Default Thermo-tec Hi-Heat Coating (spray) - when used on lava/basalt header wrap!

To finish off a clean and well-protected Exhaust Insulating Wrap application it is recommended to use the Hi-Heat Coating.

The coating will protect the wrap from abrasion and harmful liquid spills. Extra resins and binders toughen the surface, extend the life of wrap by protecting it from friction, and seals the pores to minimize the penetration of harmful liquids. Hi-Heat Coating can handle direct and continuous heat of 2000 degrees Fahrenheit when used with ThermoTec Exhaust Insulating Products.

The coating also works excellent as a paint directly on metal surfaces and can handle continuous temperatures up to 1200 degrees Fahrenheit.
So, in a question to Thermo-Tec customer service about use of said spray and lava wraps in general, they basically say "hmm, don't know. You try it and tell us how it goes!" So, they send a free can of the silver (12002) heat spray/paint. Then, "hey, try out our new lava wrap!" How can I refuse? Free stickers seal the deal...

Now, I'd already wrapped the iron headers and GS cross pipe with DEI lava wrap, and the Up pipe with PTP (just cause it was available sooner and WTF not?) lava wrap. Wanting to get some data on how/if any wrap took the paint differently, I unwrapped 1/2 of the X-pipe's DEI and replaced it with the Thermo-Tec (hereafter: TT). This way, I'd be able to see if the stretched wrap on the pipe made any difference in how the spray applied.

Also, being a super-dork I took a small segment of each brand wrap I had left over and just applied the spray to each sample on a cardboard backer.

All the wraps took the silver coating easily and looked good afterwards. I put on two light coats each with a moment in between coats to let it tack over. It dried VERY quickly (~70F ambient, breezy and low humidity).

On the wrapped pipes, the spray went on very easily and coverage was good - almost went on like plasti-dip vids I've seen. It even adhered well to unprepped portions of the UP flanges; could not care less if that part flakes off. Again, dried to the touch in minutes.

All 3 wrap brands took the spray well and it looks awesome. I am a function>form guy, so having a "carbon fiber" look on my exhaust bits means squat. I'd rather have my thermal wrap sealed from the elements AND coated in shiny silver that will radiate far less infrared energy into my eng bay. It should also trap hot air underneath it, too, reducing convective heating.

TL;DR: Spray goes on easily, looks great and simply cannot hurt at this price point (Amazon: ~$15 shipped). I am sure that I will be able to do 2-3 coats of my OEM ported/wrapped headers with this same can of Spray. And will wrap/spray the top part of my DP when install time comes. Interior of OEM turbo heat shield, too...ends of TMIC tanks... the mind boggles.

- Quick note on the use of the three lava wraps -

You can see in the close up pics here that the weave of the wraps are distinctly different. The DEI has a diagonal element to it, and this makes it more flexible when going around complex pipe bends. It went on the OEM headers very easily, overall. The PTP went on the mostly straight UP pretty easily; I would not choose the PTP for complex shapes. Likewise, the TT is VERY stiff; like, a short segment will hold itself up horizontally stiff. It *feels* thicker too. This made putting it on even the very gentle curve of the XP a bit of a pain. If I'd got the TT first for the OEM collectors, I'd still be doing it. I'm sure it's great for bike/V8 headers and such that are dead straight.
