How does Huyundai 'swapping' engines work?
Is it much like the Subaru world where you can throw just about any engine from the lineup in another cars frame?
Just wondering because as I get more interested in Auto-X as an alternative for fun, I'm looking more and more for a absolutely small beater piece of trash that I can swap a nice-er motor in for fun. Ie this: With maybe the Tiburon GT engine, or even the 4 cyl. because they have some supercharger/ turbo kits for those things. Mild boost (Don't needs t3h powerzz, it is Auto-X after all) Worth picking up a crappy Excel and working towards this? It'd be sleeper as well, I might even add some rust and dents to deter thieves

Step 1: Remove Hyundai engine
Step 2: Install Mitsu engine the 4G63 is just about a physical drop-in for some years of the Elantra and Accent |

A buttload? Far from it. Last time I checked(it's been a while) you could get a used 4G63 long block delivered to your door for about a grand. |

Hmm, yummy. I found a Hyundai forum I'll be lambasting with questions. I'm going to try to con my local used lot to let me have the 94 Excel for 300$. A Project car would rock since I'm going to have excess time come this spring, even with a full time j0rb.

Each of the long blocks I've had have had upgraded pistons/rods for about that price. I don't know if supply has dropped since then, but I can't imagine it getting anymore expensive. |

I think I wouldn't care so much about winning.....as I would about being able to beat the piss out of a >3K$ project car.
So far in my readings an Accent will take a 4 cylinder Tiburon engine from any year. Apparently the 4 cyl Tiburon engine is actually fairly bullet proof and has some aftermarket going for it. This is just a theoretical thread really, I saw a real cheap beater car and my itch to have a project car resurfaced. I think the reason why I don't want to go Suby is because I want a ridiculously lightweight car that I have 0 respect for so I don't feel bad hacking it to pieces to serve my needs. If I was to get an older Suby, it'd be a base Impreza or Legacy 2WD. |

I'm gonna be honest, I'd rather than be in a Civic at an Auto-X. 1.) there's too many of them. 2.) I don't like Honda 2.) PartB: Unless it is an S2000.
I would actually love to have a RWD car such as a Fiero or MR2 for Auto-X, but the value makes it impossible to find a cheap one. With a working engine. I'd thoroughly rock a RWD (converted) Subaru though! Actually, this idea is REALLY intriguing as I look into. Unfortunately, finding an AWD Version for cheap is IMPOSSIBLE in Pennsylvania, especially this time of year. I'd rock a RWD Impreza/Legacy in a heartbeat Last edited by ScubaruImpreza05; 11-21-2007 at 05:15 PM. |

If you're goal is autox then you should be first focusing on a car that is known for having exceptional handling (or potiential for it) then think about power later. Power is easy to add even to the schittiest of cars with forced induction if you like. Making a terribly balanced car handle is a major undertaking and sometimes impractical. You can't approach autox like drag racing and just slap a bigger motor in it and expect to have an intrinsically "better" car.

Hence the lightweight, beatable car. If my 120 HP car weighs 2200 lbs., and someone elses 155 hp car weighs 3100 lbs., I have an odd feeling I'll have an edge on him in the corners. A set of stickies, some struts and springs, and some power to push it around, and you can do wonders. Anyways, I have another idea involving my fat ass car, so we'll see. |

Back when I had my Talon, I recall seeing on the Mitsu boards that you could pick up a brand new factory built 4G63 for $2000.
