Ok, I have a question about this. Ive been considering doing this for a while now with a staggered wheel set up.

If we are still running a 5 speed Subaru transmission does this lower the stress on it? I don't want a 6 speed I like the gearing in my 4.44 5MT I want to do this and pick up a 4.44 R180. The wheels I want are also dual drilled so I can run my 5x100 hubs on the front and do 5x114 in the rear for the fatter axles.

FYI, I'll have 350whp when my motor build is complete

Anybody know if this will boost the power handling of the 5MT because it will be less stressed?

You think that coilovers that are subaru specific are setup for awd? Hell no.

Most people think you just slap them on and ready to go, but to get real gains you need to tune/adjust the settings on the coilovers.

Good coilovers are adjustable and can be made to work with whatever type of driving you are into.

Pfft. Its like middle school up in here.

^ yes, & sway bars can be played with to get the right feel. Anyways, I'm not worried about that, I want to know if the 5MT will be less stressed from going to RWD. I want to keep my 4.44 5MT & swap in a 4.44 R180 with a nice LSD.

Yes. It will be tons more reliable since it will have alot less moving parts and break traction easier then taking all the load and stress on the hears

Awesome here is a good thread for guys to read

http://www.rs25.com/forums/f9/t20699...up-thread.html

and an email I got from PPG:

"When putting the spool in, it will reduce some of the load on the gearbox, but will add a bit of extra stress to the rear diff and axles.

I could supply you a Torsen style LSD made by PPG or I would recommend a Kaaz LSD. They work a bit better than a Torsen style one. Our Canadian distributor Magnus Motorsport usually stock these and at least could access them.

Personally, if your budget allows I would go for larger axles. The oem ones are not the best to begin with.

I would also advise in asking Magnus Motorsport for a price on the spool as they would probably be able to do a better price than me as they are a distributor."

Sounds sweet, so I think after I tune my car up this summer, I'm going to tackle this project next winter & do it right (removing the front diff & sealing it up). Probably get an R180 & drop a Kaaz LSD in it aswell as a Perrin cover with the heat sinks, PPG spool, the wheels I want which are dual drilled (5x100&114 so I only have to change the rear hubs), bigger axles, carbon driveshaft & some good tires. Should be sick... Suspension tuning to follow

So, what is the weak part of the axles? Is it simply the bars??, where do they snap?
I'm wondering if just doing these would be good enough for 350rwhp?

http://www.driveshaftshop.com/import...le-bar-upgrade

From the site:
"Subaru 2004 WRX STi Rear Axle Bar Upgrade. The STi is a very stout car from the factory, the inner and outer CV's are made from a Japanese spec material very close to our 4130 chromoly, but the center bars are made from a brittle lower grade material. What we have made is a custom set of aerospace grade center bars that will fit your stock inner and outer CV. This kit comes with both axle bars, boots, clamps and grease.

Please Note: This axle bar upgrade is for the 2004 STi ONLY. If you have a 2005-2007 STi, see part# SBR2
"

I'm wondering, if I get an R180 4.44 rear diff that come off an older JDM RA, I'll need the 04 STi axles to use with this kit because they are for 5x100 hubs?

That kit is much cheaper than something like this:

Alright so ive read through the whole thread and i know this may have been answered already or not but for the r160 what is the power level they start falling apart? i want to do this but as everyone else i dont want to spend that much on broken parts so far all i have is 16g 16lbs and sometimes 18lbs if i feel like it, big tmic, dp and up and a conservative tune by me...no power numbers but i wouldnt say im past 250whp so is the r160 sufficient for that power level? or should i just stick to AWD and keep drifting in my dreams? I have really no interest in becoming the next drift king or impressing anyone i just really want to make the car a little bit more fun...AWD is kinda boring when its not snowing

You can get an svx r200 and you should be good for much more power, although you might need a different driveshaft and possibly axels from the svx. I don't remember specifics but it has been done.

Hey thanks for the reply!! So im guessing you already have an STI...So r180 is better but i have to get the axles and hubs and everything for it which is gonna be expensive though and im guessing im gonna have to use the rear brembos too...oh well i guess i'll just stick to awd and drift in forza...real life sucks sometimes hahaha but to everyone else who is doing RWD conversion you guys rock!!!!! BIg ups to those who have the knowledge and skills!! I just might do it some day with the r160 and kill that sucker just for a quick smile on my face...

Im just Happy this thread is still going. Im still working on getting my motor together. After that, its time to save for a 6 speed, 5x114 hubs, r180, axles and brembos. So yeah, just a few things.

Nice one. Although RWD looks fun, it wouldn't be of much use in my climate.

I recently got my PPG rwd adapter (after having been boned by a fellow nasioc member on a welded diff), and I'm looking forward to giving this thing a whirl at STPR.

Damn this thread blew up. Didn't read everything just through the last couple pages but wanted to post some responses based on my experience. Been drifting my Rwd 04 WRX since late 2010. So first, the svx does not have a r200, it has a r180. The weak area of subaru's isn't the differential. It's the axles. The r160 will hold up to say 350hp Rwd. The r160 axles normally won't hold near that much Rwd. The R180 can actually hold a lot of horsepower. I had no problems on the diff at 550tq. Friend also runs it and makes over 600 Rwhp. Most difficult thing is welding the r180 correctly. It's different than how you'd weld an open differential. Below is a picture of the r180 welded correctly. You weld the bottom spider gears to the cups that slide into the housing. It took me three diffs blowing up to figure that out lol. Axles are different issue. Stock r180 axles are hit and miss. Normally people bust them between 300-400 Rwhp. Seen them break all different ways. On the axle shaft, stubs. Most common is the cv grenading. Aftermarket axles like DSS are better, but still can have issues. I had several issues with the axles between 400-600tq. Again, broke them all types of ways. Everytime though DSS was awesome about warrantying them and all that. Awesome customer service. Eventually I got sick of breaking axles though as i traveled out of state for two big drift events and had axle breaks pretty much stop my driving. Once right before qualifying and second on the first heat of a two day event. Not fun. Only real way to stop issues from happening is to convert to a r200 rear diff. Different people have used different r200 variants ranging from old 300zx long nose r200s, s13, s14 and even 350z diffs (have to lose stock fuel tank for last one). I chose to go q45 as it is same size as s14, has a low final drive of 3.54, and you can use 6 bolt star flange nissan axles, like 350z, which are known for being really strong. You then machine s14 five bolt hubs to match sti hubs and press these into sti rear knuckles. You use whatever axles for your diff and have spacers made to push out your axles from the diff stub shafts for your wheelbase. Sti vs s14 (unmachined) Unmachined s14 Machined s14 350z cradle - tyconway's S13 cradle and axle spacers - Logan Noel's Alright hope this helps! Go get sideways!

Slowly but surely...trying to knuckle down and get it done!

Wasn't going to mention my opinion on how suitable the boxer engine configuration is for drifting, but since you mentioned it lol...

when you machined your hubs did you just chuck it up onto the hub centric part? or did you make a splined chuck ? i was about to machine a set, but the guy that is helping me thinks that i need to make a splined chuck in order to make it centered with no runout thanks for all the help
