I have been following this thread for a while because my built long block ticks but my tuner assures me it is noisy injectors. I double checked the lash on the heads because it has cams but everything is within spec, will contine to beat on it until it blows and let you know if tuner is correct, 5k miles on it so far and no problems.

I took it to a Subaru tech and had him listen and he told me to double check the valve lash on the cyl 2 exhaust valves

Here is what i have had in the past with subaru dealer ships installing the intake cam gears wrong. The came gear is not fully on the cam pin. So what ends up happening is, the cam gear cannot spin the cam all the way over causing a slapping sound. Take the cam gear off on that side and make sure its in the right spot.

^ If his cam wasn't rotating all the way, then he would be bending valves/ hearing all kinds of bad news.
Also I think he said earlier that he had re-assembled the motor, so i doubt improper cam gear assembly.
OP did you check rod bearings while the motor was out?
Its possible that when your wrist pin went out, it was putting added stress on the bearings.

Exactly. Rod bearings looked ok when I put it back together.

You would think that it would bend the valves but it doesn't. the cam never spins over allowing the valves to open. That is not rod knock. far from from it. Check your cam gear. it does not matter that he has taken it apart if the pin hole is messed up, it will allow the cam gear to slip. Put a scope on it and listen to where the noise is coming from.

This video is rod knock .

If the valves don't open then it runs on 2 cylinders which would be obvious immediately.

It's not that. This noise started after I already had well over 1500 miles on the block when I originally built it

Valve lash on the drivers side head is all in spec except cyl 4 intake valves which measured at .010-.011 where all the others were about .006-.008. Is this really enough to cause the noise I am hearing?

10 intake and 11 exhaust WILL cause lots of noise.

I guess I'll order a couple of thicker buckets and see what happens then..hopefully this will take care of it

The bigger the cam and the faster the ramp rates the more noise it will make.

So if I were to say that my valve lash wasn't the problem what would be the next thing to look into?

I'm wondering if I have a problem with a valve spring or retainer. There's just nothing else left to be bad lol

Seems like you'd notice a retainer issue though when you reassembled

I didn't pull the valves out though. Also have been reading tons of issues with weak Brian crower valve springs

Hmm good point. Maybe that's something you could try if/when you get back in there. Disassemble head and check everything. Maybe aspiring is weak or broken or retainer binding up

No cracked retainers, valve springs look ok. One weird thing however is on all of the exhaust valves the valve locks seemed to be stuck in the retainers and I had to hit the retainers fairly hard to get the locks to pop out. I'm about to just order all new springs and retainers and replace all of the buckets.

Make sure the heads are torqued to the block when you measure and adjust the valves. Otherwise they can be adjusted out of spec.

Check your AVCS values in RomRaider or whatever logger you use. If the values are off between left and right you could have an AVCS gear or solenoid issue.

Thanks for the idea, thought about that and checked them in my aem and they were fine. Also swapped solenoids between heads and nothing changed

I'm going to take the drivers side avcs gear apart tmr when I get to work and see if its possibly sludged up. I did have a bearing failure on my old engine and ended up reusing these cam gears without cleaning them
