Default To buy or not to buy 08 STI?

Alright, so I'm currently going back and forth unable to decide if I should buy an 08 STI or not.
Ever since I got my WRX, I've wanted... MOAR POWAR.... But while staying mostly stock... I REALLY like the 08s a lot better than the 07, so it's not an issue of not LIKING the 08 STI. But I'm not sure if I love it to the tune of $37,500...
Of course I would take the hit since I just got my 07 WRX TR in april, but I only owe 8k on it right now and my payments are $511/mo (it'll be paid off april 09....)
Currently I have few real expenses other than rent ($575) and utilities ($200 ish) and my car payment, everything else can be scaled back as necessary...
Pro:
  • I get the car of my (current) desires
  • I don't have to roll around in world rally blue anymore and goddamn the Red STI with goldies is gonna look SICK.
  • Insurance only goes up $22 a month. I already pay $266 a mo and I am 22, so I asked them and they said since I already have the WRX the STI is only a bit more
Con:
  • Payment is steeeeeeeeep even with my equity ($1250 for 24 months, or $800 for 36, about 650 if i recall correctly for 48) but I don't want to have a car loan for very long.
  • Will delay my being able to purchase a house/condo which would help me out in terms of paying less taxes.. right now i get taxed pretty heavy on all my income, if i had $15k a year in deductible interest that would help me out a lot.
  • My pay is all commission, and things are likely to slow down jan, feb, march, april... So my income might drop a lot and there is never any guarantee. Also, I don't think I'm going to go back to school, but if I do I'm locked into a high payment car loan, and while I could finance out for a longer term like 60 mo, then I only get the 4.9% rate instead of 2.9% if I just bite the bullet and do 24 mo.
  • I should do the "Smart thing" and save for retirement, invest my extra earnings instead, etc.
So yeah.. Do the pros outweigh the cons???? This is a really hard decision.

I say wait a year and see what happens with the 09's if you are on the fence. You've got a nearly brand new car you can enjoy in the mean time and you'll have that much more equity in a year.

Thumbs down

i voted to buy it...but then i read the story over again and i think it would be smarter to stay with the wrx..if you want more power, just go stg 2..big power gain while still pretty much stock. That way you'll have enough for the 2050 STi down the road

I say keep it. Seems like the cons outweigh the pros. Like they said, hold off for a bit and see what happens. Go Stg 2 if you want teh p0wAr now.

I voted for the STi just to see if you'd really screw yourself by listening to an online poll.

Haha. Thanks.
I have way more cons than pros, but yet somehow I just keep coming back to this idea of the 08 STI.

edit: it's not *just* the power.. the other things I like about the 08 are the hatchiness, the 6 speed, the auto climate, the dash/interior and the quiet. I really don't like all the wind/road noise in the 07. I like how in the 08 you *just* hear the engine/turbo. I really like the car I just don't know if it outweighs all the cons.

Sell the WRX, use that money to buy a 99-01 2.5RS then take all the money your saving (Rent/insurance/car payment) and BUY A HOUSE. 2 years from now you'll have enough equity to buy whatever car you want and your own garage to park it!

I could buy now, the problem is there are no affordable ones to buy... Right now I just rent, it's a huge awesome house and my part is only $575 and I have a garage I park my car in every night. If I buy a house I probably have to buy a condo which feels like a big downgrade. The only thing that makes me want to buy a house really is the tax break, which would be like $5000 a year... But then again won't property tax/maintenance pretty much hit the $5000 a year savings, plus my payment would go up...?
I hate all this crap.. I swear.. So confusing.

i say you do what you want to do. from what you have been saying on your replies it doesnt really matter about the pros and cons. your gonna end up impulse buying the STI anyway.

either way have fun with your old rex or new sti

i'm sure you will get sick of all the red sti with gold wheels too. why not paint your car a custom red color, that way it would be different then all the other wrx's.

oh and i think right now its a buyers market instead of a seller market. so now would be the time to buy a house. i would expect the market to come back around in a few years. then you will have to pay those inflated prices again. good luck on what you decide to do.

No.

Dont do it.

House/condo >>>>>>>> buying the new hot car. I wish more people would see this. I went from renting to buying this year and couldnt be happier. Not only do I have something Im actually investing in outside of my 401K but I dont have to think my money is going nowhere.

Be smart. You obviously dont trust your income and having a 1k car payment isnt going to help that. Do you really wanna be spending more on a car than you would buying a 200k house?

If you love living in a big house...you are going to hate living in a Condo/Townhouse. Try and find a single family non-condo house if you can. Nothing like moving into a place and then hating it. Shared walls SUX.

Pay your current car off and dump 2k into it to make like you want it. Go and buy a house over the next year or two. The market does not appear to be moving from stagnant anytime soon. You should still have time to get good buys for at least the next year in the NW.

You're missing an option. Wait till '09.

This '08 is a complete reboot of STi's for all practical purposes. Remember how much better the '05 was over the '04? Mmmmhmmmm...

Keep the WRX. Stage 2 is moar Powar, than the stock 08 STi anyways, and a hell of a lot cheaper. Then save the rest of the cash for that house or rainy day, or stage 4.

A little advice from someone in a similar situation......

What is your 100% commission job?

My boyfriend was a mortgage broker (making 100% commission) and made awesome money from June-July...and in early August I'm sure you all know the market crashed and burned and he lost everything. Both of his boss's houses are going into foreclosure right now...even though they used to make anywhere between $20-40k per month.

Anyway, I don't know what 100% commission job you work, but I'm sure you know that there are stagnant times. If it were me, I would hold on to that WRX, buy a condo (a house gains more equity though..so you might consider that instead) but do it soon!

As mentioned above, the market is a buyers market right now. House values have gone down and so have interest rates, and many people are being forced to sell their houses for cheap. After a few years, you'll start to gain back equity in your house once the economy starts to get out of this recession. The nice thing about having equity in a house is that if you do find yourself making a bad month...or few months...at your job, you can always refinance your home and pull out cash to do whatever you need to do with it...or even if you don't have a bad month, you could pull out the equity and get yourself the new STi. Just always remember, good things come to those who wait.. unfortunately I am extremely impulsive myself...and can't wait..

Wow this was long. Hope it helps.

To be brutally honest, if I were you, I'd even look at getting rid of the WRX. $226 a month on insurance is just too much money to be throwing away.

I am assuming that you work at Eastside Subaru?

Are you guys willing to sell the 08 STi's at invoice yet?

(if both above are true we should talk)
