Part no. for K&N filter for Legacy GT?
I'm going to install one, and Pleiades mentioned opening up the ducting from the fender well, for a sort of cold air intake. Is this safe and all that jazz?
I know the K&N products well, because I had one in every car I've owned, and am fond of them. They sound cool without being as obnoxious as intakes I've heard. Might as well do this when I put on the Stromung, which finally arrived. I also heard Legacy GTs have the same K&N part no. as mid-90s Maximas? Kevin

Rather than duct tape why not use the stock plug that fits nicely and looks stock too. It is stock on the newer Imprezas but fits the Legacy. The plug number is:
Subaru PN 46059FA000 It fits in the hole that is left over after you remove the snorkus part that goes from the fender to just behind the light. Dale Teague or Sugar at Troncalli can get for you. Also I found that in our 97 Legacy this K&N panel filter fit very nicely too: 33-2031-1 You are right too this filter says it will fit a Maxima too. Thanks, everyone. Now all I have to do is find a local K&N dealer with good stock.

Subie Gal, I'm curious where those part numbers came from. The PNs I've seen are like what Peaty mentioned (33-20xx).
On my car I'm using a 33-2075. For some reason, the K&N application guide doesn't list anything for the '97-99 Legacy 2.5GT, but they do list the '97 Legacy Outback - it is supposed to use the 2075. I used the same part number in my '99 2.5GT, and now I have a 2075 in my '97 2.5GT - no problems whatsoever, fits into the filter box perfectly. Oh, and Peaty is exactly right about the little fender plug. I had one of those on the '99 car, too - yet another little item to add to the list of stuff to grab from the car when I finally get to the parts facility that has it now. Got it...on order, anyhow. It will be in tomorrow from a place called Speed Performance or something like that, on Irving Park Rd. I also got the K&N for my Intrepid from them, I just recalled. Good place, and fast.
I'll install both on the weekend, and report back on results. I'm most curious about the Stromung noise level as regards the wagon. Kevin |

I have 33-2075 filter on my 97 GT.
BTW, after I remove the fog lights from my car, I see that there is a black box behind the fog light (on passenger side), don't know if that's part of the intake system, if so, then I would like to drill a hole and feed air from the fog light openings. etam http://www.geocities.com/bo550/hella_subaru.JPG [This message has been edited by etam (edited December 28, 2000).] |

That black box is what I call the snorkus it is part of the intake system. I removed it from our legacy and put the plug in the fender where it came out to behind the headlamp. That and I replaced the panel filter with a K&N filter. This way you get the cold air from the fender. Taking the snorkus out (silencer really I guess) is easier with the Legacy than the Impreza I found. With the Legacy you can just drop the splash guard panel in front of the wheel and get it out w/ some finagling. On the Impreza you have to remove the wheel and whole liner.

etam - Just to add to what Peaty said, that is an intake silencer. Most production cars today have a silencer of some sort. If you take a closer look at your intake, you'll see that the actual air intake is that black banana-curved piece of plastic in the front passenger side corner of your engine bay (right above the ABS module). So the air is actually sucked in from the warm engine bay, then it down into the fender well and goes through the silencer, and then back up to the filter box.
Theoretically removing the silencer will give you a little bit of power - nothing you'll ever notice, probably not even on a dyno, definitely not by the seat o' the pants. However, you will definitely notice a more aggressive induction sound above about 3500rpm - gives the engine a bit more of a growl, quite nice really. I've also noticed on both my GTs that removing the silencer causes a resonance of some sort that you can hear at idle, both in and out of the car. It's low-to-medium frequency, higher pitch than a hum but not as high as a whine. Whatever . It's not too obtrusive, and it only is noticeable at idle. If you have the time, go ahead and remove the silencer rather than just drilling holes into it. It probably only takes 30min or so, it's just held in by 2 bolts. Once you have it removed, get the little plastic cover plate (part number listed in Peaty's original post) to cover over the hole that will now exist where that banana-curved piece of intake used to be. Once I put some data recorders under the hood of my RS and recorded the temp in 6 different locations and drove around. One of the spots was right by the air intake behind the headlamp. Another was in the fender by where the snorkus would be. It was a fair amount cooler in the fender. I put one where a cone filter would be for say a weapon R type too. That spot was also pretty hot compared to temp in the fender. Something interesting too was that the temp inside the box behind the TB was a few degrees higher than air at the intake origin. I think this is due to heat soak of the box itself. This is why I opened up the scoop on my RS to keep the box cool. I have to do the test again now that I have the vents and scoop open and see how much it changes the temps. I think the results would be similar on the Legacy. I've done this to other cars and the results are kind of the same. No big surprise, it's hot under the hood and cool in the fender. The XL file of the study w/pics of where the TC's were placed are on the AZScooby site. I forget what the formula is but for every so many °F increased there is a decrease in HP due to the amount of fuel the air can hold at a given temp. It gets super hot here in KS so that's why I was so interested in the temp stuff. We saw 114°F this year few times. We got the hottest spot in the nation 2 days in a row, bleck. Of course now we are freezing our patootie's off.
Sorry for the long post... Peaty |

AutoZone sells K&N part # 33-2075 for $41.95, it's listed for the 96-99 Outback and works just fine in my 98 Legacy GT Wagon.

(PS I know jack about car modification, so keep that in mind) |

It's basically the same as changing any air filter. Sometimes the K&N's are a little snug but it's not hard to do. I take off the piping coming to the filter just to make it easier. But that's just a few breeze clamps that you can remove w/ a screw driver

When we had our '97 OB. The first thing I did was to remove the "silencer" from the passenger fender and drop in a Amsoil Foam filter. About a year ago in the general forum there was a big debate Amsoil vs. K&N I think that from a flow and filtering stand point Amsoil won. (it is also less expensive) But both are a big step up compared to OEM paper media. In the next week I will drop another Amsoil filter in my MY '01 Leg. I loved mine and would definately recomend one.

Thats good... But I still need more information...
Like, does it improve performace at all? does it make gas mileage higher or lower? will it effect the sound of the car (IE will it still be quiet)? How do I EXACTLY install it? (IE diagrams and exacting procedure, or should I check the tech forum for this) [This message has been edited by Kostamojen (edited January 15, 2001).] |

I've had one in my '98 for about two weeks now, and it does improve performance, though in the interest of full disclosure, I had it put in at the same time as a Stromung.
It goes in just like the stock air filter, since it is a direct replacement. The sound is pretty cool, but barely detectable. It's the same sort of sound you'd make if you were to suck in your breath sharply and deeply through pursed lips, if that helps. It isn't loud at all, but you can hear it working, so to speak. It's nowhere near the banshee howl of an intake. Can't tell you much about gas mileage yet, since the car is still "figuring out" the Stromung and K&N. It's a bit lower right now, but I freely admit to having a heavy right foot, and a lot of 6K shifting action. Kevin [This message has been edited by gtguy (edited January 15, 2001).] |

As far as sound goes it is a different sound when you take of the silencer and replace the filter. But it is only noticable during WOT (wide open throttle) the times that you are cruising there is no dif. During WOT the sound is more throaty and does not sound like a weinny car.
As far as performance goes after replacing my filter and silencer and resetting the ECU on my trip to Ft. Knox KY from MN I averaged 28mgp (this was during the $2.00/gal for gas!) with speeds around 80+ and that was with alot of crap in the back end. Prior to that I was getting about 24ish with freeway driving. Tim. |
