Default 2017 Mercedes-AMG C43 Coupe Revealed

Quote:
Mercedes-AMG, the performance arm of Mercedes-Benz, today unveiled the 2017 C43 coupe ahead of its public debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show.

There is a little confusion surrounding this model, so let's clear it up. The C43 Coupe is basically the coupe version of the Mercedes-Benz C450 sedan, which itself is expected to be rebranded a Mercedes-AMG C43. Both share the same engine and most of their performance goodies, but the "43" represents the naming strategy for the less-powerful versions of proper AMG models moving forward. The higher-power models retain "63" in their names.

The C43's engine is a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 pumping out 362 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. It is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission and is capable of a 0-to-60 mph run of 4.6 seconds.

Both the coupe and sedan come with the AMG 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system, but the version in the C43 is newer and it has a 31 percent front, 69 percent rear torque bias while the C450 splits the the torque 33/67.

2017 Mercedes-AMG C43 coupe2017 Mercedes-AMG C43 coupe
AMG's adaptive Ride Control sport suspension, which is adopted from the more powerful C63 and has three damping modes, comes standard on the C43. The electronic stability control program has three modes as well. Compared to the C300, the C43 has more negative camber to provide neutral handling at the limit and has stiffer bushings front and rear. The front axle has also has new steering knuckles and load-bearing joints. The brakes are larger, too. The C43 has internally ventilated compound discs, 14.2 inches in diameter up front and 12.6 inches at the rear.

On the outside, the C43 Coupe sets itself apart with unique front and rear aprons, a silver-chrome front splitter, a diamond-pattern grille with chrome pins and gloss-black louvers, a rear apron with a matte iridium silver diffuser insert, and chrome tailpipes with a center divider.

Some of the trim is changed as well. You'll find black exterior mirror housings, as well as a gloss black waistline trim strip and gloss black window frames. An optional Night Package adds gloss black front apron trim, a gloss black diffuser-look insert at the rear, and black tailpipes.

The five-spoke 18-inch wheels are painted gloss black and they mount 225/45 front tires and 245/40 rear tires. Various 19-inch wheel designs are optional.

Inside, the C43 gets an AMG instrument cluster with a checkered flag design, a Race Meter, and a 180-mph speedometer. The flat-bottom sport steering wheel is trimmed in leather with red contrast stitching and is home to numerous controls. It matches the MB-Tex faux leather upholstery that features microfiber inserts on the sport seats.

The 2017 Mercedes-AMG C43 Coupe will go on sale this fall. Pricing hasn't been announced, but we expect it will run a few thousand dollars more than the C450 sedan, which starts around $52,000.

Guess they are renaming the C450 AMG then. Dealers probably didn't like the three-digit model confusing what is a "real" AMG and what isn't, or confusing customers that a higher number != better. So now the half-assed ones are full on AMGs. Figures.

Default 2017 Mercedes-AMG C43 4MATIC Coupe Review & Test Drive

Quote:
In the past couple of years, Mercedes-Benz has been hard at work to throw just about every vehicle segment offering on the wall to see what sticks. Covering virtually all major vehicle segments except the coveted pickup truck market, Mercedes-Benz has just about all bases covered. With the introduction of a new AMG model to fill a gap between the high-performance C63 Coupe and the new C-Class luxury sports coupe, Mercedes-AMG is poised to leave no stones uncovered. For the 2017 model year, AMG gives the masses exactly what they want and meet them at their desired price point for stepping into true modern-day luxury performance on four wheels.

In comes the new Mercedes-AMG C43 Coupe (previously the AMG C450), a vehicle that brings a proven BiTurbo V6 engine pumping out 362 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels by way of the brand’s 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. Before power is diverted to the advanced all-wheel-drive system, the C43 gets a new 9-speed automatic transmission to power the wheels with lighting fast shifts that nearly rival dual clutch units in late-model supercars. To my delight, the C43 Coupe manages to fire off snappy shifts in its Sport+ drive mode with an intoxicating clatter sound emitting through the luxury-laced cabin making it to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds.

