So the lines should clear the I/C and turbo? Cool. I remember reading somewhere that new lines would have to be made for some reason.

Well I'm not sure of the difference in the lines between the US and JDM Imprezas, but I don't know why they would need to move. The bracket and compressor should be easy to mount...

A few pics from yesterday

With the radiator and fans out, there is plenty of room to avoid hitting the condenser

These wires will have to move to the former clutch cable hole.

Ej25(ej18) harness, to be slightly modded for ej20k

Also threaded the bottom hole in the transmission for the starter. Used a 12mm/1.25 pitch size but 13 or 14mm would have probably been better. Not sure if the threads are deep enough. Should be fine since the bolt is threaded to the end and I'm using one long enough to almost go through the transmission.

More pics today. Basically installed the new transmission and 94 legacy turbo crossmember and reinstalled the steering rack. Also routed turbo solenoid/ignition plate wires through firewall to ecu. Now I need to figure out what brackets to get for the swaybar, the crossmember didn't have any and they are different from my 95L.

05 RS transmission completely installed, waiting for its engine. I also cleaned the firewall wiring up and routed it away from the turbo area. Hopefully I can bend the a/c line enough to keep it working and not damage it. Louisiana is really humid most of the time.

I used ultra grey because I forgot to buy grommets. I'll peel the sealant off and install a grommet later.

This 2000 RS clutch tube doesn't quite line up with my 05 wrx m/c. Argghh

Had to slightly trim these holes..

..and this tab

Today I modifed the snorkus area for the wrx version. Also got about 90% of the ecu wiring done, just need to double check the cam, crank, and maf signal wires. All wires were soldered and I left extra length just in case.

what I started with... this doesn't look right

test fitting after first cut

blue magic rubber spray after smoothing the cuts

looks good to me

97 wrx on left, 95L on right

Wiring:

What I started with, ej18 and ej25d combined harness

chopped the ej25 harness out, hopefully I won't need to wire it back in

jumped the ej20k ignitor outputs to the ej18 ignitor inputs...

now the ej18 ignitor wires are jumped, input to output, input to output

This is when I was about 50% done, its more like 90% now. The white taped wires are extra egr/emission stuff and the power steering switch. I can always use them for accessories to avoid running extra wires.

Ok, about 99% of the wiring is done. Got the engine harness cleaned up and the ecu just needs the knock sensor wire ran. I'm going to use a shielded wire from the scrap harness, my L didn't have a knock sensor.

Might look messy but its almost there. You can see the extra emission stuff wires on the left with white tape and the yellow wire with tape on the ecu is the knock sensor lead. The bundle going straight up is from the boost / ignitor assembly.

These two wires had a plug on the end for the "ficd", a solenoid for emissions stuff on my L. One is switched ignition control device 12v+ and the other goes back to the ecu. I jumped them to feed 12v+ to the ecu area to run the boost/ignitor assembly.

The wire on the left comes from under the hood where I jumped the ficd wires and the wire on the right feeds power to the boost / ignitor assembly.

Alright... more pics. Today I fully assembled the longblock. The header and turbo are bolted on as well as the crossover pipe and coolant lines. I lost one of the copper washers (happens way too often) for the turbo oil feed so tomorrow I'll head into town on the scooter and find one. The timing belt is done and the covers are on but I still have to torque the cam gears and crank pulley properly so I put some tape reminders. Still have one bolt I forgot to bolt into a support that's under the turbo. Don't think I'll find an RS hood in time so it looks like the L hood will be getting cut and I'll just use the center RS vent from the set I bought. It will look lame but the intercooler needs air

oem sti metal gasket ftw

torquing head

first one done!

tape is cheap and keeps bad things out

here is a tiny scratch that I hope doesn't leak coolant (crosses fingers)

both heads done!

timing belt done!

lots of stuff bolted on! notice my tape reminders all over, don't want to forget anything

Used normal impreza, new normal impreza, and jdm wrx mounts. The wrx is wider than the other two, has more rubber. Also stiffer than the new ones in the center because of more area so I'll be re using those. The used oily ones that were on my engine were destroyed, seperated in several places.

the turbo back exhaust came today! I'm actually impressed with the build, hope it lines up correctly. I'll find out tomorrow

Well, the sleeper has awakened!! She runs great, now I just have a few things to do, should be done by Tuesday or Wednesday. I had a 31 cel and it turned out my extra map sensor was wired backwards so I chopped it and reversed the leads. After repairing:

Now I just have a few odds and ends that will take no time at all.

