Default My 08 WRX and Hill Assist

Now I will admit I did not even know the car had it when I purchased it. Great job subaru sales guy!!! Anyways I saw someone mention it on here afterwards and realized it was true. Now for a NOOB to manual this was a monkey off my back. One of my worst fears is here in NY peeps are always on ur azz and I did not want to back into some old lady cause i'm learning to drive stick. Now that I have had a chance to really analyze the system I think its not always so great. Sometimes on a steeper grade like 30% which I know is rather steep it lets go quicker than expected. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a trick to making it work right every time? If not I'm gonna have to start using the E-brake on bigger hills.

Its annoing in the beggining but after you get the hang of it it is awesome. You will learn to time it right and you will set!

I'm pretty sure it holds for the same period of time no matter what the grade.

I've found that if you don't press down hard the holder will not engage. Which is great because I've driven manual for 7 years and I don't need any help not rolling back. I would prefer to remove the system given the chance. But I agree its convenient and will increase clutch life.

Awesome?

I've had Subies w/ hill holder before. I find the feature to be neat, but utterly useless.

What your dealer should know.....

No mention of the clutch pump twice tecnique, that's a myth.

What a useless feature. I don't understand why people have this irrational fear of rolling back in their cars. I roll back maybe an inch on extremely steep hills, and if for some reason I needed a feature like this, I could just use the e-brake.

But hey, if it gets more people driving manuals, I'm all for it.

rolling back a bit is normal.

there should be ample space between cars anyways, unless the a-hole behind likes to tailgate.

it may seem useless to most of you but I find it to be a reliever. its been a while since i owned a hb but now I can see the the car behind me better it usually feels like they're less then a foot from my rear bumper be it on flat road or high incline. more or less u'd think it would be the other way around but seems to be more people stopping too close then a somewhat reasonable safe distance.

It would be useless if I had to pay for it But since it's included in the base price I could careless if it's there or not. To go though the time or hassle of disabling it would be retarded

Well like i said there are many A-Holes here in NY who stop their damn SUV's right up on ur azz and I am not going to ding my 1st new car, plain and simple. So i like the system and for my girlfriend who will drive the car every once in a while I LOVE the feature cause shes not so great at the manual situation. Just was wondering cause it seemed kinda like "1 second" doesn't always mean "1 second" for the system.

I remember it was in my dad's '04 FXT. The harder you pressed on the brake when the car comes to a stop, the harder it held (for steeper hills). It wasn't a world beater type accessory, but it was kinda nice on those really steep inclines.

Yet another reason I won't buy an '08....didn't know they had added this "feature" to the Imprezas this year.

My mother's '03 Forester has this feature and I can't stand it, especially when backing up inclines (like her driveway) where it's natural to let the car roll slightly with the clutch in. The dealer was able to dial out some of this back in '04 (I don't know how) basically making the unit less sensitive so it only works on the steepest of hills. Still annoying though.

I just used the hand brake when I started driving manual and didn't want to drift back.

Yes that is how everyone learns, then after awhile you stop using the handbrake and use the slight roll to aid in momentum. Hill Assist prevents all of that. It removes the skill.

I'm not a huge fan, but I'll live w/ it. It had no barring on whether or not I'd buy the car. Not sure who would remove a car from their shopping list due to hill assist.

My old '93 wagon had it and I loved it. It really helped at some of the steeper lights.

PEOPLE THIS IS A NEW SYSTEM. It is not the same as the older systems.

Read understand how it works, it was posted above.

the incline start assist does not work facing down hill or on slight grades.

i rather have less people driving manuals.....some people simply can't drive an automatic...imagine a manual....

besides that i think its a pretty neat idea though i would never need it.

And i also enjoy rolling back when on a hill just to freak the person out behind me.....gives me a little chuckle on the inside, and them a close call and hopefully a lesson learned though i doubt it

That is incorrect. If you are facing downhill the system will engage and prevent you from rolling forward. I've done this.

Slight grades it can also hold. It depends on how much brake pedal pressure you give. If you push down hard it will engage, if light it wont.

So, what is the bottom line? Can this system be disabled without adverse affect? Eg disable the G-sensor or disconnect it from the HCU without affecting other hydralic systems connected to the HCU?

This system also comes in the MY08 2.5i's if you get the package that includes VDC. This being my first MT car, I didn't really notice what it was doing, since I had so many other things to learn (WAKE UP, left foot and right hand, you suckers have something to do now other than resting there and/or fiddling with the radio... the most important position of the clutch pedal is halfway in... don't forget to signal, etc..) I just found myself burning more clutch in the kinds of situations where it kicked in. I never use the handbrake for this (I gotta put a sticker on mine which reads "PARKING LEVER" ).

I mean, it's not like we're relying on this system to keep us out of trouble. It seems too inconsistent to rely on. If it had a more solid feel to it (and/or a defeat button or sensitivity dial [Don't want it to do its thing? Turn the sensitivity to infinity] ), I think people would be happier with it.

If someone tries to launch in second up a hill, this system still won't prevent them from stalling (assuming they don't have M4D CLU7CH SKI11Z, of course). And when the engine dies, the VDC dies too... This is from booklearning, of course... <_< >_> <_< Anyway, my point is that it really doesn't help the new MT driver that much. It's more of a placebo effect thing: The more confident you are that you won't slide back into that truck grille behind you, the smoother you will launch.

/////////////////
CN: MT n00b didn't notice it working, it isn't solid enough to rely on anyway, FHI, I can has another knob?

IBT "Incline Defeat Mod"... I'm guessing "Unscrew the sensor and duct-tape it pointing down"

Bonus pun: Placebo? Isn't that the thing that grows around a fetus in the womb?

I have it on my 08 XT and it was a PITA at first (made me stall cause i was used to rolling a bit), but now i am used to it. I dont even think about it, and when i get into other cars it doesnt effect my driving either.

i still roll foward in my 08 xt. The system is to prevent you from rolling backwards.