In my opinion, Mercedes-AMG has tamed a juvenile beast that begs to run beside its more powerful brethren found in the 503-horsepower BiTurbo V8 C63 S Coupe, which, in an overall assessment, has a much more high-strung character mostly reserved for hardcore enthusiast. When it comes to the C43 Coupe, things get a bit lost in translation for the enthusiast crowd where the C43 is more subdued, more of a cruising destroyer than a laser guided weapon armed with a potent warhead. To the twin-turbo V6 engine’s benefit, there isn’t any noticeable turbo lag while the power band is full of power up to redline. The fight that the C43 brings is more of a twelve rounder that could go either way when pitted with an equal partner, a softer approach to still be entertaining but not keep everyone out of their seat awaiting a bloodbath.

The Mercedes-AMG C43 is surprisingly efficient in everyday driving for its performance level, somewhat thanks to its quick and assured-shifting 9-speed automatic transmission. I was able to get just over 30 mpg on the highway and returned a respectable 23.9 around town. The EPA estimates for the new C43 fall somewhat in line with my results at 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway for my 4MATIC all-wheel-drive test vehicle. The rear-wheel-drive model gets one additional mpg on the highway compared to the 4MATIC model

To summarize the placement of the new C43 Coupe, the AMG outfit has done a remarkable job to put the new Benz Coupe in a place that puts luxury slightly above the requirement for shear performance. It’s not to say that the C43 is a slouch in any way, it’s more of a relaxed vehicle that its adaptive suspension system fails to keep in a firm position even in the firmest Sport + setting for the adaptive dampers. The tail end still tends to flop around a bit more for my taste and the overall dynamic of the ride quality balancing out the sporty side fails to impress when compared to its bad ass C63 S Coupe sibling. In all, the C43 Coupe’s chassis is capable but doesn’t have the chops to get down and dirty to put a smile on your face like a BMW 440i Coupe with the M Sport and Track Handling Package goodies or a new Audi S5, in my opinion.

Where the new 2017 Mercedes-AMG C43 Coupe possibly outshines its competition is the classy styling and available luxury appointments that nearly mimic the feel and look of a new S-Class. The exterior is hard to discern for many onlookers in that they may assume you are driving the cream of the crop out of the AMG outfit for the smallish C-Class. Lacking the boldly flared fenders of the C63 S Coupe, the C43 Coupe makes due with classiness in styling that looks more menacing than its well-to-do BiTurbo V6 engine. There is a high level of premium quality and perception in the C43 Coupe inside and out. The cabin is lavish enough to keep S-Class drivers happy, and at the same time, keep you somewhat entertained at the sound of the BiTurbo V6’s growl and pop-pops out of the dual-stage exhaust system when in Sport + mode.

The uncompromised quality of the interior keeps the C43 Coupe in an upper echelon to run with the big dogs regarding fit and finish and overall luxury appeal. The onslaught of available features and amenities also make the C43 Coupe a desirable vehicle for those who enjoy the finer things in life. However, with the starting price of just $55,500 for the new Mercedes-AMG C43 Coupe, there isn’t much content to keep many luxury buyers satisfied when compared to other vehicles in the same segment. Loading up the C43 makes the complete package attractive for new luxury vehicle seekers but it all comes at a much higher price once expensive option packages are added to the equation.

The dashboard is full of soft-touch surfaces, decent amounts of aluminum trim, and textured wood encompassing the center stack of the dashboard and below the floating infotainment screen. Most of the controls are conveniently placed and mostly mimic higher-class vehicles, such as the infamous S-Class. The level of attention to detail and classic proportions of conventional vehicle traits keep the C43 Coupe a level above the competition concerning its interior. The sporty front seats are also a plus in keeping with the tradition of comfort with multiple personalities that have bolster supports in the right places but a soft and supple quality to keep you comfy on long trips.

The new Mercedes-AMG C43 is an excellent compromise and value for those who don’t wish to spend the price of admission for a new C63 Coupe but still want a taste of the true AMG flavor. My nicely equipped (19-inch AMG black-accented wheels with summer performance tires, color heads-up display, night package, parking assist package w/360-degree camera system, AMG exterior carbon fiber package, AMG Performance Steering wheel, AMG Performance exhaust system, Premium 2 Package w/COMAND voice navigation, 8.4-inch infotainment screen, power trunk lid) but far from loaded C43 AMG test vehicle comes in a price of $66,945, including a $925 destination and delivery charge.