-waiting on cv shafts Monday
-going to grind the transmission xmember and diff cover monday so the huge exhaust doesn't rub
-need correct front antisway bar brackets
-neutral and reverse switches on the RS transmission are the opposite plugs as the L so I'll have to reverse them tomorrow or Monday (reverse lights come on in neutral, lol)

I'm so stoked!!!!!!!!!!!! The difficult parts are finally over

Here are some other pics of my progress over the last few days:

Actually ended up moving the a/c line under the dogbone for everything to clear. The tmic is greedy and needs a lot of room on bottom.

Waiting on photobucket for the others...

Checking over before the first start, its pretty snug under the I/C. You can see my throttle cable temporary rig job and the p/s lines just hangin out. I'll figure them out later, didn't have p/s anyway

Here's right after starting, its idling high because I hadn't swapped the second maps sensor's wires. The a/c idler pulley is pretty loud but it sounds louder in the video. I'm going swap its bearing asap.

Yes, a/c works

CEL 31, already taken care of, now it idles at 800 rpm

Welp.. got to drive the car into town to fill the tank and it drives great! Still have a couple of bugs, the neutral and reverse plugs are reversed. They plugged in just like the L transmission but apparently the plug on the sensor is reversed. I'll chop and swap them soon. People are going to be flipping out when my reverse lights kick on between shifts, lol. The wrx axles worked after knocking the abs rings off and the exhaust isn't hitting anything now. Going to need long muffler hangers though because the muffler hangers don't reach far enough over and the tip is hitting the bumper. I'll post vid when I get a chance, yay!

Default RS scoop installed

Yepp, sealing the valvecovers did the trick. No more leaks (only my disconnected ps lines, lol) Its still running great. I got the RS scoop done today. Looks good. Zip ties ftw lol!

Well, good news and bad news. Good news is the swaybar mounts came in today and they fit, so now I have a 20mm front. Bad news is... both valvecovers are still leaking a little. Not dripping constantly but just enough to hit the exhaust every now and then and that's just frickin ridiculous! Especially after the meticulous job I did sealing the valvecovers, maybe I shouldn't have used the crappy subaru sealant. Not only do I have to keep extra watch over oil level, I have to smell a hint of oil burning on the header pipe! Unbelievable I really don't feel like taking everything apart to do it yet again. I swear these engines must be designed to leak

ALSO, while at the muffler shop I noticed the star, never paid attention to it before:

Definately going to open it up when I get back from New Orleans, now I'm worried I've been driving this long with the wrong ratio. I did count the teeth and do the math, the ratio was also etched into the ring gear.
So apparently its an r160 and I can take the lsd out of the wrx diff I have and put it in, after swapping ring gears. The diff on my car came off a legacy at the salvage yard, I don't remember seeing anything special inside...

Rear section of xmember modded for exhaust to clear

They're going to make some brackets for support when I get the cat welded in.

If you were driving around with mismatched front and rear diff. ratios it would have blown your center differential within the first 1/4. If it was wrong you would know it.

I had drippy valve cover syndrome after I did my headgasket. What a pain to do with the engine in.

So it wouldn't have gone quietly then, lol? Would it take the center diff out and be obvious or just be in a serious bind?

Yeah, unfornately our engine design makes it a total pita to do easily. Yesterday I actually saw a small puff of smoke while sitting at a light. Gotta get this taken care of, its actually kind of embarassing. I would be dropping the diff to swap the lsd in now, but its time to go talk to my new manager. Hopefully I can get hit the ground running with my new job.

Well I've got new oem gaskets for the outer edge, maybe I got a bad aftermarket version. Today I finally let the car go to about 17psi, WOW just WOW. A friend was with me and I made it past the 500 mile point around 12:45. We were cruising around looking for meets but there weren't many people out. Its unreal how quickly it gets to 110... and kills the engine for a second because of the factory speed limiter. I never installed the SLD to eliminate that because I'll be using the PFC soon and am trying to sell the SpeedLimitDefenser.
I also noticed a few days ago that some of the imitation silicone hoses I have going between vaccum components are collapsing and deforming. I ordered some by the foot from a different seller and it was actually silicone. From now on if I need hose/tubing/etc it will come from Autosilicone. I made a small skit showing the difference between the imitation pvc stuff and genuine silicone hose. Notice how similar they look before the test. Feel free to laugh a little, I did after hearing myself
