Haven't checked, but surely all of the "It's the eye of god! See how great god is!" idiots and the "That's cgi, fake...just like the moon landing! It's a conspiracy!" people are already out in droves.
But yeah, that's the most awesome discovery in years. I wasn't even sure how to react when they announced it today. |

Black holes themselves are infinitely small. The event horizon isn't a physical structure either it's just the point from which light can't escape so you can't see anything past that point. The event horizon of supermassive black holes are big because they weigh in at billions of solar masses. The event horizon is roughly 1/3 the size of the dark central area. So if the shadow is 25 billion miles across the event horizon is about 8 billion miles across.
