer them over the NT01s. To re-emphasize in order to be clear and fair - Maxxis was very kind to me in working with me to get a set of these tires, but before they offered anything to me, I had my eyes on the adds and website information out there about these tires going to be released, and was wanting to give them a try as the bike tires I am familiar with from Maxxis have always been quality stuff. I know there is a big difference in platforms, but still, I was hoping for consistency in quality in their products, and I think I am confirming that in my observations from my outing with them at Road Atlanta. I was not asked to post anything by Maxxis, but I offered to post my honest observations and comments about the tires in exchange for working with me on a set. Len |

Blast, no 255/35R18 size. Curious how the VR1 would stack up against RE71Rs

I've read on some M3 forums that the RC-1's require going down one size due to Maxxis tires being wider than other manufacturers. Has anyone run them and had this similar situation happen to them? My track set of wheels run 245/40/18 tires, but they only make 235/40/18. I would hate to order them on this hunch and then realize that they can't be mounted.

A 235/40-18 is smaller in width and diameter, so be careful there. http://www.rimsntires.com/specspro.jsp |

Anyone else have any time on the RC1s? Just mounted up a set that I had picked up earlier this year during the sale that mav1c posted about. 275/35-18s, going on my heavy CTS-V (~4000# with driver in track trim). mav1c and Len both ended up in the upper 30s. This thread said they were in the mid-30s.
Not a huge difference, I suppose, just looking for some more data points. |

I've used them in 255/40/17 on my trackday biased pretty much fully built and fairly dialed in 04 sti
for me ............ they seemed to not care so much for scorching hot days , they get greasy if pushed hard in the heat like most other street tires would they like to be eased up to temp or can go greasy, no record setting out lap on these kids wear like iron compared to "real" slicks , they are really a street tire imho and act like them wear better than the asstd "hot dog" street tires I have tracked on with maybe a bit more grip than some and on par or maybe a smidge better than say re-11a/71 or stars , more stable tread because they look like slicks ? seem to like upper mid/high 30's psi are VERY easy to drive hard , predictable and forgiving, no real surprises at all , full on ken block if you like and they still drive forward while spinning / lots of slip / drifting idiocracies . no sit and spin like some other tires , hell you can change a cd or light a smoke as they do not "scare you into full attention/concentration" on the hot (95 humid and sunny) day I pepsi challenged them with nt01's and i'll take the rc-1's unless it's wet and for that I would take the rs3's or ad08r . low 80's day against my re-11a and flip a coin no way would I consider them a sprint/time attack tire ymmv |

Thanks for the details. This is definitely just an HPDE car, so good wear characteristics and solid (but not earth-shattering) performance is fine with me.

Did 3 days at VIR on the RC-1s, ran all but 1 session over the 3 days. As per their reputation, the tires appear to be very durable - didn't seem to wear much at all. Admittedly, temps were very mild, what with it being an early November event. Even turned some decent lap times, considering they're not the grippiest tires in the world. I'm pretty happy - particularly since I got them for 20% off.

Yeah. I was impressed with the longevity. After 6 days on track, they didn't show a lot of wear. I'd say they have the grip on an NT-01, but last twice as long.
