Stock 05 low power under load, poor mpg's
Hello, I'm new to the forum but have owned several wrx's.
Car: Stock 2005 wrx, 60k miles Problem: Low power, also getting poor fuel economy. When I go to wot from normal driving engine noise becomes very deep and low sounding and the car responds very sluggishly. Also, I am not sure this is related but there is an ticking noise coming from the engine bay that becomes louder when the clutch is released, it is constant during normal driving. No cels have came on. Checked so far: replaced plugs, air filter. Compression test. I also took it to the dealership, they said the mechanic did not find anything. I've had the car for about 3 months and it is still covered by warranty (just). Any thoughts that you have would be appreciated.

I feel like I need more information to give any feedback that might help you.
When you say you go wot from normal driving, is that crusing at 40mph in 4th gear and you punch it ? or 40mph in 3rd ? We need to know what mph and what gear your in to give any feedback here. What were the results of your compression test ? Get a boost leak test done, or do one yourself if you have access to an air compressor and have some spare change to make a tester. And to address the ticking noise, I have the same symptom at idle. When I press my clutch pedal at a stop light the ticking noise gets quieter. I did my own clutch job with an ebay exedy organic material clutch but it hasn't effected my performance at all, and my clutch holds power just like it should. |

I guess a better description of the problem would be, under rapid increase of the throttle the symptoms occur. So to answer your question, it would occur in both cases. The compression ranged from 138 - 145psi. I have checked the boost at wot and it seems to be steady at around 15psi. I will run a boost leak test this weekend just to check. Thanks for the advice.

buy a wideband so you know your afr's. its the first thing every subaru owner should buy. no excuses. that way you can get it tuned if needed plus monitor if your running rich as hell or lean/

Check all connections around your intercooler to the throttle body.

Sounds like u need to downshift... If u punch it at 40 in 4th... It's not gonna get up n go my friend and at the same speed in 3rd it might start to pick up but not a rapid pull

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I will try them out this weekend and let you know how it turns out. As far as the downshifting comment, not very helpful, if you read the previous reply you would see that the poor pick up occurs at any rpm range, and is only dependent on the change in throttle position.

My first guess would also be a minor boost leak.

i have had this problem before it could be lots of things. in my case it was loose spark plugs, engine sounded deeper, low throttle response loss of power and gas milage.

I'll bet money it is a clogged catalytic converter. If you can ease it up the throttle with no issues, but not rapidly, that is a dead giveaway.

I was able to do a boost leak test yesterday and on the first attempt the black and tan valve running from the intake to the EGR made a loud buzzing noise. After I plugged that line the system held 10 psi for quite a while before I released the pressure. However, I did notice some oil on the inlet tube on the cold side of the turbo. I pulled off the intercooler and found standing oil in the portion of intake running from the outlet of the cold side to the intercooler. Im not sure if this is common or something to be concerned about. As far as the clogged catalytic converter, I am not sure how to check this apart from visual inspection. Thanks again for the input.

I agree. The 05's seemed to have a problem with it. Mine broke loose early on and I had it replaced. Then I removed it entirely. As it clogs the uppipe, your engine starts to work harder for less flow increasing the strain on the engine, decreasing mpgs. |

Did the OP have this resolved? Sounds like the front O2 sensor might be on its way out.
