Rear Wheel Bearing Issue
This morning I notice that growing hummmmmm again in the rear of my car. I know exactly what it is, a rear wheel bearing. It's not loud enough at this point for me to tell which side but I'm sure I'll soon find out. I think it may be the right side.
My issue with this is that I just replaced the right wheel bearing not even six months ago, to the tune of 300 bux. IF it turns out to be the left one then I'll be okay with it, but if not- what could be the problem?? I don't rally or drive crazy (not all the time ) and I do really good maintenance on the car. Any suggestions/advice you could give me would be great. Thanks. Brandee

I just had the right-rear replaced by Subaru last February (went to them becuase I had my MBNA credits). In mid-March the noise started coming back...I think it's the right-rear again.
I knew this would happen....that's why I specifically asked about their warranty, which is 1 year. I tried to get them to use the Legacy bearing instead, but they would not warranty their work if a non-standard part was used....so I had them put in the POS OE bearing. |

I'm currently having the same problem but I'm not sure which rear bearing it is. Why is the Legacy bearing better than OE?

Are you running aftermarket wheels? What size tires do you have on the car?

The legacy bearings are sealed units the Impreza one's are not.
Last time I had mine done (3rd time) they said the was a TSB and had used different spindles to cure the problem. to save money you can get the parts from NAPA Legacy 4wd rear wheel bearing: - subaru part #: 28016AA030 - $100 - napa part #: GRW175 - $37 (both are NTN 4T-CR1-08A05 bearings) It's actually pretty easy to get your rear knuckle out, then just take it to a shop and have them press the hub and old bearing out, then press in the new bearing. Then re-pack the bearing with waterproof grease and install. You could probably do the whole thing for $150. |

same here
I recently had my left rear wheel bearing replaced under warranty. Seems like a lot of people are experiencing this problem, but it seems like more rear than front are failing. Why is this??

According to my dealership it is due to the Rear spindle design.

i had my right rear (passenger side rear) replaced about 2K miles ago, at 20K miles. the dealer told me that they replaced them with legacy bearings, which i was surprised (and happy) to hear.

I was never able to get mine replaced under warranty. They said it was a first year/wear-n-tear item only.
If it is caused by the rear spindle, how in the hell can I minimize this? I love this car but if I have to do this every six months that'd be lame. Slater- they did replace your's with Legacy??? If they can then I'm willing to try that. Brandee |

brandee,
yes, they replaced them with legacy bearings, and i didn't even ask for them. apparently they've seen this before. if you can't get it done under warranty, go to napa or advance auto or any of those places and just get the legacy bearings, then you won't have to worry about it anymore. best of luck! peter |

I think tapered roller bearings are better at handling side loads. Otherwise, the two bearings are identical on the outside, exact same dimensions. I don't know why any dealer wouldn't use them. When I went to buy a bearing, they asked me if I wanted the Legacy one instead. |

All of these post about bad bearings are freaking me out! I have 29k miles on my RS and haven't noticed any real problems. But there is this intermittent humming sound that is most noticeable at 70 mph. I always thought it was either the radiator fan, the tires, or wind noise. It's not that loud and it doesn't affect handling and since I've noticed the sound since the car was new I just got used to it and thought it was a characteristic of the car. After 29k, is it safe to assume that my bearings will be ok? I mean, if they were defective they would have failed a long time ago, right?

Don't get freaked out by bearing reports. I had 2 go at about 100,000 miles... that was because I donutted the right side of my car into a 6" high curb that was hidden by snow. Then I had one go at about 140,000 miles. I still have one original at 147,000 miles.
Oh yeah... and I'm not nice to my RS at all. Chuck |

I'm not sure if it's under the 3yr/36K or the 5yr/60K powertrain warranty. All I know is that my friend took his car (with a failed 96 Legacy OB left rear wheel bearing) to the dealer and the dealer repaired it under warranty. And this at 59K miles and 1 month left on the PT warranty. That leads me to believe that it "is" part of the PT warranty covered items.
Worth a check. Br, Dale |

RageHardIntoTheBendies,
Thanks for posting the part #'s but are you sure about the prices? I went to NAPA today and they quoted me a price of $57.00 per bearing plus $13.00 for seals plus tax for a total cost of $76.00. |
