I am convinced these need a restrictor. A .065" wasn't enough for mine, so I am going to try a .035" this week. At this point, I'd rather they had not put a "built-in" restrictor.

After talking with Geoff, he suggested my crankcase pressures/AOS/etc may be to blame, but I never had this issue with this exact same setup with a 20G.

Where are you guys buying your oil restrictors from? Link(website) of the actual restrictors? I need to get one for my 7670. I bought a spare one thinking it's blown but it's still going strong minus the oiling issue.

I also tried the .065 restrictor but on my 7163 to no avail.. oil is getting past the compressor and exhaust side. I threw a .035 restrictor on it today but haven't driven it yet.

did a small test today.

removed my .065 restrictor, hooked up my mechanical oil pressure gauge right at where the turbo oil feed is. So just like borg warner says to run.

built STi. Mobil 1 15w50. For reference, front port oil pressure is 95 psi cold. 35 psi warm idle.

I am going to test with a .065 restrictor next. just need to extend my 4AN oil feed a bit.

My friend had a turbo brz on his dyno recently for a tune and it smoked like crazy, had a bw efr, oem restrictor, and a dual catch can setup.
Unplugged the cans and the smoke went away, didn't really investigate the reasons but as noted above, ensure that you don't have crankcase pressure pushing the oil through.

This is my AOS intake source... Works great, to the point it leaned out my AFR by .6 and had to adjust the MAF.

My first setup, I had the hose Y'd to two ports on the turbo inlet, just to keep up the volume, but it was a mess. When I did the new turbo setup, I tried to clean it up and use one hose, but that required me to reduce the 5/8" hose to something smaller to fit on the inlet. I don't think this kept up as I had some oil seeping out of the cartridge of the turbo. I could also never feel any vacuum on the hose when I disconnected it while the car was running (didn't even change how the car ran with that vacuum leak).

That said, I took my intake off and had a buddy weld up a port in it to not only keep the size of the hose consistent, but actually create some vacuum on the AOS itself. I need to finish taking the powder coat off and repaint it, but here's what I got.





Design is similar to what you would find in a PCV exhaust dump setup (I also did this on my S2000... I should test the flow on it too).



I was curious on how well it would draw some flow from the port, so I blew into the intake and put my finger in the port, and with it wet, I could feel air being pulled in at just the low flow of my breath. I took it a step further and used my air compressor to test...

I'll be interested in the .035 restrictor results. I'm not sure I'm having the same problem, but it's an easy place to start. Getting intermittent puffs of smoke on start up. Some days its non-existent. Other days its a big ol' cloud of smoke for a couple of seconds. Clears up real quick, and i've never seen so much as a hint of smoke while driving. Fingers crossed its something simple, otherwise I'll have to start looking at deeper issues, which I don't want to see at 9k miles on my build!

Guess I should add my hat to the Colorado EFR ring. 07 LGT with 6758/.84 v-band on a built block, Killer B header, full race down pipe, STI 6 speed, flex fuel, id1300's, etc etc etc. 396whp/401tq @24psi on a low reading Mustang dyno. I'd really like to get the dual port wastegate actuator on there and see if we could hold a little better up top, I think there's a little bit of power left on the table. Regardless, it's a blast to drive and there's tons of power for my daily!

I generally find puffs of smoke on startup to be an overfill. I had that and then starting putting less oil in it and it went away. Otherwise, I'd look at valve seals. It's not really hot enough at the turbo to puff smoke at startup.

A dual port wastegate is a must. I had to have one guy here, on an EWG utilize his second port to hold boost on a 7163.

I will install my new restrictor tomorrow. Waiting on new seals for my wing that I took off for detailing before I drive.

Valve seals is what I'm afraid of...Don't relish the idea of tearing things apart this soon, but may be headed that way. Had the heads gone over at Heads by Drew out in Aurora, valves/springs/guides/seals all new. Would be disappointing, but things can certainly happen.

I've got the Killer B oil pan/baffle/pick up installed, usually takes a 5L jug and a splash of the last jug to fill up. Maybe I'll try to center the level next time as opposed to the full mark. Uses very little oil between (admittedly short) oil change intervals, barely a quarter quart at 1500 miles.

I let my car sit for months at a time. If I check the oil after sitting, it's like 2 quarts over full. Food for thought...

Checking oil is a funny thing, I'm sure if you let it sit you will find a lot will eventually find the pan.

I work in the marine industry and its funny because some outboard engines want you to fill them, then trimming the all the way up, leaving it OVERNIGHT and then trim it down and check level. Who the bloodyhell is actually going to be willing to do that when they check their oil? Lol
