02 wrx - only putting out 7 psi boost
UPDATE: see last page
BACKGROUND: I just picked up an 02 WRX last week and i have been replacing **** on it that was broken. The latest thing was a replacement aftermarket up-pipe and a boost gauge. PROBLEM: I read about 20 vacuum at idle, and when i get on the gas i hit 7 psi, in all gears. I disconnected the battery to install a head unit and ran it for about 30 miles before i did the up pipe. I know a lot about hondas as i have had 4 integras/civics swapped them, and then turbo'd them. I was looking at it today and im guessing the boost control soleniod is the blue peice off to the passenger side of the car w/ the WG and inlet vac lines going to it. I dont know if it works, but it is hooked up. I was poking around in the bay and found an HKS T line off the BOV, and it was leading up into the clock area. I disconnected it and it seemed to have no effect on how it ran. Possibly lead to an aftermarket boost controller that had since been removed or is still in? maybe a boost gauge?

- Yes, its the bcs if there are no leaks and everything seems connected you should be okay. Possibly lead to an aftermarket boost controller that had since been removed or is still in? maybe a boost gauge? - Yes, thats the tap for the boost gauge with that open (leaking air) your going to have a boost leak which is probably causing your low boost pressure. Close that off and try again.. if its still running low boost change out the bcs and check your vacuum lines. |

I actually ran my Boost gauge off that T that i found and its only reading 7 psi still with that leak sealed off.
We are testing the BCS according to the service manual at the moment. |

whiles your thre check to see if your lines from the bcs to the turbo are routed probably and not leaking it sounds like your running on spring pressure and your bcs is dead..

Everything about the BCS troubleshooting says that the ECM needs replaced. I looked at the ECM and it looks like some of the plugs have been taken out.
Is it possible that the vac line i found was an electronic boost controller and the ECU is tuned to disable the BCS? |

Prolly has lines hooked up incorrectly. Check the wastegate vacumn lines and compressor housing lines

I doubt that it is a leak, if it was a leak i doubt id be seeing 20 @ idle. Also the boost levels dont really change from 7 psi like a leak. I had an interally gated 48 trim t3 on an older car and it acted the same way. I dont think the BCS is engaging at all, now whether it is the ECU or the BCS is what im trying to figure out. Ill look at my BCS vac lines tomorrow perhaps they are swapped, but all of my other lines are hooked up correctly that was the first thing i checked. Going to call and get a price on a new BCS tomorrow anyways.

Make sure you have the infamous pill in there, assuming the lines are connected correctly.

May as well spring for a good EBCS or MBC (just make sure you know about PTFB etc..).

I can't view Photobucket pics at work. However, It sounds like your boost control system is a hackjob that was returned to stock. Take a look at this article to get a little more insight on the Subaru boost control system.
Subaru Boost Control Explained V1.09 http://www.cobbtuning.com/info/?ID=3482 As it was mentioned earlier, make sure that you've got the correct restrictor pill in the correct lines. 7psi is definitely wastegate boost. With you having proper vacuum at idle, I'm going to chalk it up to lines not being hooked up correctly. |

im having the same exact problem man. i went on alldata and it says the reason for a p0246 code is a faulty/bad ecm and a faulty bcs. i swapped a different motor and my 18g wasnt making any boost AT ALL. installed a DOM 3 last night.. NO BOOST AT ALL. i dont know what the heck it is, but i used to hear clicking from my passenger side when i was on the throttle going into boost, i no longer hear that. so i am also wondering if its the bcs or ecm. or both. now heres the OTHER thing... im running a manual boost controller and an external wastegate...which shouldnt use an EBCS in the first place.

Parallel EBCS with MBC is a pretty solid solution. EBCS controls part throttle and IWG, and the MBC contolls WOT and EWG. There's a thread around here somewhere with all the info on it.

that was what i had before, only there was no IWG. so i dont know exactly what the ebcs was doing.. maybe just recieving a signal from the EMS and fooling it, to allowing boost to build, and then the boost was actually controlled manually (MBC,EWG).. would a re-tune or re-flash cure the EMS or would i need a new one no matter what because of the previous catastrophic engine failure..

Has the turbo been replaced? If so and it was from a 2006+ model you probably have the wrong wastegate. Swap it out for the original.

Brace the waste gate arm so it will not open up. Go for a spin around the block and roll up into boost very slowly. If you can get above 7psi its a 99.9% chance your boost controller is bad. I'd just put a manual BC on it and call it a day.

Have you considered that the boost solenoid is dead and needs replacement. As 7psi is common with this problem.

i think the restrictor pill is missing. I briefly attempted to feel it after driving the other day and was unable to find it. I will be looking at it more closely tomorrow. Just drove from PA to Salt Lake City.

Im new to this site and well, I purchased my Subie 1 year ago and its always been a bit slugish. Its always pushed around 7pis boost and I know it has alot more potential! Ive read over all the info on here and it sounds like my turbo is ghetto rigged! I looked at the pics from cobbtuning.com it looks like my car is missing the t fitting and the waste gate solenoid? Was wondering where it is on my car. Pls help...

well thanks for jacking my thread. Jer;embo go read up so u know what parts are supposed to be there
I am missing the restrictor pill in my inlet-to-T vac line. is there a part no i can get from autozone or do i need to get that from the dealer??? If that doesnt fix it, new boost control it will be. There are a few yards around here, is the vac line/pill the same for 02-05, or even more cars? Thanks, Bill |
