I have 35% on the front, and 5% on the back, but I also have a Legacy, so idk if this applies. Got stopped 3 days after I got it done though, apparently 70% is as dark as you can have in IA.

Realize many factors effect how your tint looks during the day.
If it's sunny out, my 35% looks non existant. If it's darker and/or if it rains, it looks about twice as dark. Either way, in dark and rainy weather, it will all look dark. |

Here's mine, 10% all the way around. It's some new kind of tint that when you look through it it's definitely lighter. But from the outside looks almost black!

If you can't see through a 30% windshield then you are too blind to even drive a car.

Here's mine, mirror tint!
Going to do the front windows at the end of the year. Along with double stack the tinting, if possible, at top of the front windshield. It will stay the size it is right now, same size, just want it darker. Mainly since I sit so low, I don't really look through that part of the windshield anymore. I'm debating on getting like a 50-60% windshield tint, but heard that's illegal?
I want to save the stress for heat and prevent fading my interior. Also, how much more did you all have to pay to go past the legal limit? |

Windshield tint is illegal almost everywhere as far as I know, however I have seen it done well and it is really hard to tell that it is there. It's a good look for some cars, but not my style.
As far as paying extra to go below legal....? why would you? Unless the shop is trying to rip you off I don't see why they would charge more. |

or specifically: http://www.tintlaws.com/laws/WA/ Been looking for myself what's legal and what's not as I'm looking into tinting to keep my black interior black and cool during the sunny days. Also wondering if it would end up being a disadvantage to go beyond legal if I were to sell or if the state were to change it's laws. |

Front windshield tint is illegal in all states. You should not have to pay extra at a shop, they will just have to have at least a verbal acknowledgement that it is illegal. It will sound more expensive though, but that's just because it is such a large piece of tint. I posted pics of mine a little above btw.

How do you get away with illegal tinting?
Thanks for all the pictures. This has been a helpful thread.
I see many of the recommendations on going with tint that is darker than the legal limit. In NC, checking the tint is part of the yearly inspection, when they check the emissions as well. I found out the hardway, when I purchased a van from Florida--our van failed the NC state state inspection as the front windows were too dark. We had to strip the tint from the front windows and have the vehicle reinspected. Mind you, I felt it was too dark for driving at night or if it was raining very heavily. Do most states not check the tint during yearly inspections? Or, do I need to even ask how you are able to get away with the darker tints (wink, wink, nudge, nudge, ...). In NC, passenger vehicles (including wagons that are classified as passenger vehicles) are limited to 35% all around (0 tint allowed on frt windshield)--SUV's, vans, etc. have the 35% limit on front windows, but there are no restrictions on all 'back' windows. This is one time when I wish my WRX wagon was classified as an SUV as I would like to have the rear windows at 15%-20%. Mind you, with the advent of the ceramic tints, it makes the excuse that you are attempting to reduce heat a non-issue, albeit, you pay for it. For all 7 windows in my wagon: - basic tint is $250 (limited warrantee (1-3 yrs??) - life-time warrantee tint is $300 - ceramic tint (life-time warrantee) is $350 I haven't asked about the strip across the window shield or having my sunroof tinted... Mind you, this person has a strong reputation in our area (e.g., he does the tinting for the local Infiniti dealership). |
