I've been changing my own oil since day one with this car and I've been using Castrol Edge Titanium with whatever filter is included in the package when I buy it over at Advance Auto Parts. I am at 44,600 miles and my car has yet to consume any oil or have any issues. The Castrol oil changes go for about $32-35 for 5 quarts and the filter(usually FRAM Ultra, Bosch Distance Plus, or K&N) but I recently also picked up 10 quarts of Valvoline Synpower with two FRAM Ultra filters for $54.

I should also note that I recently noticed that the K&N filters that are coming on to the shelves are made in Korea instead of the USA. I don't know of anyone who has opened one up yet to see the difference but I am always wary when a company outsources their products to increase profits. You can tell the difference because Korean version is slightly smaller and the open end has a clear plastic cover on it.

I believe I've read elsewhere that K&N's quality isn't what it used to be. Perhaps others can confirm. I'd research this further on the Bob Is The Oil Guy site before I'd install a K&N filter on my car.

I don't doubt that one bit. I did quite a bit of research on the K&N filters before I started using them and they are essentially the same thing as the Mobil1 oil filter(made in the same factory and on the same line) but they are painted differently and have a nut welded to the top. All my research was done a few months ago before these Korean filters hit the market and people seemed to love the K&N filters(made in the USA).

My guess is that these Korean filters are made quite a bit cheaper. Overall they were smaller, lighter, and the sidewalls seemed thinner as I was able to squeeze the filter and see a deformation. I also looked through the opening and noticed that there were fewer holes and the holes were quite a bit smaller than in the US made filter. This may restrict oil flow causing the bypass valve to open prematurely.

I'll tell you what, if I didn't already have six of the black Subaru/Roki "160" filters on my garage shelf, I'd be all over this eBay auction like a fat kid on cake:

Actually, even for the BRZ a thick 30 grade like German Castrol or a 40 grade oil is not needed with stock internals.

For someone considering a thicker oil, you should first do a used oil analysis to determine if you need a thicker oil. Even if I had an Impreza that burned oil using 0W-20, I would switch to a 5W-20 before trying a 30 grade. 5W-20's are more stable and usually have better NOACK volatility ratings (less evaporation).

I don't see many BRZ uoa's but there are a lot of good ones on ft86club.com using 0W-20.

There is rumor that at least in some markets, some XV's have supposedly come filled with 5w20. I highly doubt it but thats what I've heard. I have my factory fill stored in clean containers, so i could send some off.
But I'm not that curious to spend money on finding out.

I wonder how a 5w would do at -20f, in theory it should pour easy enough, and amsoil 5-20 signature has a lot lower volatility than 0-20

No Mobil 1. Been buying PP 0w-20 since it's the only one I've seen on sale at the local Don Quijote. The Eneos stuff costs much more.

Even if you do a used oil analysis on a WRX factory fill, it comes back as a 20 grade and I suspect they use an extremely thin 30 grade or even a 20 grade at the factory. I know in some countries, they newer n/a Foresters allow 5W-30. In many cases, a 5W-30 and 5W-20 are made from the same base stock. The 5W-30 is just loaded with more viscosity modifiers to thicken it up which is why a 5W-20 can actually be more stable than a 5W-30 and many 5W-30's will shear to a 20 anyway.

Yes, a 0W-20 is thinner in extreme cold and will give you better fuel economy before the car is fully warmed up. So you're getting something like .25% better fuel economy for the first 5 minutes of operation. The cold cranking viscosity for a 0W is tested at -35C and a 5W is tested at -30C.

http://www.pqiamerica.com/coldcrank.htm

Of course, all 0W's aren't the same viscosity in sub-freezing temps you want one that is thinner on the MRV test at -40C. Looking through product data sheets is one way to find MRV.

http://www.swri.org/4org/d08/global/...vs/default.htm

http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...mpability.aspx

Of course, it can be tricky trying to compare oil specs since some companies list CCS and others list MRV.

http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lub...l_Economy.aspx

http://www.eneos.us/product/1

A viscosity graph can be helpful as well and you just enter the 40C and 100C Kinematic Viscosity. It's just less accurate below 0C but it gives you a good idea of actual viscosity.

Im sure any 0-w20 is fine with a regular oil change interval.
Kendall, that is a name I have not heard of in years. Back in the 60's and 70's that was THE oil, stuff was super slippery. You could take the entire oil line up at Vanidersteins speed shop, put them each in their own cup and using the three finger method find the kendall every time, stuff was slipperier than astroglide, you could probably use it for that in a pinch too.

Pretty easy to get if you make an online account and price is isn't much more than mobil 1 etc if you order a lot (multiple vehicles, multiple changes)

I used Amsoil OE for my first 3 oil changes, and the Used Oil Analysis I did looked very good. But when I saw on Bob Is The Oil Guy that the Pennzoil Platinum oil is also very well loved, and it can be purchased for less money at Walmart (at a huge discount if there's a sale/coupon), that's when I switched to Pennzoil.

So no complaints with Amsoil. But if I can buy another great product, for less money, while at Walmart buying Band-aids, then that's what I'm going to do.

If I can avoid Wal-Mart that's what I'm going to do ;-) it is just easier to order online and have it show up at my house twice a year. Plus the cost of amsoil "membership" isn't much per quart when you divide it between 60qts of oil per year

When I find something that works well I rarely change, plus I'm planning extended intervals once warranty is out

Do the BRZ guys using thicker oils see lower wear metals than those using 0W20?

Is the standard Subaru oil good for our cars or would we be upgrading with Mobil1 or something different? The reason I ask is because when I bought my car the dealer told me as long as i do my regular oil changes at their shop I would have lifetime warranty on my engine which is great since I plan to keep the car for a while... I am assuming the subaru oil they are using should not be too bad?

I always used royal purple for my bemmer, but when I was getting ready for my first oil change, I talked to the mechanic, and he told me it was a waste on the first couple of changes, because the engine is breaking in, he suggested just to get first few free, and than put the royal purple in.

To maintain your warranty you must be able to provide proof (receipts) that you followed the recommended oil change intervals specified in the owners manual.

If those receipts show any grade of oil other than 0W-20, that can be used, as could failure to provide evidence of the oil changes, to deny warranty work.

You might want to reconsider playing around with different weight oils until after your warranty expires.

Subaru "brand" motor oil is made by Mobile1. I have been useing NAPA 0W20 synthetic oil($3.29 a quart on sale ) which is made by Valvoline and I have had no oil consumption issues. In the past, I have used Mobile1 in Subaru's(turbo models) and had bearing issues.-- Just my personal 2 cents.

Every oil change, I bring my own oil to the dealership(they supply the "Roki" filter and crush ring) and they change it for me. It costs me less than $24 at the dealership and they have a record of my oil changes.

Sorry to argue, but "subaru 'brand' oil" is Idemitsu. Your dealer may stock Mobil1, but thats not the norm and is frowned upon because of the M1 stigma.
Bob is the oil guy says the stock Idemitsu is great stuff. I get free oil changes for life so my oil will lilely be the factory stuff unless I'm too far away to get to the dealer. So far my 3/13 build date XV hasnt burned any noticeable amount of oil since new. I did a thorough break in and also drained the factory fill at 200-300 miles. Its great not having to watch the dipstivk like a hawk.
