Question troubleshoot AC on my 1993 Impreza??

There's only 44k on my 1993 Subaru Impreza. Thus, I was surprised to hear rattling when I turned on my AC.

The rattling was like a metalic sheet rattling to the hmm of the AC. It lasted for 2 days, during which I used the AC several times. Now the rattling has stopped. But my AC has stopped with it. Cooled air no longer comes out.

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot the problem? My Dealership was going to charge me $170 to take a look at it... that does not include fixing the problem!!

Is the A/C not blowing at all or is it blowing hot air? If it is not blowing at all it is probably the fan relay. It's behind the glove box (You have to remove the glove box and an access panel to see it). The part is about $50 from the dealer and takes about 15 minutes to put in.

These seem to go out on Impreza's about every 5-6 years. I know because I just replaced the one on my wife's '95 L!

Usually the A/C will still work but only on "High" if it is the relay. Also when you remove the relay (It's a big, metal cased relay) it will smell burnt if it is bad.

Hope this helps!

Howdy..

Are you sure you have pressure/fluid in the system ?

The aircon system has a pressure sensor in it... if it detects no pressure then it wont run...

Maybe you have run dry ? lol

I know a a few guys who have have stones puncture the air con rad...

Any sort of garage/air con company should be able to check the system/pressures. It doesnt take long to drop the guages on it.

J.

ps - Is the pump engaging ? Aircon light coming on ?

My AC is blowing hot/warm air right now. The AC and "Max AC" settings don't cool the air, unfortunately.

My '93 doesn't have an check-AC light, so I'm not sure if the pressure appropriate. The fan is engaging, because I feel the air coming out... the air is simply not cold.

I'll bring my car into a garage to have the AC pressure system checked.

Anything else I can check?

thanks!

Cool

Where did you hear the noise? Under the hood or in the dash? Do you feel a loss of power when you turn on the AC? I doubt it is a loss of refrigerant, sounds more like a mechanical failure. Let me know, I am a AC guy.

Poor guy the same terrible sounds started coming from my car when I first got it at first I hoped it was just low on refrigerant but sure enough the compressor was dead had to have the whole system replaced cost a pretty penny but I have to have ac here in TX hot as hell. Good luck hope it isn't what I had but it sounds very similar.

Akiata,

I heard the noise under the hood, definitely not in the dash.

Since the AC stopped working, there's no longer a rattle. There's also no loss of power when I turn on the AC switch now.

hmm...

Ya sounds like the compressor is'nt working. Before you take it to some place check the power plug to it just to make sure it is tight and check the belt while you are there too. Other than that there isn't anything you can do.

Hey, what did you find out about your A/C? You can ask these guys, they know more about auto A/C's than I do. www.aircondition.com/wwwboard

Sorry about the delay.

I found a Chilton's book about compressors, and looked at the diagram about where the fuse and wiring is supposed to go. Uh... unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to look under the hood to figure out where the diagram's parts are, in relation to the things I actually know.

Hopefully, today after work, I'll have a chance to take a look.

thanks for the advice. I'll look on the aircondition.com bulletin board too.
