^^^ Cool, thanks!

In the cold weather I've been getting a bit of squealing, primarily right after starting the engine (for a few seconds), but when it's been really cold, the squealing has continued for a bit (more like a chirp-chirp-chirp rather than continuous squealing) until the engine warms up. Thought it was an A/C idler pulley bearing, swapped that out recently with no change.

The other day I determined the noise was from the PS pump. Today I took the belt off and checked the pump over. Couldn't feel any play in the shaft either radially or axially. However, when I spun it, I could see the pulley has some runout; either the pulley is warped or the shaft of the pump is tweaked a bit. I couldn't break the pulley mounting nut loose to take the pulley off, so I'll have to reattack that another day.

Default What did you really do to your car today? V3.1

Drove around and worked on my speed density tune for my ‘01 L coupe a little bit today. Just some small tweaks to VE and more testing for my rotated Borg Warner s257sxe set up. (Red car below)

Also drove my ej205 swapped ‘98 L sedan for the first time in months today. Topped off coolant, tightened some hoses and bolts, some other stuff, then did some laps around the area. Just needs like one more thing before I can start to daily it again, hopefully. (White car below)

Didn't actually do any work on the car, but hit Crazy Ray's to grab some parts. Actually, went to the Mount Airy one last weekend and grabbed a PS pump off a '97 OBS. Got it home and realized it wasn't exactly the same as my (presumably stock, but I don't really know) '96 pump (see here - https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/sho....php?t=2895198). A little parts comparing online determined that the '95/96 Imprezas used a different pump and hard lines than the '97+. Bummer.

So today I hit the Jessup Crazy Ray's and grabbed the hard lines off a '97 coupe so I can swap those over to match the "new" pump. Also grabbed some cam sprockets off an EJ25D to sell to Outfront Motorsports. As I was pulling the cam sprockets off the engine I realized I had forgotten to bring a bag to carry the parts I was gathering. I found a car with an airbag hanging from the steering wheel, cut that away, and had myself a parts bag.

Heck, I might even keep it. Good, tough fabric, so I can put just about anything in it and not worry about the parts cutting through.

Looked pretty good. I was bummed that it's black, otherwise I would've been grabbing the trunk lid and the doors (since mine are all beat up one way or another). I didn't look much at the interior. Trunk release didn't work. Someone had tried to pull the rear lower seat cushion (without unbolting it ) so both ends were pulled up. Presumably they were trying to get into the trunk (people seem to love to get jacks out of cars as soon as they hit the yard). It's got the tan-ish interior, so I didn't really look at the panels to see what shape they're in.

Today I rotated the tires on the Impreza. Winter setup has been on about 4k miles, so they weren't quite due, but I've developed a bit of a vibration in the past week or two and wanted to take a look at them all. Initially thought maybe it was snow/ice stuck inside a wheel when we had the really cold days, but after the weather warmed up the vibration didn't go away. Didn't find any obvious issues (like a clean spot where a wheel weight used to be, a bubble in an inner sidewall, whatever). Just went out for a quick spin and the vibration is still there, didn't really change at all, so I'm not sure what to think. I'll have to hit the auto hobby shop on base to get it up on a lift and take a look at the axles and driveshaft to see if I spot anything there.

Fit check this not-so-lightweight crash beam I made. It also serves as a tow strap mount, and soon to be attachment points for the front splitter. 7lbs off the OEM crash beam.

Cleaned MAF, cleaned and oiled air filter, replaced a wideband o2 sensor that looks like it got dragged under the car for 100+ miles, removed a secondary airpump that was bouncing around freely in the engine bay, and spent the rest of the day trying to track down a replacement o ring for the stock intercooler.

So today I hit the Jessup Crazy Ray's and grabbed the hard lines off a '97 coupe so I can swap those over to match the "new" pump.
Last Friday I got out of work early and headed to the auto hobby shop on Ft. Myer to swap out the PS pump and hard lines. No real issues swapping things over. Changed out the fluid and purged the system using the same technique I've used multiple times in the past - an electric drill to drive the pump, return hose routed to a bottle. Normally it works like a charm, but apparently this time it didn't.

Started the car and could hear the pump immediately. Big time groaning and whining when I turned the wheel. At that point I assumed I had lucked out and picked a junkyard pump that was in worse shape than the pump I was replacing.

Based on that assumption, Saturday I picked up a NAPA reman pump. Sunday morning I headed back to the hobby shop to swap out the pump again. The reman pump didn't include the reservoir, so I swapped that over. Put the new pump in the car and found that the pulley didn't want to seat properly. Taking a look at the pump shafts it appeared the splines were shaped somewhat differently, and the shaft of the new pump had a larger diameter behind the splines. At that point I was stuck, so I threw the junkyard pump back on. Bled/purged it a little bit, but not nearly as well as I had the first time I installed the pump on Friday.

Well, apparently not trying to purge any air out was the right method, because the junkyard pump now doesn't make a peep and delivers assist at all times with no issues. Have to go back to NAPA and return the pump; hopefully they won't give me too much trouble.

I just changed the HP line over to a braided one yesterday. My pump now sounds like a whale Please wave your magic wand over here.

Fresh rubber. Amazing what a difference it makes. Better noise control and a bit softer.

Looking to sell my 2005 Legacy GT Limited turbo soon! So, my work this weekend is mostly going to be washing / waxing the car, detailing the interior, etc. It's been a good run since picking it up in 2008.

If anyone's interested I'll be posting it for sale in the classifieds section for the DC/NoVA area. Only ~ 75k miles on it!

Finally got some spanner wrenches and raised the rear of my bugeye wagon that was sagging. On a side note, I’ve been patiently waiting to get my “ultimate” build tuned. I think this week might be it! At least I am now fully proficient at driving my new dogbox in traffic. Looking forward to clutchless shifting once off of the break in tune.

I stared longingly at the empty spot in my engine bay then cried to myself in the shower while in the fetal position. One day my Subie will have a heart again...

Today it was less what I did to the car, and more what I did around the car. In order to be able to access the passenger front door of my in-the-midst-of-a-5-1/2-year-engine-swap Legacy, I needed to move a work bench out of the way. My garage is a bit, uhhh, cluttered, so that took some work.

Before:

After:

Note the open passenger front door, something that was impossible before. A little while later I popped the door card off that door, then used a couple jumpers to apply power to the window to lower it all the way.

With that done, I can now (hypothetically) get to work on installing the main wiring harness (merged by iWire last year), reinstalling the dash, etc etc. Maybe some day the car will run again!

- In unrelated news, rolled 223,000 miles on the beater Impreza.

Ordered a GS TMIC for the car. Should be to the house by 4/1. Now need to get a cat-back and re-do my tune once those are on.

Got the car finally tuned by John Kerr. The man is a genius. Super helpful. He didn’t give up until issues were sorted out.
