Same shot in black and white. I was playing around in Lightroom and liked how the headlights and grill stood out. Which do you prefer?
I like the composition quite a bit, but it could use a little tiny bit more exposure. The black and white is a bit too dark for me, especially since the tones all kinda match and the car doesn't stand out much from the surroundings. It'd be good if you raise the exposure on this one as well.

Getting back into photography. Just bought a battery grip, circular polarizer, hoods/lens and a tripod! Loving this thread and all the feedback people are getting.

Exposures look good for the time of day, but they're all missing some punch. I'd add a little bit more blacks and a little more saturation to make the colors pop more.

Yeah pretty bad...also in need of editing those out before posting.

That's what I get for doing post while tired. Image fixed.

ok, thanks. I kept everything mild because i was remembering something you said to somebody about shadow detail and now everytime i look at some of my older pics i now realize that they are all so underexposed, so thanks again, love this thread.

Is this too much punch?

Nice shot! I think it needs is a polarized windshield...but it's nice and sharp (although maybe a tad oversharpened thanks to Flickr) with good composition. The vignetting could probably be a turned down a tad too.

Yeah, a little too much punch with the color saturation for all of these photos, particularly on the reds and yellows/oranges. It's easy to just turn up the saturation...the key to getting to seem right is to make sure you're not losing details in the lines and such. The blue and red on your WRX in particular look like they're almost glowing...that's when you know you've turned it up too much. You're on the right track though!

I too would probably start with the D5100, but the D3100 is still more than capable of capturing good photos. If you're just starting out and you're not sure how deep you want to go with things, there's really nothing wrong with a D3100. If you have the budget for the D5100, I would probably go that direction...but the D3100 isn't crap by any means.

I wouldn't say the 18-55mm is garbage either. I think it's important for the overall learning process to start with equipment that isn't the absolute best. If you can learn to take good photos with your gear being the limiting factor, that just trains you to take even more awesome photos once you upgrade your gear. On the other hand, if you just go straight for the best equipment from the start, you won't have a full appreciation or understanding of why that gear is so good.

You can't compare a zoom lens to a prime lens if you're trying to decide on "what's a better lens." They're two very different animals, and if you're going to make a comparison, you should be comparing apples to apples. Prime lenses by in large are almost ALWAYS going to be sharper than a zoom lens, but does that mean that it's a better lens? In some ways yes, in some other ways no. Will it be sharper? Maybe...it really depends on what lens settings you use. Your 35mm ƒ1.8 set to ƒ1.8 is not going to be sharper than an 18-55mm set to ƒ8 for almost all intents and purposes. You have more freedom of movement and composition with a zoom lens, whereas with your 35mm you have a set focal length that could create some challenging compositional issues. For someone who's just starting out, having a prime lens is very important, but having it be your only lens is very limiting if you're really trying to learn a camera.

A proper comparison would be comparing the kit 18-55mm ƒ3.5-5.6 to the Nikon 17-55mm ƒ2.8, for the sheer fact that they're about the same focal lengths, they're both zoom lenses, and they're both DX lenses on top of all that. Yes, the 17-55 will blow the 18-55 away in just about every way, but it's also over $1500. I would not recommend someone who's never used a DSLR before to start out with that lens by any means.

Even still, the photos you posted don't really show much of a comparison...the 18-55mm looks like it did a great job in that photo, and your photo using the 35mm is completely different, so no real comparison can be made between the two.

This might just be me being "that guy" but you probably shouldn't watermark your images with "photography" if you are just learning and starting out shooting. I have been playing with cameras for years and I don't even feel like my images have the right to bear a photography watermark.

Save that for the pros...

I agree; however, I have found some pictures of my car that I took on different websites all over (We know its not because I am an epic photographer). It pissed me off that pictures are so easily "borrowed" for others to use for anything. I started putting my name on them as a watermark if the picture was good enough that it might be shared... I use the term "good" very loosely.

I say put your effort in your pictures, but protect your property.

I'm not arguing that you shouldn't watermark your pictures with your name...just using photography in it like you are a pro is a stretch. It is almost as if some people (not saying you specifically...just in general) think they can call themselves a photographer or have a branded photography name on their pictures just because they have a fancy camera.

I know guys that can take iPhone pictures much better than anything I have ever taken.

I understand and agree, my apologies.

I tell people that I am Armin, just so I can get free drinks at the VFW (Sometimes I don't have to bring a camera).