It a nice car the red seat belts in the rear aren't for me. But here is the problem for me. It's 55k STARTING but we all know that's not what your going to find at the dealer try 70k. When you buy it Do you wish you had C63 every time you punch it. Then you have the competition S4/S5 loaded up for 60k. Hell A new TLX V6 A Spec might be just fun if not more for Hell of a lot less, but you won't have AMG on the trunk.

Actually got to drive the sedan C43 recently (business partner got it as a loaner while his Benz was in the shop), it's a pretty awesome car. The one I drove had the red seat belts and I rather loved them. I do agree it's pretty steep for the money, I'd sooner have a CLA45 I think in MB's catalog, or the aforementioned Red Sport. But I did like it; lots of touches to make the car feel special, and the power was good enough to have fun without being scary or 0-JAIL in 4 seconds. It would make a great CPO car after someone else already took a dunk on it.

I just got the sedan as a daily driver. Really enjoy it. It's a good daily driver, and I can still have a little fun with it. AMR has a flash that adds over 100hp and runs I think a 12.1 or 12.2.

As ricey as it is, I really want this exhaust, makes it sound like a GT-R.

A facelift for Mercedes-AMG's entry-level C-Class Coupé fails to see it keep pace with the all-conquering BMW M2 Competition

Quote:
What is it?
This is our first taste on UK roads of Mercedes-AMG's entry-level take on the revised C-Class Coupe. As before, the Mercedes-AMG C43 Coupe bridges the gap between the already pretty sporty standard C-Class Coupe range to the far ballsier and more extreme C63 AMG Coupe as part of the tiering of AMG models in any given range to broaden the choice for buyers.

You won't mistake a C43 for a C63 visually, for the former does without the latter's aggressively-flared rear wheel arches as the most obvious visual differentiation between them. The C43 instead relies on its donor car's pretty, sleek lines to give it a different kind of purpose, with its biggest dose of sportiness coming from the quad exhausts.

Nor will you if you open the bonnet, where you will find a V6 instead of the range-topper's V8. This isn't any old V6, however, as it has some serious performance credentials of its own. The twin-turbo 3.0-litre unit produces 385bhp (up by 23bhp) and 383lb ft, driving all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic gearbox.

What's it like?
The C43 is one of the best examples of just how diverse the AMG brand has become. The model lacks the raucousness of the 63-badged AMG models, and feels far more like a potent grand tourer than a compact sports car. To that end, at times it feels like it has more in common than the C-Class coupe models immediately below it in range than the full-fat C63 AMG above it.

Take the ride quality. The ride is one of extreme sophistication, and for the most part makes this a very comfortable car indeed. While cycling through the various Comfort and Sport modes the firmness and response increases, that high-quality ride devoid of disturbance from whatever the road surface beneath it remains. It's really very comfortable, which is not really the thing you expect to be most impressed by on any AMG model.

The trade off with that brilliant ride is handling that's not as involving as you'd want it to be. There's plenty of grip, body control is excellent, and it's very stable and predictable at speeds, but this is not a car that really involves you in the process. It's all a bit by the numbers; a car to impress the head while keeping the heart beating at a steady pace.

That grand tourer feel spreads to the drivetrain, too. Straight-line pace is the C43's forte rather than the kind of howling, barking adjustability afforded by the V8-engined C63. It's actually more sensible feeling than the numbers suggest, too, and it isn't as confidence inspiring car to drive quickly as it should be, both things that can be traced to the lack of intuitiveness of the nine-speed automatic gearbox.

The rest of the package is all very grand tourer, too - and here it's most welcome. The seats are comfortable and supportive, the cabin layout intuitive and dripping with perceived quality, while the digital screens are big and bold, and rich in their presentation. Inside and out, this is one of the best-looking cars Mercedes-Benz makes.

Should I buy one?

Solid if slightly unspectacular, the C43 Coupe isn't the sweetest AMG in its range. It could get away with that in other sectors it makes cars in (and that's quite a lot these days), yet the C43 Coupe competes against probably the best car its biggest rival BMW M currently makes, the M2 Competition.

The M2 Competition is one of those cars that comes along every now and then that makes you reappraise everything else that lines up alongside it. That's bad news here for Mercedes-AMG, whose own C43 loses far more on the dynamic front to Munich than it gains with the comfort, quality and cross-country pace it trumps the BMW on.

This car just doesn't look good as a coupe but I think it looks wonderful as a sedan. The M2 looks like it was designed to be a coupe, not a sedan who simply had 2 doors removed.
