Pre motor swap mods?
my girl friend is planning on swapping the motor in her 2.5rs in about a year. so to keep the cost down, we are trying to do things to the car now that will aid the motor swap. we would also like the RS to sound better right now, and maybe pick up a few hp. we are thinking about having a local shop weld up a cat back exhaust (whats a fair price?). the problem is we dont want to change the exhaust again later on. so what size piping would you guys recomend. im leaning twords 3in, yes i know 2.5 rs' dont really like piping bigger than 2.5in, but that might be on the small side if she puts in a jdm motor at a later date.
were planning on buying the muffler and resonator ( should even we put a resonator on?) online, and taking them into a shop to be welded in. any recomendations on mufflers or places to get them... and if you think we should put in a resonator. were looking for better/ deeper "boxer" sound, but we dont want rasp. also any other mods that we could do now that a turbo motor could use? thanks for reading the long post.

So you're planning on swaping the JDM WRX motor in?
If so, then yes. A 3" cat-back. A fuel pump, and stand-alone engine mangement. That's all you can really prepare for. And save your money for a bigger turbo |

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I was under the impression that the WRX downpipe does not end up in the same place as an RS cat-back, and as such you would not be able to use any catback on the car after the swap. You will be able to use the axle-back muffler, but you will need to adjust the length of the mid-pipe to mate to the DP...

The axle back fits with no issues at all, it's everything else you'll have to swap out. So, not cat-back for you my friend. If youwant a better sound right now, you can ONLY swap out the muffler...seeing as how you don't want to do it over again later. |

Does anyone have pics of the under body of a 2.5RS vs wrx/sti. Does it run on different sides of the car? im wondering if this is going to be custum why cant i make a cat back work for when we get the motor swap. if its only a flange that has to be redone, its no big deal.

RS
WRX...or STI...dunno But then again, neither of these two cars have a stock exhaust (the WRX has a stock Turbo back, but aftermarket cat-back) so I don't know how much this helps. Last edited by obyone; 03-26-2004 at 09:20 PM. |

Just trade it in on a 02 WRX, you're going to lose money doing a swap.. If it were a RX-7 and you were going to put in a 20B, then I would say go ahead, but its not feasible to put in a WRX engine in a nearly new RS..

If you don't want to waste as little money as possible, just swap out the muffler. Once you have the turbo engine, you will have to swap out the rest of the exhaust anyhow. BTW...that's an MRT header, high flow cat, and unresonated mid-pipe. it's doesn't look like that anymore becuase it's dirty now and I installed a resonator in my mid-pipe. I have a vid but it makes it sound worse than it really is because I'm following 4 sweet sweet sounding modded WRX's. I'll post it later. |

Suspension, guages and electronics would be all I would do if I knew I was doing a swap.
All power mods you try to make for an NA car will not transfer to a turbo car or will not be optimal once turbo. 3" exhaust on a NA car is not worth it at all, it will kill low end torque and only pick 1-3 hp up at the very end of the rev range. Borla and TWE headers can be used with RS turbo kits but not swaps, and these headers aren't optimal for turbo anyway. You might think about picking up a Cobb intake, use it for a year and then sell it, you will lose some cash on the deal, but not too much because the Cobbs will always be in demand and sell for good money. |

i think were ganna do a rear sway bar, P1 springs, and kyg struts soon. as for intake we already have a ganzs flow replica i made, works great. i think its major rice having a boost gauge and not having a turbo "yet" but this might happen. |
