Default Places to ride ATVs in CT (legally)

So i bought a quad this summer, havent had once since I sold my banshee to buy a car when I was 16. Picked up a 2003 400ex that was barely used for an awesome price. I have about 20 acres of woods behind my house but thats getting boring so I am wondering do where fellow NESICers ride in CT??? I know new places are always popping up and old ones are getting shut down so where does everyone go now? I am in SW CT so the closer the better...

The only place I know thats legal to ride is Thomaston Dam...and personally ..I think the place sucks...too small...crowded...and the trails just bite...( for the novice dirt biker that I am) Rocky..heck I even found it to suck snowmobiling there in the winter unless there is some deep pack. Plus your ride has to be registered to ride there...CT is aweful for offroaders...I was spoiled in upstate NY and back home in PA..100s upon 100s of acres right across the street..plus Offroad parks with miles and miles of trails.

I work for the DEP in CT and trust me there are no legal PUBLIC riding areas. There was a place in Meriden called Higby Hollow but was closed by the town.
I also have owned a few quads a polaris 99 400 scrambler 4x4 and a 94 honda four trax 300 4x4, but was limited to riding them in the woods behind my parents house (only about 10 acres).
The thomaston damn is not a legal quad area, you can only ride dirt bikes there.
The only 2 suggestions that I can think of are to find a friend who lives in mass, nh, me, or ny, where quads are allowed to be riden legally, or become a part of an atv club that either has land donations for them to ride on, or takes trips north to legal riding areas.
I know this sucks horribly but there's nothing to be done about it.
I have looked into the problem quite extensivly talking with CT foresters and Conservation Officers and the problem is the lack of any sizable piece of land. In order to be able to open a public place to ride there has to be a conciderable amount of land, or people would be on top of each other, and something that large is usually already being used as a State Park. CT just doesn't have enough open space to obtain a large unused piece of land.
Good luck finding some places to ride. Hope you do better than I could.
Steve

Best recommendation is to get into a club (MX, Trail riders, etc.). There is essentially NOWHERE to legally ride in CT/RI unless it's part of a "Sanctioned" event, such as a club sponsored ride.
I lived in PA and could ride all day, never hitting the same trail twice... moved to CT and RI and ended up selling the bike out of frustration.

Check out the Mass locations in the Berkshires.

http://www.mass.gov/dcr/recreate/ohv/ohv_permit.htm

The permits are free and you can get them in advance. If you get an advanced permit and don't plan to ride CALL and cancel. Too many no-shows and you're booted. Check on registration as I don't know what they do with ATVs for registration (I know for snowmobiles, you have to register in any state you ride)

That feel when OP was looking for places to ride 5 years ago. I'm sure he found a place to ride by now, or at least bought MX vs ATV: Untamed cause that came out in 2007 as well. Thanks for the necro-bump though, I lol'd

Sorry to spark a old thread, but hey Steve, I know Dave the DEP property management for the New Britain res over by county Rd in Wolcott.

And Dirtbikes and quads are a big problem over here as you probably know.

1 kid was killed on the gate coming out one rainy night on Beecher Rd, and recently one kid was carted out because of a broken leg.

But it all comes down to what your saying, which is there are no places for us to ride legally in CT, dirtbike have Thompson dam, but quads have nothing but privately owned property.

The Wolcott police have got involved so much that they bought a UTV, the BRP Maverick.

1000cc, 101HP capable of 75 MPH.

13 inch ground clearance with only a 60 inch wide wheel base.

All this time and money to keep us out, could be spent to make trails and maintain them for us to ride, and ride away from the water edge.

The DEP patrols it so much, that I don't see why we can't make a compromise, you'd probably spend less fixing trails, and keeping dave down there to keep the peace, then what your doing now.

Something has to be worked out here in CT, cause kids will run, and run hard to be able to ride where they want, and chasing them so they crash or get hurt, only to give em a ticket, and take their bike, is not the answer.

And stricter laws are not the answer either, that will just make kids start stealing them so if they get caught, or have to dump it and run, it's okay, cause it's not theirs.

You're responding to a thread that has not been touched in over 4 years, to respond to someone that posted almost 11 years ago and who has not been active on this site for over a year....good luck.
