Default How to protect a car while it's on an open trailer?

In the next few weeks I may have to trailer a brand new car on an open trailer, somewhere between 500-1000 miles.

What can I do to protect it from rock chips and such? Itll likely be a Box Truck and open trailer from one of the moving companies..

I thought about a car cover..but Im not sure if the wind flapping the cover around would be a good thing..

The cover would probably fall off. If not it'd scratch the paint from flapping around. Heavy coat of wax and blue painters tape the whole front.

Or put it IN the box truck. It'll fit in a 24'. Just need a loading dock or a flatbed tow truck at each end to get it in there, plus figure out a way to tie it down inside.

^^This definitely, at least the front bumper and half of the hood or depending on how you load the car the rear. Just hope the truck hauling your car has good mudflaps if it's an open trailer. Good luck.

Car cover. Use heavy duty tape or some rope around the wheels.

It won't scratch the paint.

Go down to your local carpet warehouse and ask for a few rolls of carpet mask. It should be about $0.20 a square foot. Wrap the car.

It's the same stuff as this:

Ever driven 1000mi at 65mph on New Zealand?

No matter how tightly you wrap the car cover, it's going to shift around in 65mph wind, work its way loose and scuff the paint.

I bought a roll of RoadWrap a while back for going to car shows with my old car. The stuff worked great. Really thick and kept dings off my car. Drove from Des Moines to Atlanta and back. It held up great and pulled off when I got to my destinations.

The worst I did was 80kph for about 15km holding onto a matress on the roof cos I didn't trust my knots! True, we don't have enough straight road to do that consistently.

I reckon if the rope it tight enough around the wheel spokes it should be okay. If the cover is big enough, you can also tape it to the underside edge of the car.

Don't put anything on it. That anything will cause dammage. Painter's tape would be fine, unless you hit water on the way.

You may want to go onto the COM website into the classifieds and ask to rent someone's enclosed trailer. I sold my Cargopro, but there are other guys with similar trailers just sitting till race season. My 18' was 2100 pounds empty, which is a good 1000 pounds lighter than an open UHaul steel trailer.

You can also try to get an aluminum open trailer from UHaul. They have them, but good luck actually picking one up.

^^ Illinois, Missouri, OK, Ark., Texas, Wisconsin all have always had only aluminum. I haven't seen a steel Uhaul trailer in service in years. But there maybe some still out there.

I used Blue painters tape on the entire exposed face & then wrapped the 1/2 closest to the tow vehicle.

As for how the car faces, depends on how the weight distributes on the trailer & to vehicle & also incline angle best to protect the car's front valance. I have towed some cars facing with traffic & others backwards.
